DURET, C.
1605. pour avoir vie vegetative, sensitive & animale: Avec leurs Portraicts au naturel, selon les histoires, descriptions, voyages, & navigations des anciens & modernes Hebrieux, Chaldees, Egyptiens, Assyriens, Armeniens, Grecs, Latins, Africains, Arabes, Nubiens, Ethyopiens, Sarrasins, Turcs, Mores, Persans, Tartares, Chinois, Indiens, Portugays, Espagnols, François, Flaments, Anglois, Polonois, Moschovites, Allemans, & Autres. Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1605. 8vo (155 x 110mm). pp. (xxiv), 341, (1 blank), (2, 'Extraict du Privilege du Roi' and verso blank), with printer's device on title and 28 full-page woodcuts in the text. Contemporary calf, spine in 6 compartments, with gilt ornaments and lettering. First edition of this charming compilation of accounts of remarkable plants, illustrated with equally remarkable woodcuts. It is an anachronistic, almost mediaeval, work, devoted to the marvels of the vegetable kingdom, and includes such perennials as the vegetable lamb of Tartary and the barnacle goose tree. Duret is especially interested in such 'Zoophytes', i.e. plants that have animal properties, and which transgress the Scholastic distinction between the animal and vegetal. One such plant is a tree whose leaves fall off and walk away (illustrated by a remarkable woodcut 'Portraict de l'Arbre de l'Isle de Cimbubon, qui porte des feuilles qui vivent & cheminent').'Although the distinction between plant and animal life has been recognized by Aristotle and other writers in antiquity, people found it possible to believe in strange transformations of plants into living beasts - m … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hofmann, Kaspar
Basileae: Typis Iani Excertier, 1605, Kl.4, (12 pp.), Pappband. Sehr seltene Dissertation von Caspar Hofmann! Theses de lumbricis / quas ... Ad 8. Novemb. Pro Privilegiis in Medicina Doctoralibus disputabit Caspar Hofman, Gothanus Thuringus. [Click Below for Full Description]

[BRUSSELS]. [JOCQUET, Joannes, and others].
Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 70-71; Wellcome IV, p. 357. First edition of the first official pharmacopoeia of Brussels, containing numerous medicinal recipes and offering much insight into the 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636, based in part on Valerius, but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model. With early owner's inscription on title-page and early manuscript annotations in the margins of pp. 169, 175 and 213. Trimmed when rebound in the 19th-century, shaving the top of the title-page and the manuscript annotations, smudges and small waterstains throughout, and some minor damage to the lower inner corner of the first few leaves including the frontispiece. A fair copy. Spine partly restored, hinges cracked and some wear along the extremities.

Karsten, Arne

0 g. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A word about pagination: in all reported copies pp. 5-8 have been removed and there is an error in the pagination toward the end; p. 56 is numbered 49 and 57 and 58 were not used, the page opposite "49" being "59." PROVERBS - NUCERIN [Jean GILLES de Noyers]
Paris: Pierre Ménier II, 1605. 16mo (108 x 75 mm). [64] ff. Type ornament title border, printer's woodcut device, woodcut initial and headpiece. Discreet marginal paper repairs to first half dozen leaves, causing loss to portions of title border, supplied in neat facsimile, a few other small marginal repairs. 19th-century green morocco, central gold-stamped arms of the Marquis de Morante, spine and turn-ins gold-tooled, g.e., by Trautz-Bauzonnet (joints & corners rubbed). *** A small-format collection of French proverbs with Latin translations, arranged alphabetically, providing a convenient short cut to wisdom and wit, this version professedly adapted for juvenile readers, and cheaply printed for quick sales and little pockets. The over 1100 French proverbs were compiled in the early sixteenth century, probably by the translator Jean Gilles, of Noyers (Nuits, in Burgundy, "Aegidius Nuceriensis"), a cleric of the University of Paris. His principal source was the collection of French Proverbes communs, compiled in the late 15th century by Jean de la Vesprie, Abbot of Clairvaux; of which the first complete text was published by Josse Bade in 1519. This edition also incorporates parts of another contemporary collection, assembled by Gilles' colleague Nicolas Du Puy (known as Bonaspes), who may have contributed some of the Latin translations. The 6-page supplemental section at the end, containing 14 sayings or expressions in French and Latin with explanatory paragraph … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dugdale, Sir William
3 volumes, folio, contemporary leather, modern rebacking in leather, new endsheets, illustrated with engraved pre title, some text illustrations and 108 plates many folding, [40], 1151; 3, [14], 2, 1057; [6], 378, 218, [379-392 first index in volume 3] pp. Leather scuffed in places, one plate missing top half, a second possibly missing bottom portion of plate, but image appears complete, another plate upside down, some soiling, foxing and normal aging, a few pages with tears, but not affecting text; overall nice set of a very rare first edition. William Dugdale (1605-1681) was born at the Shustoke rectory to an old Lancashire family, and was educated at the King Henry VIII School in Coventry. As a young man, he showed an inclination for antiquarian studies, and through a relationship with Sir Christopher Hatton was commissioned to make exact drafts of all the churches in England in 1641. After a visit to France in 1648 he continued his antiquarian studies in London, and collaborated with Richard Dodsworth on his Monasticon Anglicanum, which was published in 1655, 1661, and 1673. It has been reported that Dugdale himself sold copies to booksellers who passed them along to a small, but appreciative audience. The work provided a history of the various orders in England, and an account of the individual monasteries. While other major editions of this work were published in 1693, 1718 and 1846, because each volume was published separately, it is very difficult to find a complete set of the first edition. It is difficult to determine the right number of plates for this edition, b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pignoria Lorenzo
Andreas Fries.

- Kl.
