"The engraver Jan van Doetecum has copied this world map from the double-hemispherical one engraved by his father Baptista for Petrus Plancius in 1590. There are one or two changes - such as the addtion of Novaya Zemlya and the insertion of the celestial hemispheres from Plancius' world map of 1594 - but otherwise the map is basically the same. Like its predecessor, it is enclosed within a striking strapwork border. There are four new corner inserts in oval frames. These are of the islands of St. Helena, Iceland, Japan and Ceylon. The latter three are enlarged and improved versions of these islands as they appear on the main map."" (Shirley). A fine example of this higly decorative early world map." R. W. DURET (Claude)
Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1605. [Click Below for Full Description]

(16),619;638,(36) pp. A bit of browning to the first few leaves. A few scattered brownspots. Printed in double columns. This is the first edition containing all 30 books. The first 20 books were published in Spanish in 1601. Marianas's importent history of Spain deals with the country from the first settlements to the death of King Ferdinand, who united the Crowns of Castile and Aragon."Among his (Maraina's) literary labours the most important is undoubtedly his great work on the history of Spain, which is still remembered today. There was published as late as 1854, in Madrid, an improved and richly illustrated edition continued up to that year. The work first appeared as "Historiæ de rebus Hispaniæ libri XX. Toleti, typis P. Roderici, 1592". A later edition of the compiler himself, carried on still further is "De rebus Hispaniæ libri XXX", published at Mainz in 160 (the item offered). This edition bears the imprimatur of the order for the thirty books, given by Stephan Hojeda, visitor from Dec., 1598, and of the provincial from 1604. The author had in the mean time converted a Latin edition into Spanish and this appeared complete, containing the thirty books of the Latin edition, at Toledo in 1601. This went through a number of editions during the lifetime of the author and through others after his death" (The Catholic Encyclopedia). [Attributes: First Edition]

"Bürgi also improved instruments for use in practical geometry. His proportional compasses competed with those of Galileo for priority, although both were probably no more than an improvement of devices already in use." Printed by Robert Bruney . And to be sold in London . by Iohn Norton and Iohn Bill, Antwerp, 1605. [24],338,[14]pp. Small quarto. Uninspired half modern calf and marbled boards, all edges with 17th century gilding. Engraved title vignette and illustrations in text. Usual tanning, light foxing and occasional faint marginal tidemarks, a few incidents of early marginalia, blank restoration to upper fore- corner of title-leaf, corner of free endsheet clipped, but a sound copy. First edition of this fascinating assemblage of antiquarian anecdote, history and lore, ranging from Saxon history to accounts of werewolves and what has been claimed to be the first printed English account of the legend of the Piper of Hamelin (here the term 'Pied' is applied for what seems to be the first time among early accounts). Rowlands (ca. 1549 - 1640) restored his ancestral name, Verstegan, after he was forced to flee Britain after secretly printing Thomas Alfield's account of Edmund Campion's execution. He settled in Antwerp in 1587 and entered into an active career as an agent for the publication and smuggling of Catholic texts, as well as editor, translator and polemicist. The first London printing of this work, which the DNB describes as a "seminal work of Anglo-Saxon scholarship," did not appear until 1628, but several new editions followed thereafter. "This edition is deservedly reckoned the best, as well on account of containing one or more engravings afterwards omitted, as also for the superiority of the plates, those in the subsequent editions being very indifferent copies" - Lowndes. [Click Below for Full Description]
