GALLE, Theodor (1571-1633) and Cornelis I (1576-1650) after Peter Paul RUBENS (1577-1640)
: 1605-1644 : Antwerp : 8 half sheets, impressions from engraved titlepage plates on thin unwatermarked paper. Frayed in the margins.1. [Theodor Galle, artist unknown], engraved titlepage border for Seneca, Opera (folio, 1605, 1615, 1632, 1652). Image 302 x 186mm; platemark 304 x 188mm; sheet 444 x 345mm, central cut-out 130 x 96mm. Judson and van de Velde, Appendix II, 'List of books with title-pages or book illustrations after Rubens's designs' no. 5 (1615 edition). This border was first used for the Lipsius' edition of Seneca printed by the Plantin Press in 1605 with the title lettering engraved on the plate. The central panel was then cut out and the border re-used for later editions, the titles being engraved on separate plates inserted into the border. The plates in the 1605 edition were thought to be unsatisfactory and Rubens (who was still in Italy when the first edition was produced) was asked to make new designs, including a portrait of Seneca. This new portrait of the philosopher with a full head of hair and beard was so different from the Seneca in the oval at the bottom left of the plate that it was replaced with a head resembling Rubens' design. Other re-working shows that the present impression is from a state later than that used for the 1632 edition. (Judson and van de Velde pp. 154 and 456; the titlepages in the 1605 and 1615 editions are illustrated in Judson and van de Velde's plates 102 and 103.)2. [Cornelis Galle? after Rubens], engraved titlepage for Torniello, Augustino, Annales sacri (folio, 1620). Image 327 x 214mm; platemark 330 x 217mm; sheet 445 … [Click Below for Full Description]

In: Minerva Medica, vol. 63, Nov. 1972; Walter Pagel: William Harvey's Biological Ideas..., Karger Publ., 1967. VERY RARE SECOND EDITION, with the first description of the blood circulation. This is the last and most complete work of Cesalpino, first published in 1602 under the title Ars Medica and reprinted several times under different titles. All editions are quite rare. The treaty covers a wide range of diseases that affect the heart, lungs, head, gynecological disorders, with observations on syphilis and with extensive information about drugs. The author's main interest, however, lies in the admirably clear and conclusive enunciation of his findings on blood circulation - many years before Harvey. "In the Ars Medica Cesalpino has formulated the most comprehensive, clear and conclusive statement on the small and, connected with it, great movement." (Fontana). BRUSSELS - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [JOCQUET, Joannes, and others].
1605. Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 70-71; Wellcome IV, p. 357. First edition of the first official pharmacopoeia of Brussels, containing numerous medicinal recipes and offering much insight into the 17th-century medical practice in the Low Countries. Brussels had begun discussing plans to establish a Collegium Medicum ca. 1605, but failed to do so. A 1636 plague gave city magistrates the impetus to compile a pharmacopoeia, however, and they commissioned four leading city physicians to compile the present Brussels pharmacopoeia. No apothecaries were officially consulted in the compilation of the Brussels pharmacopoeia, reflecting the growing status of physicians and declining status of apothecaries. Amsterdam had produced the first official pharmacopoeia in the Low Countries in 1636, based in part on Valerius, but the Brussels physicians chose to take the 1638 Paris Codex medicamentarius Parisiensis as their principal model. With early owner's inscription on title-page and early manuscript annotations in the margins of pp. 169, 175 and 213. Trimmed when rebound in the 19th-century, shaving the top of the title-page and the manuscript annotations, smudges and small waterstains throughout, and some minor damage to the lower inner corner of the first few leaves including the frontispiece. A fair copy. Spine partly restored, hinges cracked and some wear along the extremities. [Attributes: First Edition]

French Renaissance Bookbinding
Highly interesting book artifact, which offers remarkable opportunites for examining late French Renaissance bookbinding structure. The present example is brown calf over wooden boards, the leather covers elaborately tooled in blind, remains of original brass clasp, original pastedowns, original parchment spine linings, near-contemporary inscriptions inside both covers. The first inscription appears to have been made by one "Paulus Castellus." This name has subsequently been modified to read "Jacobus Castellus." This individual's name also appears as "Jacques Catella, pretre." The latest inscription names Jacob[us] Castellus pretre and one "Francisci Castelli." The inscriptions are in Latin and French and are dated 1605, 1610 ("mil six cents dix") and 1619. There is also a drawing of the duck which is very charming. -- Of great instructional value for students of the history of the book.

Belgica S 144 Bierens de Haan 4590-91 Cantor II, 572 f. - Tls. gebräunt bzw. etwas braunfleckig, insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

[JOCQUET, Joannes, and others].
