Cyprian EICHOVIUS
[Click Below for Full Description]

Raphael SADELER I (Anversa 1560 circa - Venezia 1628 circa)
[Click Below for Full Description]

RICHEOME, Louis (1544-1625)
Rouen: Jean Osmont, 1604. 12mo (144 x 79 mm). [22], 626, [8] pp. Title printed in red and black and with woodcut printer's device. Woodcut and type-ornament head- and tailpieces, ornamental initials. An attractive copy (title a bit dust-soiled). Contemporary parchment over flexible boards, manuscript spine title, traces of two fore-edge ties. Provenance: with Blackwell's, 1977, catalogue 1095/842, entry cut out and pasted inside front cover. *** An important exposition of Jesuit emblematics, contained within a detailed defense of the Jesuits by one of their most talented polemicists. Protestant factions had held the Jesuits responsible for the attempted assassination of Henri IV in December 1594, by a young man named Jean Châtel, who had been educated in the Jesuit Collège of Clermont. The Jesuits' opponents essentially held that Châtel had been brainwashed in Jesuit "chambres de méditations," or cells supposedly filled with lurid images of hell, which caused weak minds to fall prey to delusion. So convincing were these accusations that the Jesuits were expelled from France, until their reinstatement by the royal Edict of Rouen in 1603. First published in Bordeaux in 1597, Richeome's work, which is dedicated to the King, is couched as a Catholic refutation to Reformists, and to one particular pamphlet, cited on p. 1 (the anonymous Copie d'une lettre envoiee a Monsieur l'evesque d'Angers, touchant les miracles de Nostre Dame des Ardilliers lez Saulmur, en novembre 1594). The text is in three parts, treating miracles, saints, and images, in response to Protestants' claims … [Click Below for Full Description]

François Du Souhait
France, 1604. ANTI-WAR. UNLESS IT'S AGAINST MUSLIMS.¶ 139, [5] p. | 12mo | A-M^8/4 | 147 x 79 mm ¶ An early edition of this pacifist pamphlet. While the present edition is commonly cited as the first, the Paris Bibliothèque du ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères reports a 1603 edition. The Bibliothèque nationale reports a 1600 edition, but this may well be a cataloging error, as the target of the work, Pierre de Lostal's Le soldat françois, appears not to have been published until 1603. We also find three other editions dated 1604, these distinguished by pagination differences. ¶ De Lostal's Le soldat françois was "a widely circulated anti-Jesuit, anti-papal pamphlet which mocked even Henri IV himself and urged war against Spain" (Gough). De Lostal and Du Souhait were joined in the French press by other hawks and doves who debated whether or not to engage in a Spanish conflict. La Barillère's L'anti-pseudo-pacifique (1604), for example, attacked Du Souhait. ¶ To call Du Souhait a pacifist, however, would be too charitable. He disapproves of war against the Spanish largely on the grounds that they, too, are a Christian, and particularly a Catholic, people. Joining forces to fight the Turks, however, would be another matter entirely (see p. 58-59). The author cites no less than supporting pontifical precedent (p. 66-67). ¶ We trace no copies of this edition in North America. --- CONDITION: Later stiff parchment. Head- and tail-piece; decorative initial. Last two leaves are blank. ¶ Some shoulder notes lightly shaved by the binder; light foxing … [Click Below for Full Description]

RICHEOME, Louis (1544-1625).
The text is in three parts, treating miracles, saints, and images, in response to Protestants' claims tha … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORCUATO SEVERINO BOECIO, Anicio Manlio/ LÓPEZ, Fray Agustín (traducción y comentarios)
Juan de Bustillo. Valladolid, 1604. As I was silently pondering these things with myself, and writing and painting in my heart the grievance that brought tears and sobs, I thought I saw a woman over my head, with a most reverent and venerable face, her eyes burning, clear and sharp in the eyes of all men . Then the woman came to me, and sitting at the foot of my bed and looking at my face swollen with tears and nailed to the ground with sadness, she formed a complaint of the disturbance of my soul with these verses: This is the beginning of Anicius Mānlĭus Torquātus Severinus Bŏēthius most famous work: "De Consolatione Philosophiae" written in prison between 523 and 524. It consists of five books in which, alternating prose a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clavius, Christophorus [Clavio, Cristoforo]
ex typographia Aloisij Zannetti (in fine Romae, ex typographia Aloisij Zannetti, 1604). Edizione originale. [Click Below for Full Description]

PAGAN, Blaise François.
First and only Dutch edition (very rare second and last issue) of a great classic of French fortification by Blaise François Pagan (1604-1665), first published in French in 1645 and here based on the greatly revised and expanded German edition by Johan Jacob Wertmüller, published in 1684. Pagan was a major influence on Vauban, but Vauban's advances in the 1670s rendered the older manual out of date. Wertmüller's 1684 Frankfurt edition brought it up to date, giving it new life for seventy years. The present edition, the last in any language, was first published by Joan Block in The Hague in 1738 and is here reissued with a cancel title-page but with the same engraved half-title, though the title-page calls it a second edition. We have located only one other copy of the 1745 issue, at Leiden University Library. With manuscript notes on the half-title and title-page. With marginal water stains at the lower outside corner and many plates and text quires somewhat browned or foxed, but otherwise in good condition. Binding rubbed, and worn at the hinges. Second copy located of the second issue of the first and only Dutch edition of a classic fortification manual that remained in use for a century.Jähns II, 129 note (no location); Jordan 2777 (citing Jähns: no location); KVK & WorldCat (1 copy); STCN (same copy)..

Raphael SADELER I (Anversa 1560 circa - Venezia 1628 circa)
[Click Below for Full Description]

PAGAN, Blaise François de.
Reissue of an interesting work on the Amazon River by Blaise François de Pagan, count of Merveilles (1604-1655), dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin. The account is often considered only a slight variation on Acuña's work, but Pagan contradicts him on several points. The author probably had some travel accounts at his disposal which were unknown to Acuña (the reports by Teixera and Du Pará for example). The map drawn by Pagan is of great importance, since it shows the French colonial ambitions in the region. Our copy was originally in the library of the philosopher John Locke (1632-1704). It is inscribed by Locke and bears a press-mark, the date of purchase, the number of pages, the price paid for it (noted on page 11, as he always did), and a list of pages which interested him.Binding chafed, spine restored. Good copy of a rare work, with a most interesting provenance and complete with the map, often lacking.Borba de Moraes, p. 128; Palau 208623; Sabin 58141; for John Locke: Harrison & Laslett, The Library of John Locke, p. 201, nr. 2167..

First edition of the Latin translation of a guide for making wine and spirits from fruits and vegetables, originally published in German a year earlier.Johann Rudolph Glauber (1604-1670) was "the best practical chemist of his day" (DSB). In 1639 Glauber left his native Germany because of the disturbances of the Thirty Years' War and moved to Amsterdam where he "outfitted what was surely the most impressive laboratory in Europe" (DSB). He is particularly interesting because he stands between the chemists who deliberately followed alchemy and those who took a modern scientific approach. GLAUBER, Johann Rudolph.
Collection of 19 works by Johann Rudolph Glauber (1604-1670), "the best practical chemist of his day" (DSB), including notable writings such as: Pharmacopoea spagyrica, Furni novi philosophici, Prosperitatis Germaniae, Miraculum mundi and Operis mineralis. Many are the first Latin editions, published more or less simultaneously with the first editions in the original German. With the bookplates of Charles Finney Cox (1846-1912), anonymous bookplates dated 1857, bookplates with unidentified 19th-century coat of arms and library stamps "KB". In his bibliography Bolton includes four volumes by Glauber with the title Opera (Amsterdam, 1650-1670), which includes the same treatises in the same order. As the present volumes were in the collection of Charles F. Cox around that the time of publication in 1892, and thus in the USA, it's likely it's the same set.Lacking the 4 woodcut plates from Furni novi philosophici, some spots and browning throughout, a few dampstains in the upper margin and the title-page of the Prosperitatis Germaniae pars prima included twice (both detached and loosely inserted). The work contains a total of 101 small woodcut emblems of high quality, all surrounded by elaborate woodcut borders in the late Renaissance style, with the arms and monogram of Juan de Bonilla, who paid for the publication. The text is divided into three parts: the first is Horozco's dissertation on emblems, while the second and third parts contain 50 emblems, each accompanied by Spanish verse of varying lengths. Our copy belongs to the third edition, following the 1589 and 1591 editions printed by Juan de la Cuesta in Segovia. For this 1603-1604 Caragoca edition, the woodcut emblems were recut, and the woodcut borders are entirely different. An important expression of the Spanish Golden Age (Siglo D'oro) was the … [Click Below for Full Description]
