Vesalius, Andreas
Giovanni Antonio & Giacomo de Franceschi, Venice, 1604. Fifth and final edition of the most important and influential book in the study of human anatomy utilizing the same woodblocks as the 1568 edition (Senensis and Creigher, Venice), the fourth published in folio format. Folio, bound in period vellum-backed wrappers, elaborate woodcut title page with Vesalius performing a dissection, with over 200 woodcut anatomical illustrations including 21 full-page, woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initials. The fifth edition was prompted by a student demand for a less costly edition than the elaborate second Opernius edition of 1555. Additions included a simpler title page handsomely engraved on copper, and an additional series of anatomical tables at the end of the text containing its own title page where is provided the date of publication which is absent from the true title page. Laid in is a period manuscript titled "Tratto de la Miologia" containing a list of the muscles of the human body and corresponding page numbers within the text (Cushing, VI. A-5). In good condition. Housed in a custom folding chemise case. Scarce and desirable. A superior example of Vesalius' masterpiece, one of the most monumental achievements in the history of both medical education and printing. Sixteenth century Flemish anatomist and physician Andreas Vesalius studied medicine at the University of Paris and received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Padua in 1537. The University of Padua was home to the most prestigious medical school in Europe at the time yet based its curriculum pri … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kepler Johannes
Claudius Marnius & heirs of Joannes Aubrius, Frankfurt, 1604. Quarto (8.3 x 6.7 inches). Modern half vellum binding. A good well margined copy. First edition of Kepler's important and highly significant book in the history of optics. The first part of 5 chapters deals with human vision and the functions of the eye, the crucial role played by the retina, the process of refraction and the first scientifically correct explanation of myopia. The second part is divided into six sections, which "include not only a discussion of parallax, astronomical refraction, and his eclipse instruments but also the annual variation in the apparent size of the sun. Since the changing size of the solar image is inversely proportional to the sun's distance, this key problem was closely related to his planetary theory, unfortunately, his observational results were not decisive. "The immediate impact of Kepler's optical work was not great; but ultimately it changed the course of optics" (DSB). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

VALERIO, Luca.
Bonfadino; Facio 1604; 1606, Rome. First editions of these two rare and fundamental works on determining centres of gravity ? these are fascinating copies with numerous contemporary annotations in an untouched contemporary binding. In these books Valerio transformed the Archimedean ?method of exhaustion? into a series of important theorems ?so that for a whole class of convex curves and solids it was no longer necessary to establish results by special methods? (Baron, p. 101). Valerio was thus able to determine for the first time the centres of gravity of a number of ?Archimedean solids,? notably the hemispheroid and hyperboloid ?which is undoubtedly one of the most difficult results in classical-Renaissance mathematics? (Napolitani & Saito, p. 108). These works were also important for initiating the transition from classical Greek geometry to modern mathematics (see below) ? for example, according to Divizia, De CentroGravitatis anticipated the concept of limit and the integral calculus. Valerio strongly influenced Galileo, through his correspondence and these two books, and he was singled out for praise in the Discorsi, where he is described as ?our greatest geometer, the New Archimedes of our age? ?Valerio introduced important changes and novelties into the mathematics of his time ? especially at the methodological level. He opened up a new road which was to be followed by several others: notably, Cavalieri, with his theory of indivisibles, and, above all, Descartes with his geometry of curves. Mathematics, as a result, was totally transformed, and its language and metho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Some browning and spotting, top margin occasionally shaved just touching the page number. Vellum somewhat darkened and label a little chipped. Amorial bookplate of the Syston Park library (cut down to fit) to front pastedown. A rare reprint of a collection of excerpts from ancient Greek letters, with following Latin translation, originally published by Morel in Paris several decades earlier and often reprinted; it was almost certainly in regular use as a schoolbook. HOOKER, Richard
London: John Windet, 1604. SECOND EDITION. Separate title page for the fifth book. Woodcut devices on titles, headpieces, and initials. Contemporary vellum, preserved in a folding cloth box. Ownership inscription of Edward Pye Chamberlayne dated 1692, 1693 and 1706, perhaps the same Chamberlayne (1661-1727) who spent time in Barbados and married Anne Kedley (1662-1733). They lived at "Nooke's Court," also known as the "new house" in the parish of Dewchurch, Herefordshire, England. There are numerous annotations in his hand on the fly-leaf, including a large manuscript "Edward and Anne." Additional annotations throughout the book. Rare second edition of first four books initially published in 1593; this copy was also issued with the first edition of the fifth book published in 1597 which was a common practice. The text was originally intended to be eight books but only five were completed in Hooker's lifetime. This book is considered Hooker's masterpiece. The text was initially conceived as a response to the publication of An admonition to Parliament issued from a secret press in 1572. Admonition called for Queen Elizabeth I to return to a "more pure" form of worship in the Church of England. Puritans soon took up Admonition as their platform. In his response, Hooker defends the Church of England against Puritanism and Roman Catholicism. The core of Hooker's thinking on the relations of church and state is unity. In his view, the Puritans adopted an impossible position: they claimed to be loyal to the queen while repudiating her church. By law and by reason, the people of … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALERIANO BOLZANI, Giovanni Pierio
1604. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A remarkable attempt to explain symbolism of the Egyptian and ancient mythology" (Gregorovius) Pierio Valeriano Bolzani was an important early 16th-century aItalian humanist most-known for his extensive studies and works on Egyptian hieroglyphics. His best work, 'Hieroglyphica,'is a study on hieroglyphics and the use of allegory throughout Egyptian culture. When Horapollo's work of hieroglyphics was rediscovered, Valeriano sought to publish a work during the craze for knowledge on hieroglyphics. While it took a while for the work to be completed, it is often considered the most concise representation of Egyptian symbols, even though it was largely influenced by Horapollo. Albrecht Altdorfer
Regensburg, 1513). Abdruck Hamburg, Froben, 1604. [Click Below for Full Description]
