BOSSCHE, Willem vanden.
, . . Krivatsy 1603; Nissen, ZBI 481; STCV (5 copies). Rare first and only edition of a well-illustrated handbook on medicinal uses of animals and animal products, by Willem vanden Bossche in Dendermonde (East Flanders). The wild and domesticated animals are arranged in four sections: birds and other winged animals (including a bat, eagle, falcon, vulture, owls, swan, goose, peacock, pheasant and parrot), mammalian quadrupeds (including a camel, horse, lion, elephant), fish and other marine animals, edible and inedible (including an eel, turtle, snails, frogs, otter and beaver), and insects, arthropods, reptiles, worms, etc.. The lice are shown with their host scratching his head and the leeches in use for bloodletting on a woman's arm. The beaver looks rather like a wolf with a fish body for a tail. The woodcut of a hedgehog is reused to illustrate the sea urchin! Bossche gives a description of each animal, quoting sources from antiquity to the seventeenth century, and then discusses its medical uses. With owners' inscriptions, owner's stamp and an occasional marginal manuscript note. The woodblock of locusts is damaged in all copies we have seen. With one quire slightly browned, a water stain running into the text in 3 quires and an occasional marginal defect, but still in good condition. The binding is wrinkled with a few small holes and with only remains of the ties, but otherwise good. A fascinating medical-zoological work.

Fabricius, (Hieronymus) ab Aquapendente
Patavia [Padua]: Lorenzo Pasquati, 1603. First Edition (with the printing permission on p. 22).. Twentieth century three quarter tan leather.. Good. The margins of those pages with plates have been unevenly folded. Small portions of blank margins have been unevenly trimmed to facilitate folding on three plates. Generally a copy with good margins. The double page plate is close along the top horizontal margin as is plate four along the lower horizontal margin. There are two marginal tears with old repairs to the double page plate; at one point plate three has an old repair (paper flaw?) touching the engraved cross hatch shading at an extreme edge of the illustration but well within the margin. Plate five has a small old ink smudge to a blank portion of the plate. There is a 4 x 2 inch "crescent" of moderate damp mildew to the paper in the blank gutter at the base with an old repair to four leaves in the blank margin.. Folio. [2], 1 - 23, [1] pp.,with 7 full-page engraved text illustrations and one double-page illustration. Fabricius was one of William Harvey's teachers and credibly the inspiration for Harvey's conceiving his idea of the circulation of the blood (see the noted comment to Robert Boyle referred to in Grolier, Medicine, p. 104). The book offered here is the first publication of the discovery and demonstration of the valves in the veins; the investigation of which had been accomplished prior to Harvey's attendance at Padua (Fabricius claims to have noticed them in 1574 and demonstrated the fact in his lectures). Though Fabricius had re-discovered these valves … [Click Below for Full Description]

Album amicorum].
Meissen, Royal School of St Afra, 1602-1603. 8vo. 32 ff., including 15 pp. of poems and 32 pp. with 39 entries and 1 p. with contemporary contemplative entries by three writers. Contemp. limp vellum, using an old manuscript. All the entries in this early 17th century friendship album, which is also notable for its unusual format and binding, date from Zumler's sojourn at the Royal School of St Afra in Meissen in Saxony, where he was educated from September 1598 to August 1604. Hence, this is also an early and unusual example of a public school friendship album, rather than than of a university student. Apart from a number of later clerics - including an early relation of Georg Agricola - most contributors are boys or teachers who later achieved some renown as scholars, such as the humanist Gallus von Racknitz. The entries are prefixed by 15 handwritten pages of Latin poems, all copied from the works of Georg Fabricius (1516-71), who had been director of the St Afra's in 1546. - Noteworthy contributors include: 1) Gallus Baron Racknitz (1590-1658), poet and humanist. - 2) Moritz III Baron Racknitz (b. ca 1590, d. before 1658), cousin of Gallus v. Racknitz. - 3) Michael Fleischer (1580-1653), clergyman in Krakau in Saxony. - 4) Paul Werner (d. 1626) of Gottlau, deacon at Seyda near Schweinitz. - 5) Johannes Helbig (ca 1590-1646), administrator at St Afra's school from 1608 to 1645. - 6) Caspar von Hermsdorf (d. 1619). - 7) Bartolomäus Sättler (dates unknown), a son of Jacob Sättler (1540-1619), clergyman at St Nikolai in Freiberg. PLAT, Sir Hugh.
London: Peter Short dwelling at the signe of the Starre on Bredstreet-hill, 1603. First edition, the superb Macclesfield copy bound in contemporary vellum gilt, of this important work by “Elizabethan London's most curious student of nature” (Harkness, p. 8), which first introduced the process of making coke from coal, a technological innovation that proved crucial in the industrial revolution. This is an extremely rare book – indeed, this is probably the only surviving perfect copy (see below). “The technique of making coke from coal [was] suggested in 1603 by Hugh Plat as a process similar to making charcoal from wood” (Osborne, p. 234). “Coke's superior crushing strength allowed blast furnaces to become taller and larger. The ensuing availability of inexpensive iron was one of the factors leading to the industrial revolution” (Newgera, p. 89). “Plat's approach to his many collaborators and the natural knowledge they shared with him was rigorous, and prefigures in significant ways … the scientific method” (Harkness, p. 214). “Plat's work should not be interpreted as a weak anticipation of [Francis] Bacon but as a very strong stimulus to Bacon's philosophy of science” (Conner, p. 300). Artist: FONTANA, Giovanni Battista.Engraved by CUSTOS, Custos.
1603 1603 - Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Size: 30 x 43 cm. (12 x 17 inches) Fine condition. Magnificent engraving from a later edition of the first illustrated museum catalogue ever printed. The Roman Catholic Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol (1529-1595) was an avid collector of weaponry and armoury, which had originally belonged to all sorts of princes and potentates. In order to document his interest in history he created the pictorial programme of the so-called "Spanish Hall" and a collection of over 1000 portraits of European noblemen and women. He assigned his personal secretary Jacob Schrenck von Notzing to write a catalogue of the collection of armory (Heldenrüstkammer) housed at Schloss Ambras near Innsbruck which finally was brought to print in 1601. The magnificent catalogue (known as Armamentarium heroicum) shows very rare examples of armours from the 15th and 16th centuries which originally belonged to illustrious persons such as the Emperor Maximilian I or Prince Maurice of Orange. The objects themselves were displayed in Ambras castle in a strict hierarchic order. In 1582 the Antwerp born Augsburg engraver and publisher Dominicus Custos (1550/59-1615) started to engrave the in all 126 portraits after the drawings of Giovanni Battista Fontana (1541-1587). The book was designed so that a full-length portrait engraving of the armour's former owner faced a page containing the biography of the figure shown, which accompanies the engraving. The noble figures are all in full armour and standing in niches with elaborate surroundings of ornamental columns. [Attribute … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABRICI, Girolamo (FABRICIUS AB AQUAPENDENTE, Hieronymus).
Padua: Lorenzo Pasquati, 1603. First edition, very rare first separate issue (see below), “of the first systematic study of the structure, distribution and position of the venous valves. Although the valves of the veins had been observed previously by G.B. Canano and Amato Lusitano, Fabrici studied them anew on the basis of his own observations. Perhaps because he analyzed anatomical structures in terms of their purpose, he interpreted the function of the valves as slowing down the influx of blood in order to distribute it more evenly to the various parts of the body. Although Fabrici's analysis was in part erroneous, <i>De venarum ostiolis</i> became his most influential work, in that it inspired his student, William Harvey, to conceptualize the circulation of the blood” (Norman). “The sumptuously printed folios which Fabricius published in 1603-1604 were issued separately, and unbound. Though they escaped Choulant's notice, they are among the rarest and most beautiful works in the history of anatomical illustration. The plates are magnificent; in fact nothing on their scale had been seen since the days of Vesalius” (Franklin). The work is most often found bound as part of Fabricius' <i>Opera anatomica</i> (1625), without a separate title page. Franklin cites only the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians, the Radcliffe Library (Oxford) and the New York Academy of Medicine – all copies bound up under the 1625 general title but with the 1603 title preserved – and a copy without separate title in the library of the Royal Society … [Click Below for Full Description]
