CHAVIGNY (Jean de).
A Lyon, chez Pierre Rigaud, 1603. in-8. Titre gravé. 8ff. 639pp. 4ff. Plein veau, dos lisse orné (reliure vers 1800, coins émoussés avec petits manques, quelques défauts et traces d'épidermures). Edition Originale. Caillet, I, 2305. Brunet, I, 1828. Cantamessa, Astrologia Ins and Outs, 1528. Remigio CANTAGALLINA (Borgo San Sepolcro, 1582 circa; Florence, 1656).
Acquaforte e bulino, 1603, datata e monogrammata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Early (third or fourth) edition of Lope de Vega's extraordinarily successful pastoral novel (partly in verse), first published in 1598 and going through more than 40 editions within a century. All the early editions are rare: WorldCat records only the BL copy of this, though Profeti adds a few more, Arsenal, Wolfenbüttel, Hispanic Society, and Florence: not in the BNSpain. Verso of the title inscribed: 'John Winstanley liber [.] / ex dono Margaret ?Sotherno / 1641', John Winstanley's signature (the ascenders just cropped) on the page opposite. The inscription of A.M. Espinosa is dated 1908, noting it as a gift from T.S. Bell, which means this is Espinosa Senior, father of the noted folklorist Aurelio Macedonio Espinosa. CAMDEN, William
1603. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. ENORMOUS FOLIO + Famously in Jefferson's Library! "The best edition of Camden!" A fine, early 17th-century printing of William Camden's "Anglica, Normannica, Hibernica, Cambrica, a veteribus scripta." This second edition is considered the best edition of this work (Payne & Foss) and is simply a work of historical texts related to the history of Britain. It includes famous battles and invasions, such as the William the Conqueror's Norman invasion of Ireland. In the late 12th-century, Gerald of Wales wrote a history of Henry II conquest of Ireland. Camden created a modern approach to the histories of England, and in this Latin text, includes specimen of Old English which would be the "Preface to Gregory's Pastoral Care, taken from Parker's Asser." (Adams, Old English Scholarship). This book was famously in Thomas Jefferson's Library (Gilreath & Wilson). [Attributes: First Edition]

1603. First English edition of ''Essayes: Morall, Politike and Millitarie'' by Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne. London: Val. Sims for Edward Blount, 1603. Montaigne popularized the essay as a literary form and inspired scores of 17th century philosophers after him; this translation by Florio is also credited with coining many new English words. Tall quarto measuring 7.5'' x 11'' is bound in modern dark brown calf. Simple blind tooling to front and rear board with raised bands and blind stamped title to spine. Title page and verso are in facsimile, and book also lacks page A4. Otherwise complete and intact, including all other title pages for the second and third books in the volume. Pages A2 and A3 show browning at edges and are slightly brittle with some very minor loss. All other leaves appear bright and clean. Binding is tight and square and internally book is sound with little wear. An attractive copy of this very scarce and important work, in very good plus condition. VALIGNANI, Alessandro
Zannetti, Roma, 1603. In -8°, pp. 102, cartonato, tagli rossi. Prima edizione. First edition. Valignani was a Jesuit missionary who had a fundamental role in introduction of Christianims in Far East, where he was sent in 1573, eight years after having joint the Society of Jesus. He developed a proselytism method based on avoiding clashes and conficts with local religions and cultures, in contrast with the Franciscan and Dominican behaviours. He arrived to Japan in 1578 and left the country in 1581, preaching the need to live in accord to local buddhist hierarchy, to avoid conflict with that cultur … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABRICI, Girolamo (FABRICIUS AB AQUAPENDENTE, Hieronymus).
Padua: Lorenzo Pasquati, 1603. First edition. First edition, very rare first separate issue (see below), "of the first systematic study of the structure, distribution and position of the venous valves. Although the valves of the veins had been observed previously by G.B. Canano and Amato Lusitano, Fabrici studied them anew on the basis of his own observations. Perhaps because he analyzed anatomical structures in terms of their purpose, he interpreted the function of the valves as slowing down the influx of blood in order to distribute it more evenly to the various parts of the body. Although Fabrici's analysis was in part erroneous, De venarum ostiolis became his most influential work, in that it inspired his student, William Harvey, to conceptualize the circulation of the blood" (Norman). "The sumptuously printed folios which Fabricius published in 1603-1604 were issued separately, and unbound. Though they escaped Choulant's notice, they are among the rarest and most beautiful works in the history of anatomical illustration. The plates are magnificent; in fact nothing on their scale had been seen since the days of Vesalius" (Franklin). The work is most often found bound as part of Fabricius' Opera anatomica (1625), without a separate title page. Franklin cites only the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians, the Radcliffe Library (Oxford) and the New York Academy of Medicine - all copies bound up under the 1625 general title but with the 1603 title preserved - and a copy without separate title in the library of the Royal Society of Medicine. Rare first and only edition of a well-illustrated handbook on medicinal uses of animals and animal products, by Willem vanden Bossche in Dendermonde (East Flanders). The wild and domesticated animals are arranged in four sections: birds and other winged animals (including a bat, eagle, falcon, vulture, owls, swan, goose, peacock, pheasant and parrot), mammalian quadrupeds (including a camel, horse, lion, elephant), fish and other marine animals, edible and inedible (including an eel, turtle, snails, frogs, otter and beaver), and insects, arthropods, reptiles, worms, etc.. The lice are shown with their host scratching his head and the leeches in use for bloodletting on a woman's arm. The beaver looks rather like a wolf with a fish body for a tail. The woodcut of a hedgehog is reused to illustrate the sea urchin! Bossche gives a description of each animal, quoting sources from antiquity to the seventeenth century, and then discusses its medical uses. With owners' inscriptions, owner's stamp and an occasional marginal manuscript note. The woodblock of locusts is damaged in all copies we have seen. With one quire slightly browned, a water stain running into the text in 3 quires and an occasional marginal defect, but still in good condition. The binding is wrinkled with a few small holes and with only remains of the ties, but otherwise good. A fascinating medical-zoological work.

Nuremberg, 1603. Folio (225 x 353 mm). German manuscript on paper, splendidly illustrated. 440 leaves (including 119 blanks), complete (later pencil foliation 1-439, skipping a leaf after 188). 24 pages painted in full colour showing a continuous procession beneath panels of text, two of these pages with fold-out extensions pasted on, 64 illustrations of full-length masked and costumed figures identified by coats of arms and beneath text panels outlining the carnival of that year. Commissioned by William Kress von Kressenstein, a member of one of Nuremberg's most renowned patrician families, the present manuscript is illustrated with a total of 88 elaborate, full-page watercolours by a skilful and experienced artist, obviously trained in the Augsburg-Nuremberg area with such masters as Hans Schäufelein, Hans Sebald Beham, or Jörg Breu the Younger. Mentioning numerous members of the Kress family, the Chronicle (ff. 1-224 in our manuscript) reports notable events from the founding of the city in 1139 until 1603 and is especially remarkable for including an account of a 1592 parade of the municipal militia, not otherwise documented in such detail: 24 pages in full colour f … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

FABRIZIO, Girolamo (Hieronymous Fabricius ab Aquapendente).
Patavii [Padua]: Ex Typographia Laurentii Pasquati. Second edition, but the first in folio. The De locutione examines the organs of speech, illustrated by a "cut-away" view of the human ear and throat. It is the earliest separate work on the physiology of human speech, and deals with the physiological elements of articulation and voice production. The first edition was published in 1601 as a quarto and is extremely rare. The format was enlarged for this edition to folio probably to comply with other works being published by Fabrizio as his monumental Totius animalis fabricae theatrum, which was never completed. The present work was issued with his De formato foetu (1604), De venarum osteolis (1603) and De brutorum loquela (1603), which were also issued separately as Fabrizio makes clear in the dedication to the De venarum osteolis. All of these works are finely printed folios with beautiful engraved plates. The same sheets were reissued. without title-pages but with one additional tract, in 1625. The De venarum osteolis is of particular importance for announcing and illustrating the discovery of the venous valves. Norman catalogue 749 (this copy). Fulton, "Bibliographical note concerning the first edition of De venarum ostiolis" in De venarum ostiolis, 1603, of Hieronymus Fabricius of Aquapendente, ed. K. J. Franklin (1954).Folio, pp. (viii), 27. With 1 full-page engraving on p. 26, large woodcut device on title-page, woodcut initials and ornaments. Old dampstain in lower margin. 20th-century half calf. Bookplates of H.F. Norman MD and Richard J. Bennett.

1603. Japanese Watercolor of Iris Watercolor on paper 19th Century 21” x 17” framed In ancient times Japan had no calendar, and farmers relied on seasonal changes in nature to guide them in growing rice. At the end of winter, the appearance of the cherry blossom marked the end of the hunting season, and the beginning of the rice growing season. In late spring, the iris bloom announced the beginning of the rainy season, when the rice would be transplanted to the fields. Over time, these wild irises were transplanted into Japanese gardens, and have been cultivated in Japan for over 500 years. During the Edo period in Japan (1603-1868) there was a renaissance of iris cultivation, when many years of peace allowed the art and science of botany and horticulture to flourish. In the beginning of Edo Period, when the ruling class of shoguns and daimyos built their castles and mansions, they created many excursion-style gardens, in which people could walk around the garden. The iris or Hanashobu was, and still is, a common flower to see in Japanese gardens as it can be grown in water (ponds or marshes), it’s blooming period in May and its simple and refined beauty. This simple, elegant flower is of high importance in Japanese culture, and has attached to it much symbolic meaning. The iris flower was thought to ward off evil spirits, and is a symbol of masculine success. It’s long, narrow blades of the leaves resemble the sharp blades of the sword, and for many centuries it has been a custom to place iris leaves in a boy’s bath to give him a “martial” spirit. The iris is associated wi … [Click Below for Full Description]
