All editions before 1700 are extremely rare, most surviving in only one copy. We know six earlier editions, none in more than two copies. It contains remedies for ailments and solutions to other problems concerning drunkenness, night vision, reducing the size of a virgin's breasts, improving the relationship between man and wife, making dogs dance, etc. The present edition is printed by the unrecorded Amsterdam printer Teunis Willemszoon. The full imprint reads: "Tot Amsterdam, Ghedruckt by Teunis Willemszoon, woonende in de Bergh straet, in de drie Booneters, Int Jaer 1616". We have found no other record of a printer (or anyone in the book trades) named Teunis (or Anthony) Willemsz or any other variants of the fairly common name, whether in imprints and colophons or in the published literature on the Dutch booktrades. We have also found no one of that name recorded as a member of the book trades or associated with that street … [Click Below for Full Description]

MYNSICHT, Adrian von.
Blake, p. 318; Thorndike, pp. 84-86. Third Venice edition of a medical work by the German alchemist Adrian von Mynsicht (1603-1638). "One of the most frequently reprinted works of medical pharmacy was the Thesaurus of Adrian Mynsicht (1603-1638), an M.D. of Helmstedt who became physician to the duke of Mecklenburg and others ... It purported to reveal to the "sons of doctrine and wisdom" a most secret way of compounding drugs based on his own experience and practice" (Thorndike). He was a follower of Paracelsus, opposing the Galenic theory in believing that illnesses were caused by chemical processes instead of fluctuation of the humours. Von Mynsincht was the first to describe emetic tartar. At the end of the text is a small treatise concerning the philosopher's stone. The work is followed by three smaller works by Carolus Musitanus, Andreas Battimelli and Hieronymus Piperus, who wrote additions to Mynsicht's Thesaurus. With a faint stamp on title-page, and a frequently appearing faint library stamp on pages throughout the book. Browned and foxed throughout, with frequent water stains and some occasional spots. Overall a good copy.

SAN ROMÁN DE RIBADENEYRA, Antonio de.
Goldsmith, BMC Spanish & Portuguese S225; USTC 5018554 (mixed with 2? other eds.); cf. Palau 293612. Rare second printing (rarely distinguished from the more common first edition of 1603) of an important Spanish account of King Sebastião I of Portugal's ill-fated 1578 invasion of Moroccan and his death in battle, copying the 1603 edition's imprint, date, woodcut arms on the title-page and even the typesetting errors and list of errata. King Sebastião I of Portugal (1554-1578) inherited the crown at age three after the death of his grandfather João III. Educated by Jesuits, he combined religious fanaticism with an unbounded admiration for the military, presenting himself as a Christian knight who would fight the "misguided" Muslims in Africa and rescue them from their faith. He got his chance when the deposed Moroccan Sultan Abu Abdallah Mohammed II asked for his help. In 1578 Sebastião invaded Morocco with a large and expensive force, joined by Abu Abdallah's army of Moors and other Muslim opponents of the Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. Although Ahmad died during the invasion, Sebastião's inexperience and rash attack in the bloody and disastrous Battle of the Three Kings at Alcazarquivir in the north of Morocco led to his own death, that of 8000 Portuguese troops, including much of the Portuguese nobility, and the capture of 15,000 more. Sebastião's body was never found and many supporters refused to believe had died and awaited his return for decades. San Román indicates on the title-page that he made use of Girolami Franchi Conestaggio's 1585 history of the union of Spain and Po … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary blind-stamped calf with decorations on both covers STC 364; cf. Olschki, Choix, 2721 (to the first ed.): "Opuscule rare et remarquable à cause des curieuses et belles figures, autant attrayantes pour leurs sujets que pour l'execution". Reprint of the first edition from Ferrara 1590 with the same pretty woodcuts that show inside elaborate historiated borders the coat of arms of the Marchesa Lavinia Lante della Rovere (to whom the work is dedicated) and then 30 scenes from the life of saint Nicholas of Tolentino (c. 1246-1305). The Italian mystic is known as the Patron of Holy Souls and several legends from his life are depicted and described in this work. - Several white leaves bound in at the end, trimmed, partly cutting the border or title. Old owner s inscription to title, small wormholes to only the first few pages without loss, waterstaining to most part of the book, but only in parts a little more distict, some browning. Binding rubbed, laces gone, spine with small defects on top and bottom but solid, gilding faded, but still quite decorative. [15 Warenabbildungen bei antiquariat.de]

Montaigne, Michel de
London: Val. Sims for Edward Blount, 1603. First edition in English of the author's magnum opus and one of the most important philosophical books of Western civilization. Folio, contemporary brown leather with gilt arabesque centerpiece and monogram. Translated by John Florio. In very good condition with some browning to the page edges, two leaves of verses to Florio and errata in the preliminaries, and blank 2Q4. First editions in English are rare. Montaigne's stated goal in his book is to describe man, and especially himself, with utter frankness and honesty ("bonne foi"). He finds the great variety and volatility of human nature to be its most basic features, which resonates to the Renaissance thought about the fragility of humans. According to the scholar Paul Oskar Kristeller, "the writers of the period were keenly aware of the miseries and ills of our earthly existence". A representative quote is "I have never seen a greater monster or miracle than myself." Harold Bloom noted that Montaigne "represents-not everyman... but very nearly every man who has the desire, ability, and opportunity to think and to read" (The Western Canon, 151). "Montaigne devised the essay from in which to express his personal convictions and private meditations, a form in which he can hardly be said to have been anticipated... He finds a place in the present canon, however, chiefly for his consummate representation of the enlightened skepticism of the 16th century, to which Bacon, Decartes and Newton were to provide the answers in the next" (PMM 95).

Early editions (first editions were 1585 and 1565 respectively) - the Acontius is rare in commerce and not much more common in libraries. Acontius fled to Basel as the counter reformation began to find an increasingly wide variety if ideas heretical. EQUINE MEDICINE, TANAKA FAMILY
1603. Eight drawings in the text. Written on high-quality paper & in one fine hand throughout. 389 folding leaves of text in 12 vols. 8vo (242 x 180 mm.), attractive navy blue embossed wrappers, all with gold-flecked endpapers, new stitching. [Japan: late Edo].An important archive of manuscripts of the Tanaka family concerning equine medicine. We learn in the second volume that in 1603 two horse doctors, Kawada Michiharu and another person who lived in the Kanto region, gave the information in these volumes to Murai Jibozaemon. In 1635 Yokohama Sakon gave further information to Murai. Additionally, in 1640 Shoji Kakuzaemoni gave further secrets to Murai. This last revelation was called "Senkin shinden" or "Information Worth a Thousand Pieces of Gold."The volumes are concerned with the diet of horses and include many successful methods of feeding the animals, some of which were learned from the Obata school of veterinary medicine. The anonymous author states that different diets must be given to horses depending on their workloads and breeds. A number of diets listed include many herbs; methods of preparation are described. Many case histories are presented and there is an extensive section on acupuncture and the care of hooves (with two drawings of where to insert acupuncture needles on the bottom of the hoof). The information regarding hoof care came from four people, including Saito Izu no kami, Shiina Goro Nagatsune, and Nakamura Saburozaemon (we cannot read the name of the fourth). They were disciples of the Komagata no myojin (a shrine dedicated to horses … [Click Below for Full Description]
