Cyprian EICHOVIUS
[Click Below for Full Description]

Remigio CANTAGALLINA (Borgo San Sepolcro, 1582 circa; Florence, 1656).
Acquaforte e bulino, 1603, datata e monogrammata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Sophocles
Geneva: Paul Estienne, 1603 First edition of Paul Estienne's greatest achievement. Schreiber notes: "This is not a mere reprint of Henri's edition of 1578, but a much improved work: besides the commentaries of Camerarius, it includes the Annotationes of Henri Estienne, which were not found in the earlier edition. The Greek Sophoclean text is accompanied by the scholia of Triclinios and the Latin translation of Vitus Winsemius (Veit Oertel)" (Schreiber 273). In a contemporary French prize binding of full sheep, with a provenance inscription marking its passing from the Abbey of Sain-Remi to the Jesuit College in Reims in 1626. Covers profusely gilt with a pattern of crosses, interspersed with fleurs-de-lys and central arms, flat spine, gilt-stamped with the same cross motif, with gilt lettering, edges dotted in gilt, remains of ties, all edges gilt. Hinges cracking, but very sound, small crack front joint near top edge. Expensive notes in a contemporary and early eighteenth-century hand in the preliminaries and at end, early ownership inscription (Grosley) and another (Roger) on first title-page, the second repeated on preliminary blank. Bound in as a reinforcement before the front free endpaper is a fragment of a fourteenth-century document on vellum. Two parts in one, quarto. . With seven pages of early manuscript notes at the end. GUERREIRO, Fernao
Evora: Manoel de Lyra, 1603. 4to., 11, (1) ff., 13-259 pp. Note: L3-4 misbound after L5. Bound in contemporary flexible vellum, title written on spine in ink. Inscription in upper margin of title: Dom. Prof. Societatis Jesu. Cat. Inscr. Bibl. Cois (inscribed in the catalogue of the library in the housed of the professed, Society of Jesus, at Coimbra?); block a bit loose in binding; some even toning and light foxing to a few signatures, but withal an unusually fine unsophisticated copy. Rare first edition and the first and rarest of this series of Portuguese-language reports from missions overseas, with a decided emphasis on Asia. Separately issued over a period of 8 years, the first volume appeared in 1603 and concluded in 1611. Because the individual volumes treat a relatively brief time-span, the author treats events in much greater detail than can generally be found in individual letters or in most synoptic histories of the Jesuits in Asia. Of all the languages in which the Jesuits advertised their activities in the East, those in Portuguese tend to be the rarest. “In his ‘to the reader’ Guerreiro indicates that he conceived of his Relaçam as a continuation of Luis de Guzman’s two volume Historia de las Missiones…en la India Oriental…China y Japon (1601). As a consequence, he usually begins his accounts with 1600, the date when Guzman left off. In moving from area to area in the East, he ordinarily starts with a review of the number and location of Jesuit establishments, the persons working in them, and the activities with whi … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: The Folio Society. AN. 2011. Hardcover. Full blue morocco with gilt titles on spines and gilt design on upper boards, all edges gilt, internally clean and bright, No.309 of an edition of 1000 produced by the Folio Society to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the printing of the original King James Bible. Two 'As New' volumes in a similar slipcase. Heavy item, may incur additional shipping costs for international delivery. , One of the first acts of King James I when he ascended the throne of England in 1603 was to commission a new translation of the Bible. The previous two centuries had seen the controversial arrival of the first ever English translations, and competing versions abounded. As head of the Church, James laid down the guiding principles of his new Bible, and forty-seven scholars from all over the country including Oxford, Cambridge and Winchester were assembled for the most ambitious translation project of the Reformation era. The scholars aimed above all to be faithful to the original Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic, translating literally where necessary. Though they were not aiming for poetic effect, their approach gave rise to some of the Bible’s most memorable and beautiful idioms. The Bible that resulted from their work became the touchstone by which all other translations are judged and remains one of the most important books in history. , 4to 11" - 13" tall, xxxvi + 884 & vi + 885-1868 pp .
