Album amicorum].
Meissen, Royal School of St Afra, 1602-1603. 8vo. 32 ff., including 15 pp. of poems and 32 pp. with 39 entries and 1 p. with contemporary contemplative entries by three writers. Contemp. limp vellum, using an old manuscript. All the entries in this early 17th century friendship album, which is also notable for its unusual format and binding, date from Zumler's sojourn at the Royal School of St Afra in Meissen in Saxony, where he was educated from September 1598 to August 1604. Hence, this is also an early and unusual example of a public school friendship album, rather than than of a university student. Apart from a number of later clerics - including an early relation of Georg Agricola - most contributors are boys or teachers who later achieved some renown as scholars, such as the humanist Gallus von Racknitz. The entries are prefixed by 15 handwritten pages of Latin poems, all copied from the works of Georg Fabricius (1516-71), who had been director of the St Afra's in 1546. - Noteworthy contributors include: 1) Gallus Baron Racknitz (1590-1658), poet and humanist. - 2) Moritz III Baron Racknitz (b. ca 1590, d. before 1658), cousin of Gallus v. Racknitz. - 3) Michael Fleischer (1580-1653), clergyman in Krakau in Saxony. - 4) Paul Werner (d. 1626) of Gottlau, deacon at Seyda near Schweinitz. - 5) Johannes Helbig (ca 1590-1646), administrator at St Afra's school from 1608 to 1645. - 6) Caspar von Hermsdorf (d. 1619). - 7) Bartolomäus Sättler (dates unknown), a son of Jacob Sättler (1540-1619), clergyman at St Nikolai in Freiberg. Jacob was a son of the cloth-maker Ambrosius … [Click Below for Full Description]

ACHMET F. SEREIM, & Artemidorus Daldianus.
Paris: at the shop of Marc Orry, 1603 - Quarto (216 x 148 mm). Contemporary blind-ruled calf, sometime rebacked and recornered, gilt centre-tools to spine compartments, red morocco label, blind floral tools to corners of boards, edges sprinkled red; in 4 parts, each with a separate pagination and register. Sympathetically refurbished overall, light craquelure, front joint rubbed, cracked at head, ring mark to the board, title browned, occasional damp-staining to margins, generally rather light, old marginal repair to initial blank and title, "Achmetis " sigs. dii-iii duplicated between sigs. M1-2 (as issued, see Atkinson). A very good copy. Title page printed in red and black; woodcut head- and tailpiece and figurative initials. Editio princeps of the Oneirocriticon of pseudo-Achmet ibn Sereim, an important 10th-century Greek manual of dream interpretation based on Arabic sources, with an improved Latin translation in parallel, Greek-Latin printings of three similar texts, and a commentary. Uncommon: a handful of copies traced at auction in the last 50 years. "Achmet" was in fact a Byzantine Greek who "used the nom de plume of Achmet to project an air of erudite, cosmopolitan learning, which the Arabic scholars at this time quite deservedly possessed" (Oberhelman 1991, p. 12). He claimed that his father was dream-interpreter to al-Ma'mun (r. 813-33), apparently unaware that the historical Muhammad bin Sirin (d. 728) had in fact lived a century before the great caliph. Nevertheless, it has been demonstrated that "Arabic dream books provided the principal basis for the work" … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLAT, Sir Hugh.
London: Peter Short dwelling at the signe of the Starre on Bredstreet-hill, 1603. First edition, the superb Macclesfield copy bound in contemporary vellum gilt, of this important work by “Elizabethan London's most curious student of nature” (Harkness, p. 8), which first introduced the process of making coke from coal, a technological innovation that proved crucial in the industrial revolution. This is an extremely rare book – indeed, this is probably the only surviving perfect copy (see below). “The technique of making coke from coal [was] suggested in 1603 by Hugh Plat as a process similar to making charcoal from wood” (Osborne, p. 234). “Coke's superior crushing strength allowed blast furnaces to become taller and larger. The ensuing availability of inexpensive iron was one of the factors leading to the industrial revolution” (Newgera, p. 89). “Plat's approach to his many collaborators and the natural knowledge they shared with him was rigorous, and prefigures in significant ways … the scientific method” (Harkness, p. 214). “Plat's work should not be interpreted as a weak anticipation of [Francis] Bacon but as a very strong stimulus to Bacon's philosophy of science” (Conner, p. 300). ESTC locates copies at British Library [lacks A1], Bodleian [lacks A1, ex Juel-Jensen], Birmingham University [lacks A1]; Marsh's Library Dublin [missing], Glasgow University [apparently lacking one leaf – presumably A1 - as pagination is given as 30 pp.], Folger [sheet A frayed, affecting title & text; ex Sion College], Huntington [lacks A1]; no other copy located in auction records. 1603 1603 - Copper engraving. Hand coloured. Size: 30 x 43 cm. (12 x 17 inches) Fine condition. Magnificent engraving from a later edition of the first illustrated museum catalogue ever printed. The Roman Catholic Archduke Ferdinand II of Tirol (1529-1595) was an avid collector of weaponry and armoury, which had originally belonged to all sorts of princes and potentates. In order to document his interest in history he created the pictorial programme of the so-called "Spanish Hall" and a collection of over 1000 portraits of European noblemen and women. He assigned his personal secretary Jacob Schrenck von Notzing to write a catalogue of the collection of armory (Heldenrüstkammer) housed at Schloss Ambras near Innsbruck which finally was brought to print in 1601. The magnificent catalogue (known as Armamentarium heroicum) shows very rare examples of armours from the 15th and 16th centuries which originally belonged to illustrious persons such as the Emperor Maximilian I or Prince Maurice of Orange. The objects themselves were displayed in Ambras castle in a strict hierarchic order. In 1582 the Antwerp born Augsburg engraver and publisher Dominicus Custos (1550/59-1615) started to engrave the in all 126 portraits after the drawings of Giovanni Battista Fontana (1541-1587). The book was designed so that a full-length portrait engraving of the armour's former owner faced a page containing the biography of the figure shown, which accompanies the engraving. The noble figures are all in full armour and standing in niches with elaborate surroundings of ornamental columns. [Attribute … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABRICI, Girolamo (FABRICIUS AB AQUAPENDENTE, Hieronymus).
Padua: Lorenzo Pasquati, 1603. First edition, very rare first separate issue (see below), “of the first systematic study of the structure, distribution and position of the venous valves. Although the valves of the veins had been observed previously by G.B. Canano and Amato Lusitano, Fabrici studied them anew on the basis of his own observations. Perhaps because he analyzed anatomical structures in terms of their purpose, he interpreted the function of the valves as slowing down the influx of blood in order to distribute it more evenly to the various parts of the body. Although Fabrici's analysis was in part erroneous, <i>De venarum ostiolis</i> became his most influential work, in that it inspired his student, William Harvey, to conceptualize the circulation of the blood” (Norman). “The sumptuously printed folios which Fabricius published in 1603-1604 were issued separately, and unbound. Though they escaped Choulant's notice, they are among the rarest and most beautiful works in the history of anatomical illustration. The plates are magnificent; in fact nothing on their scale had been seen since the days of Vesalius” (Franklin). The work is most often found bound as part of Fabricius' <i>Opera anatomica</i> (1625), without a separate title page. Franklin cites only the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians, the Radcliffe Library (Oxford) and the New York Academy of Medicine – all copies bound up under the 1625 general title but with the 1603 title preserved – and a copy without separate title in the library of the Royal Society … [Click Below for Full Description]

LANDREY, Jean
Clermont: Bertrand Durand, 1603. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (150 x 100 mm). [64], 268, [6] pp. Bound in contemporary limp vellum, spine titled in manuscript (cover soiled). Internally generally quite fresh and clean with only very minor spotting in places. ----Caillet 6073 ("livre curieux et tres rare"); Cioranesco (17th century) 39969. EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION of a work by Jean Landrey on prodigies and monsters as well as a refutation of the Calvinist movement. OCLC/Worldcat locates but three copies in public institutions (University of Pennsylvania, Paris - Saine Geneviève, and Paris - Bibliotheque national). Content: De la nature des comètes, De l'inconstance des Calvinistes, Les comètes présages des malheurs, De la fausse astrologie, De Mahomet et de Luther. For Jean Landrey, a French physician and author of "Teratology or Discourse of Signs and Wonders", the diseases of the body proceed from sin (the cause of infirmity and ignorance). The search for natural causes, of which he does not disregard importance, remains, in his eyes, subordinate to the knowledge and meditation of god's designs, as, for example, god who finds himself natural things to do, the earthquake makes it possible that this trembling may serve as a punishment to men, or of terror, as sometimes also to manifest its glory. Landrey does not pay special attention to monsters, which are but a kind of sign: our god willed to excite men to penance, that not only did heaven have its prodigies, and signs that were appalling, but also the elements, like earth and water: such … [Click Below for Full Description]

MYNSICHT, Adrian von.
, . . Blake, p. 318; Thorndike, pp. 84-86. Third Venice edition of a medical work by the German alchemist Adrian von Mynsicht (1603-1638). "One of the most frequently reprinted works of medical pharmacy was the Thesaurus of Adrian Mynsicht (1603-1638), an M.D. of Helmstedt who became physician to the duke of Mecklenburg and others ... It purported to reveal to the "sons of doctrine and wisdom" a most secret way of compounding drugs based on his own experience and practice" (Thorndike). He was a follower of Paracelsus, opposing the Galenic theory in believing that illnesses were caused by chemical processes instead of fluctuation of the humours. Von Mynsincht was the first to describe emetic tartar. At the end of the text is a small treatise concerning the philosopher's stone. The work is followed by three smaller works by Carolus Musitanus, Andreas Battimelli and Hieronymus Piperus, who wrote additions to Mynsicht's Thesaurus. With a faint stamp on title-page, and a frequently appearing faint library stamp on pages throughout the book. Browned and foxed throughout, with frequent water stains and some occasional spots. Overall a good copy.
