LAVARDIN (Jacques de);
[Click Below for Full Description]

Álvarez Miraval, Doctor Blas
Sanctiago Del Canto, Medina Del Campo, 1597. TAGLIACOZZI, Gaspare.
Gaspare Bindoni, Venice, 1597. First edition, first issue, one of five known large and thick paper copies, of the first book devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Only two of these are in private hands: the present copy, in a contemporary binding, and the Norman copy, which is an ex-library copy in modern binding (sold Christie’s New York, March 18, 1998, $29,900). "Tagliacozzi studied under Girolamo Cardano at Bologna and later became professor of surgery and anatomy at that institution. This work, "Concerning the surgery of the mutilated by grafting," is a classic in the history of plastic surgery and is especially noteworthy for its description of rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty had been practiced in ancient India and, in the thirteenth century, by a family of itinerant Sicilian surgeons who kept the operation a family secret. The volume is divided into two parts: the first, "Theory of the art of plastic surgery," is about the structure, function, and physiology of the nose; and the second part, "Practice of the art," describes and illustrates the instruments and operative procedures for restoration of the nose, lip, and ear. Tagliacozzi also fully discussed the complications, such as hemorrhage and gangrene, that often occurred during these operations. The numerous full-page woodcuts are well-executed and illustrate many of the techniques described in the text. The immediate popularity of the work caused it to be pirated by another Venetian printer, and that is the edition mentioned by Osler" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Rhinoplasty was much in demand in the sixteenth century and la … [Click Below for Full Description]

Although the work of Lopes and Pigafetta enjoyed considerable success in the short term, the enduring popularity of Ortelius' Atlas meant that the myth of a huge central lake was perpetuated by de Jode, Blaeu, de Wit, and others was perpetuated well into the eighteenth century. Lopez lived at Loanda from 1578 to 1587 before returning to Rome at the request of the King of Congo, Don Alvaro, in a vain attempt to interest Pope Sixtus V in the Congo. SIMON MAIOLO Maioli
Ruffinelli e Zanetti, 1597. In-4°; pp. (16), 1177, (3). Dedica a Papa Clemente VIII. BACKGROUND:•John Gerard, (c. 1545–1612) was a botanist and herbalist. He maintained a large herbal garden in London. His chief notability is as the author of a large (1,484 pages) illustrated Herball, or Generall Historie of Plantes. First published in 1597, it was the most widely circulated botany book in English in the 17th century. •The publisher John Norton, who was the Queen's Printer, approached Gerard regarding a possible English translation of Dodoens' popular herbal, Stirpium historiae pemptades sex (1583). This was a Latin version of an earlier work in Flemish by Dodoens, his Cruydeboeck (Herb Book) which had already been translated into English by Henry Lyte, under the name A Niewe Herball in 1578 and had proved popular. •Gerard was not Norton's first choice, the translation having originally been commissioned from Dr Robert Priest, a member of the London College of Physicians who had died untimely. •The completed book appears to incorporate much of Priest's work, together with his own completion of the text in the form of annotations from his own garden and for the first time, some Nort … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUFUS, Quintus Curtius
1597 Alexander the Great Quintus Curtius Rufus Military Conquest Greece Rome “Nothing can be lasting when reason does not rule.” Quintus Curtius Rufus, Histories of Alexander the Great This famous and important work by Quintus Curtius was inspired by the celebrated Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great and was written, more than likely, during the reign of Caligula in Rome. The style of Quintus Curtius’s writing was a directly in line with Livy, whose work on the people of Rome greatly influenced the writing of “Histories of Alexander the Great.” Curtius describes the strange and mysterious things that Alexander the Great encounters on his military expedition and does so with great historical acumen. This book, along with Livy and Tacitus, should always be considered part of the canon of ancient world texts. This 1597 edition was owned by an early 17th-century Jesuit, Michel de Lomenie of Limoges. Item number: #2799 Price: $950 RUFUS, Quintus Curtius Q. VITOZZI, Ascanio
Dimidius Pes, 1597. Two rare plates for the Mondovì sanctuary: some more common engravings from these Vitozzi's drawings would have been printed in the Netherlands by Blau (1682) and Moetjan (1700), while these two, engraved by Fornaseri, are considered more faithful to original lost drawings.

[EVERAERT, MARTIN]
[Leiden, Jan Claesz van Dorp, 1597 & Heidelberg, Commelin, 1602]. 4to. Totalling 240 leaves. ((Collation: *2, 4A-6O4) Missing: general title, introduction etc, and the ephemerides for the years 1590 to 1598 and 1614 to 1615. ¶ See Hoogendoorn, Evera02 and Bibliotheca Belgica E 44 and E 45. Part of a larger work: The edition 1597 starts with the Ephemerides for the year 1590 and ends with the year 1610. (see also TB 1853 & Bierens de Haan 1369) This was supplemented in the Commelin-edition 1602 by the Ephemerides for the years 1611 to 1615: "Une partie de cette édition est de l'impression de Leiden, 1597. According to Hoogendoorn the supplement was printed in Franeker by Gillis van den Rade. VERY RARE EPHEMERIDES by the Dutch physician and astronomer Marten Everaert (1599-1613), probably published in parts. MOST INTERESTING COPY with many contemporary annotations and corrections by a scholar. These annotations refer to natural events (floods earthquakes, severe frost etc.), the war (a.o. Siege of Den Bosch; the conquest and pillage of Budapest), and many references to astronomy: Kepler, Longomontanus, Al-Qabisi, comets. Although the annotations refer a.o. to Copenhague, Bohemia, Bavaria, are mostly written in Latin with some French at the end, and are clearly written by a person well versed in astronomy, we have failed to identify him. NO COPY OF THE CONTINUATION (1611-1613) IN ANY DUTCH LIBRARY.
