HOLY LAND WITH THE WANDERINGS OF ABRAHAM IN BEAUTIFUL ORIGINAL COLOUR?Abrahami Patriarchae peregrinatio, et vita?. Copper engraving published by Abraham Ortelius as part of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, in the (rare) Latin edition of 1595. Beautiful original hand colouring. Size: 35,3 x 46,6 cm.During the sixteenth century in the Low Countries, while Gerard Mercator was the preeminent cartographical innovator and draftsman, his friend and rival Abraham Ortelius became the most important map and atlas publisher. Ortelius? atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, revolutionised geographical publishing. As he expanded it in subsequent editions, he included a number of maps important to the history of mapping the Holy Land; one of which being this beautiful map surrounded by vignettes of the life of the Patriarch Abraham. The map became part of the expanding supplement of historical maps, entitled the Parergon, that Ortelius appended to his atlas of modern maps. Largely the work of the master himself, the maps in the Parergon, and this one in particular, are the best engravings that reflect the widespread sixteenth-century interest in classical geography.Territorial divisions on the map are taken from the story Abraham in Genesis. Ancient tribal names are preserved in the regions of the Philistines, Amelechites, Jebusites, Cenezites, and Gergesites. The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah still thrive along the southern Jordan in the ?Valley of the Forest of Salt?, which was to become the Dead Sea. An inset shows the stages of the wanderings of Abraham, from Ur of the Chaldees, the lower Euphrate … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Georg BRAUN (1541-1622) & Abraham HOGENBERG (fl. 1608-1653). Cologne, 1618. Copper engraving with full original hand colour (very good, two extremely small holes near vertical centerfold, wide margins with especially fine original colour), 42 x 53 cm.
- An engaging early 17th Century bird’s eye view of Törökszentmiklós, Hungary, from Braun & Hogenberg’s magnificent series of town views. This interesting and finely coloured view depicts Törökszentmiklós, a then a fortified town in central Hungary, from the perspective of looking eastwards. The town is shown to be in flames, having been intentionally set on fire by the Ottomans, who on October 20, 1595, had abandoned it in advance of the arrival of the Habsburg forces under Emperor Rudolf II (erroneously referred to on the view as Maximilian). The view is dominated by the great minaret of the Turkish mosque, while nearby are the baths surmounted by two domes. The rest of the town is completely engulfed in flames, a chaotic scene that is juxtaposed against the peaceful, almost bucolic setting of fields and vineyards that surround Törökszentmiklós citadel. Ever since the Ottomans surged into Hungary and crushed the Hungarian army at the First Battle of Mohács (1526), the region had been a flashpoint between the Islamic Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe. Törökszentmiklós was captured by the Turks in 1552, after which the great mosque and other distinctly Ottoman edifices were constructed. During the Long War (1593-1606), the forces of Rudolf II managed to regain control of the town and surrounding region, only for it to be returned to the Turks. In 1685, during the Great Habsburg-Turkish War (1683-99), Törökszentmiklós was re-conquered from the Ottomans once and for all. From 1738, a regular market was held in the town and it soon developed into one of the most pr … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]
