THE FIRST TRUE "ATLAS"-THE WORD CHOSEN BY GERARD MERCATOR TO DESIGNATE A COLLECTION OF MAPS AND ONLY LATER ADOPTED BY ALL GEOGRAPHERS First edition of the first part of Mercator's Atlas, published after Mercator's death by his son Rumold, to proceed the already published second and third parts "Galliae Tabule Geographicae" (1585 and "Italia" (1589). Typesetting of the preliminary text and of descriptive text to maps corresponding generally to Koeman's state A. Most maps are in Koeman state B, although maps V, VI, XIV, XV, XVII, XVIII, XX, XXIII are in state A (where there is a discernable difference between the two states). For nearly sixty years, during the most important and exciting period in the history of modern mapmaking, Gerard Mercator was the supreme cartographer, his name, second only to Ptolemy, synonymous with the form of map projection still in use today. Although not the inventor of this type of projection, he was the first to apply it to navigational charts in such a form that compass bearings could be plotted on charts in straight lines, thereby providing seamen with a solution to an age-old problem of navigation at sea. The influence of his revolutionary ideas transformed land surveying, and his research and calculations led him to break away from Ptolemy's conception of the size and outline of the continents. Unlike the work of Abraham Ortelius, a contemporary and equally celebrated cartographer, Mercator's maps are original. While Ortelius engaged in the reduction and generalization of already existing maps, Mercator checked current knowledge of the earth's topography against its fundamental sources and drew maps in an original manner. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in East Flanders. He studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisius, a Dutch astronomer and mathematician, and began his career as a cartographer in that city, where the excellence of his work eventually won him the patronage of Charles V. In order to escape religious persecution, he moved in 1552 to Duisburg. There, he continued to produce maps, globes and instruments, including his most celebrated work, a world map on eighteen sheets drawn to his new projection (1569). In later life he devoted himself to the preparation of his three-volume collection of maps to which, for the first time, the word "atlas" was applied. The word was chosen, he wrote, "to honor the Titan, Atlas, King of Mauritania, a learned philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer." Mercator's sons and grandsons were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to the great atlas. His son Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition of 1595.         Africa Ex magna orbis terre descritione Gerardi Mercatoris desunta

Meraviglioso esemplare. Etching with engraving, 1595, signed on plate at the bottom of the cartouche. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, wonderful contemporary coloring, small rust, otherwise in perfect conditions. This classic and important map of Africa is directly based on the information of the wall map of the world by Gerard Mercator (1512-1594). Gerard Mercator II (or Junior as he signs himself in the cartouche with the title) was the eldest son of cosmographer, known for his scrupulous attention to the preparation of maps, activities in which involved all the members of his family, as an engraver, printers and publishers. From the perspective of cartographic map contains information derived from maps of Waldseemuller and Gastaldi, both the wall map of 1564 that the papers prepared for the famous book of Ramusio and Dellla Navigazione e dei Viaggi (1554). Ramusio also stem from a wealth of information relating to place names, especially the interior of the continent. The map is known in only one state since its inception in Atlantis Altera Pars, published in 1595, after the death of Mercator, the other son Rumold. Subsequently inserted in some of the Hondius atlases until his last appearance in the French edition of 1633 of Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas. Betz and Vand der Krogt confirmed, according to the text on the reverse, that this specimen is typical of the first edition of 1595. Wonderful example.         Paesaggio fantastico con rovine

Acquaforte, 1595, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Bibliografia: Nagler III, 2864. Dimensioni 335x225. Etching, 1595, signed and dated on lower plate. Magnificent example of a rare work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, light spot on upper left, otherwise in excellent condition Roman drawer and engraver, Maggi realized also the Bichierografia, a collection of 1600 drawings which he dedicated to Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte in 1604. In 1609 he signed a cooperation agreement with publisher Giovanni Orlandi, realizing then many engravings depicting churches. His plates are mentioned in Vaccari?s selling catalogue of 1614. Remarkable are also the engravings depicting landscapes and antiquities, such as the series: Libro di tutte le guglie, (1600) and Ornamenti delle fabbriche antiche e moderne dell?alma città di Rome, 1600. Talking about the artist, Gandellini said he was a Roman painter of villages and good drawer, who realized many plates with etching technique and who worked with Domenico Barriera to depict the fountains of Rome, Tivoli and Frascati. Unidentified collection stamp on verso. Nagler III, 2864. Dimensioni 335x225.

Bulino, fine XVI secolo. Engraving, end of the sixteenth century. From a drawing by Agostino Carracci. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate, in excellent condition. The subject is already played by Francesco Brizio in 1595, and the theme there are several preparatory drawings, none of which seems to be the original of the Carracci. This work is in the same direction with respect to the preparatory drawing and therefore may have been made by looking at the release of Brizio. Not described in the repertories.         "America Sive India Nova. . ." From Atlantis Pars Altera

Duisburg, 1595. THE FIRST MAP TO INDICATE THE EXISTENCE OF THE GREAT LAKES Copper-plate engraving with original hand color: 171/8" x 207/8" (Amsterdam, 1613-1630) References: Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 111 The discovery of America marked a watershed in the development of cartography. Until Columbus' historic 1492 voyage, Europe stood on the periphery of the civilized world and as he himself was to note in the dedication of his published log to Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, "Your highnesses ordained that I should not go eastward by land in the usual manner but by the western way which no one about whom we have positive information has ever followed." Each succeeding decade following the first New World discoveries created its own revolution of knowledge and led to momentous advances in mapmaking. The Mercator family of cartographers produced some of the most important maps of the sixteenth century of which the present map is but one. Gerard Mercator, the patriarch of the family, is famed for the development of Mercator's projection, first demonstrated on his world map of 1569, which allowed any compass course to appear as a straight line. His next project was the creation of a complete world 'Atlas', the first publication to be called by that name. This occupied him until his death in 1594 and the unfinished atlas was left in the care of his son Rumold. The task of the American map, America sive India Nova..., was given to Gerard's grandson Michael and it is the only known map published by him. The map represents a remarkable achievement for both its aesthetic beauty and relative accuracy. In cartographical terms, America was only sixty years old and the information available to Michael Mercator was at best limited. The general outline was taken from Rumold Mercator's world map of 1587). California is correctly shown as a peninsula, and the "Mare dulcium aquarum" probably reflects the first hints of the Great Lakes. Francisco López de Gómara described the discovery of the West Indies as "the greatest event since the Creation of the World, excepting the Incamation and Death of Him who created it," in his 1552 dedication to Charles V of his Historia de las Indias, which perhaps explains the inclusion of small roundels depicting Cuba, Haiti, the Gulf of Mexico. These beautiful insets surround the map and rest amongst ornate Mannerist decoration with intertwining foliage and cornucopias. The present map is from the Hondius edition of 1613, 1623 or 1630. Jodocus Hondius purchased the copper plates in 1606 from the Mercator family and reissued the atlas from Amsterdam. His sons, Jodocus II and Henricus continued with the publication of the maps until 1629 when a large number of the plates were sold to Willem Janszoon Blaeu.. Book.

        Europæ

Antwerp: Ortelius, [1595]. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour, Latin text on verso of one half of the sheet, in excellent condition, apart from a small expert repair to the left blank margin, and a small section of the upper blank margin torn away. 21 1/4 x 17 1/4 inches. A superb map of Europe by one of the greatest names in the history of cartography This important map of Europe derives in large part from Mercator's work; Russia from Jenkinson's map; Scandinavia from Olaus Magnus. The relatively modest cartouche shows a partially covered and apparently distraught Europa sitting on the back of Zeus in the form of a placid bull (he, the unwelcome lover of Europa), both gazing toward Europe, curious about its future. Published in a Latin edition of Ortelius' s ground-breaking atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. van den Broecke, Ortelius Atlas Maps, 5
