NUC locates 5 copies and claims 34 maps, some folding. Not so rare, but the maps are cool and nicely printed.& & Mela's geographical survey of the inhabited world went through many editions. In it he describes the earth's division into northern and southern hemispheres, and the relative positions and boundaries of the three continents and oceans. ""The work was a popular summary, with lists of names, but no mathematical details or distances, though there are some details of physical nature, climate, and customs of lands. Mela's idea of the known world is roughly that of Strabo"" (OCD). Solinus draws heavily from Mela in his Polyhistor ""without acknowledgement ... There is a meagre addition about the British Isles [and] he introduced the name 'Mare Mediterraneum' ""(OCD)."

Sr. Francis Drake, one of the first of those w[i]ch in his sea voyages put a Girdle about the World. He died upon the Seas. Anno Dm 1595

Sr. Francis Drake, one of the first of those w[i]ch in his sea voyages put a Girdle about the World. He died upon the Seas. Anno Dm 1595. [c.1648]. London. Engraving of Sir Francis Drake. Laid on modern paper and trimmed to neatline. 130 mm x 105 mm. A very early and fine representation of Sir Francis Drake, regarded as the first English circumnavigator; pictured holding a pair of compasses over a globe. His main ship, the Golden Hind, circumnavigated the globe, in the search of Spanish gold departing from the Americas. In 1580, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth after landing on the Pacific Coast of North America. To Spanish eyes, his actions were merely privateering, but the fact remains that his discoveries and advances in navigational routes were of extreme importance for the Age of Discovery. Quite possibly issued in Fuller´s Holy State and the Profane State. Early prints of Drake are not uncommon but are increasingly sought after and becoming scarce.

Libro de las Leyes, Privilegios, Y Provisiones Reales del Honrado

1595. Laws and Privileges of Europe's First Agricultural Union [Spain]. [Consejo de la Mesta]. Libro de las Leyes, Privilegios, Y Provisiones Reales del Honrado Concejo General de la Mesta, Y Cabana Real Destos Reynos; Confirmados, Y Mandados Guardar por su Magestad. Madrid: En Casa de Pedro Madrigal, 1595. [vii], CXLII ff. Folio (11-1/2" x 8"). Contemporary limp vellum, inked rules to covers, hand-lettered title to spine, ties lacking. Light rubbing to extremities, some soiling and wrinkling to vellum, which is just beginning to crack through pastedowns, front free endpaper lacking. Large woodcut arms (of guild) to title page, woodcut initials. Some toning to text, a bit heavier in places, faint dampstaining to margins of some leaves along gutter, minor edgewear to first few leaves of text, including the title page, which is lightly soiled. Early annotations to foot of title page and final leaf, apparently an amendment, interior otherwise clean. Ex-library. Residue from shelf label to spine, hand-shelf number to front pastedown, stamp to title page, annotations and stamps to verso. * Later edition. The Honrado Concejo de la Mesta (Honored Council of the Mesta) was a powerful association of sheep ranchers in the medieval Kingdom of Castile. It was the first agricultural union in medieval Europe. Enriched by the high demand for its high-quality wool, it was also the most powerful. The kings of Castile conceded many privileges to the Mesta, and traces of these remain in Spanish law today. Early compilations of laws and privileges circulated in manuscript. The first printed edition was published in 1536. It was reissued, with minor changes to the title, several times into the late-eighteenth century. All issues are scarce in North American law libraries. OCLC locates 1 at Harvard, which has a 1681 imprint. Palau, Manual del Librero Hispano-Americano 137891.
