Theodor de BRY
Francoforte, 1594. This spectacular map illustrates the region traveled by Girolamo Benzoni between the years 1541 and 1556. Taken form De Bry's Grands Voyages, part IV. Centered on the disproportionately large islands of the Caribbean, the map also provides an early delineation of Florida derived from that of le Moyne and is one of the earliest maps to detail northern South America. The islands of the Bahamas are noticeably too large and placed considerably north of their true location. Various legends on the map mark the four voyages of Columbus and mak … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engraving, 1594, signed with monogram and dated on the tablet at lower centre in the image "1594/HG". Il Corbaccio is a work which has a feminist interest for its exploration of misogynistic attitudes. Opinions vary as to wether the work is a satire (a "trattato" or philosophical treatment as Boccaccio seemed to imply) or actually a true reflection of Boccaccio's misogyny. The hero of the tale who is in turmoil because of the unrequited love of a widow,(" the crow" of the title) calls upon Death, and then falls asleep. In a dream the deceased husband of the widow appears, who says he has been sent by God to free him from the labyrinth of love ("laberinto d'amore") which he has stumbled into. The protagonist tells of his love to the wraith, who warns him against women who entrap men with their lust, and elaborates on his own experiences with the widow, highlighting her failings as he perceived them. The hero, convinced by what he has heard wishes to make amends and he is invited by the spirit to use his skills as a writer to tell about the " true nature" of women. London: George Bishop, 1594. [16],717,[24]pp. Quarto. Contemporary calf; neatly rebacked to style. Corners rubbed. Bookplates on front pastedown. Some contemporary notations to first part of text. Internally clean. Very good. Fourth edition of the first major topography of Britain. Camden was urged and encouraged to undertake this massive survey by Ortelius. Ten years in the making, the work forced the author to "get some knowledge of the Welsh and Anglo-Saxon languages, to read and read again both native and other historians, many of whose works still remained in manuscript, and to ransack and select from the public records" - DNB. The work was an immediate success, passing through three edition in the first four years. "If Camden wsa not the first English historian (in the modern sense of the word), topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies, and his BRITANNIA is the first book which shows the need to evaluate sources. It was the revolutionary subject matter, and its even more evolutionary treatment of the subject, which made it at once the vehicle and the model for research in all three subjects for the next two hundred and fifty years" - PMM.
