Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
"Engraving, 1593, signed with monogram at upper left in the image HG. Third state, of five, with the numberal 5 added on the lower left Magnificient example, printed on contemporary laid paper, with "Fleur-de-lis and Arms of Strasbourg" (similar to Briquet 22244), thin margins, some paper folds generally in very good cond … [Click Below for Full Description]

VALERIANO, Pierio Bolzani
Lugduni: Thomam Soubron, 1594. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A remarkable attempt to explain symbolism of the Egyptian and ancient mythology" (Gregorovius) Pierio Valeriano Bolzani was an important early 16th-century Italian humanist most-known for his extensive studies and works on Egyptian hieroglyphics. His best work, 'Hieroglyphica,'is a study on hieroglyphics and the use of allegory throughout Egyptian culture. When Horapollo's work of hieroglyphics was rediscovered, Valeriano sought to publish a work during the craze for knowledge on hieroglyphics. While it took a while for the work to be completed, it is often considered the most concise representation of Egyptian symbols, even though it was largely influenced by Horapollo.

PONA, Francesco.
First edition of a religious emblem book in Latin, built around the theme of the heart, written by the Marinist poet, writer, doctor and philosopher Francisco Pona (1594-1654). Pona's works ranged from scientific treatises and history to poetry and plays. In 1651 he was appointed the official historian to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III.With the early owner's inscription of a painter ("pictoris"), Dominicus Dentonus, at the foot of the title-page. In good condition, with only some small worm holes in the foot margin of the last two leaves and some minor marginal soiling. Durling 1029; Wellcome I, 1594; cf. Schelenz, Gesch. pharmazie, pp. 414-416; for Cordus: DSB III, pp. 413-415. Early edition (the second printed by Vincenzo Valgrisi) of the first official city pharmacopoeia, first published posthumously in Nürnberg in 1546 with an appendix by Jaques Dubois (1478-1555), also known as Jacobus Sylvius. The city of Nürnberg adopted the first edition as the official standard that all city apothecaries were required to follow. The book's influence went far beyond Nürnberg, however, for numerous publishers in several countries produced dozens of editions in the original Latin and in German, Dutch and French translations. Many cities, especially in Germany and the Low Countries, either adopted it as their own standard or used it as a model to write their own pharmacopoeia. The present "Novum" edition follows Valgrisi's 1556 edition, but adds "Medicamentorum omnium compositorum, quae in hoc opere continentur, facultates" (pp. 1-65).Cordus (1515-1544), physician and botanist, studied at Marburg and Leipzig, working in his uncle's apothecary shop in the latter. He lectured at the University of Wittenberg, basing his teaching on direct examination of live specimens, which was unusual at that time. He presented his Dispensatorium to the Nürnberg city council, which rewarded him for it, but he contracted malaria collecting plants in the Italian marshes and died before the book was published. The text is preceded and followed by several leaves with manuscript text, dated 1569 (pastedown), some marginal notations in ink, occasional spots and thumbing. ABREU, Sebastiao d'.
First edition of a biography of the Portuguese Jesuit João Cardim, written by Sebastien d'Abreu (1594-1674), also paying attention to his two uncles who were missionaries in the Far East and Brazil. His uncle Antonio Francesco Cardim (1596-1659), travelled for a few years as a missionary in China, Japan and other areas in the Far East. He was the Jesuit superior in Macau when the shogun of Japan forbade all voyages from Macau to Japan. "Cardim ... sent to Lisbon a report that was printed in 1643 of the execution at Nagasaki in 1640 of four Portuguese emissaries sent to Japan from Macau. Translations of this account quickly appeared in French, Italian and Dutch. ... In 1645 he published at Rome his Relatione of Japan in which he also deals at length with the missions in Macao, Tongking, Cochin-China, Hainan, Cambodia, and Siam, placed within the Jesuit Province of Japan where he had worked from 1623-1638" (Lach & Van Kley). The other uncle, Fernão Cardim (d. 1625), was an influential Jesuit in Brazil, one of the first who went to the mission posts there. He became director of a college in Rio de Janeiro and was made "provincial" of the local area.Lacking final endpaper and the bookblock partly detached from the binding. Some of the red paint from the sprinkled edges is found in the margins of the title-page and the engraved portrait and a few leaves are slightly browned. Otherwise still in very good condition.l De Backer & Sommervogel I, col. 26; cf. Howgego, to 1800, C39; Lach & Van Kley, p. 348, 378.

BEVERWIJCK, Johan van and Jacob CATS.
Penultimate edition of the most influential medical work in the Low Countries during the 17th-century, the collected works of Johannes Van Beverwijck (1594-1647). It was very popular, partly through the inserted poems by Jacob Cats and its illustrations. The three main parts contain a general survey of the several elements of medicine, varying from medical folklore and herbal knowledge to anatomy and chirurgy. At the end of the third part "Heel-konste" letters from and to Van Beverwijck as well as some other important letters are issued. Among these are letters of Descartes on the motion of the hart, written ca. 1637-1643, to and from Anna Maria van Schurman (ca. 1640), and William Harvey. Van Beverwijck was a very well-read man and all his writings include many references to ancient and contemporary authors on the subject. With owners' inscriptions on flyleaf and some modern underscoring and annotations in pencil. Front board and spine detached from bookblock, a few tiny wormholes, a couple tears in the foot margin, otherwise in good condition. BMN I, p. 387; Krivatsy 1191; STCN 840960328; Wellcome II, p. 159..

VALERIANO, Pierio Bolzani
Thomam Soubron. 1594 Hieroglyphica EGYPT Egyptian Hieroglyphics Illustrated Bolzani Horapollo “A remarkable attempt to explain symbolism of the Egyptian and ancient mythology” (Gregorovius) Pierio Valeriano Bolzani was an important early 16th-century Italian humanist most-known for his extensive studies and works on Egyptian hieroglyphics. His best work, ‘Hieroglyphica,’is a study on hieroglyphics and the use of allegory throughout Egyptian culture. When Horapollo’s work of hieroglyphics was rediscovered, Valeriano sought to publish a work during the craze for knowledge on hieroglyphics. While it took a while for the work to be completed, it is often considered the most concise representation of Egyptian symbols, even though it was largely influenced by Horapollo. SACCHI, Bartolomea [Platina]
Venetia: Bernardo Basa, 1594. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The standard reference work on papal history! Bartolomeo Sacchi, or Platina, was a 15th-century Italian humanist who is most remembered for his book 'Vitae Pontificum,' or 'Lives of the Popes.' 'Lives' was an important work dedicated to the papacy of important Catholic popes, but Platina wrote the work through the lens of Roman history with obvious themes of paganism. This book was the first systematic handbook on papal history and praises the punishment of heresy throughout the Catholic Church. Not only was this a famous papal reference, but it was one of the first printed works to contain mention of Halley's Comet. This became an important inclusion because this work often was the lynchpin in the conflict between religion and science. This impressive 1594 edition is illustrated with portrait engravings by Panvinio and was translated into Italian by Bartolomeo Dionigi. This edition is notable as earlier printings did not include the same portraits.

SACCHI, Bartolomea [Platina]
Bernardo Basa. 1594 Lives of Popes Platina Catholic Church Sacchi PAGAN Halley Comet Sixtus II The standard reference work on papal history! Bartolomeo Sacchi, or Platina, was a 15th-century Italian humanist who is most remembered for his book ‘Vitae Pontificum,’ or ‘Lives of the Popes.’ ‘Lives’ was an important work dedicated to the papacy of important Catholic popes, but Platina wrote the work through the lens of Roman history with obvious themes of paganism. This book was the first systematic handbook on papal history and praises the punishment of heresy throughout the Catholic Church. Not only was this a famous papal reference, but it was one of the first printed works to contain mention of Halley’s Comet. Item number: #8547 Price: $950 SACCHI, Bartolomea [Platina] Historia delle vite de i Sommi Pontefici, dal Saluator nostro sino a Clemente VIII. Scritta da Battista Platina . dal P.F. Johannes Stöffler was a 15th-century German astronomer and mathematician who is best-remembered for his works on teaching astronomy, horology, and geography. While he had several popular books, his 'Elucidatio Fabricae Usuque Astrolabii' served as the standard work for astronomers and surveyors of the 16th-century. (Kern). This impressive 16th-century printing of Stoffler's work features impressive full-page woodcut engravings, charts, and navigational tools.
