Mesa, Cristobal de
1594 - The magnum opus of Mesa. 1594. Madrid. Por la biuda de P. Madrigal. 8vo (147 x 92 mm). 8 ff., 324 ff., 3 ff. Handsome light brown crushed morocco, signed Brugalla 1949, boards with gilt fillets and center pieces, all edges gilt, headbands, spine lettered and finely tooled in gilt. Slight soiling to title, overall a very fresh and clean copy, last 3 ff. with marginal restoration away from text. 5,000 $ First edition, the magnum opus of Cristobal de Mesa, a Spanish Jewish convert (c. 1559 – 1633), friend with Torquato Tasso, and with several other relevant Spanish literates and writers, including Miguel de Cervantes; his friendship with Tasso was, however, the alleged source of inspiration and inclination towards the epic. Mesa would later on translate Tasso´s Jerusalem Liberated into Spanish. The work narrates the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, known in Arab history as the Battle of Al-Uqab, a crucial military engagement during the Reconquista, the Spanish medieval effort to conquer occupied Spain back from the Moors, where King Alfonso VIII of Castile and his allies (the Kings of Navarre, Aragon, and Portugal) met against the Berber Muhammad al-Nasir, fourth Almohad caliph in the last years of the 12th century and beginnings of the 13th. The battle was a decisive victory to the Christian coalition, and a heavy defeat for the Moors, which accelerated the crumbling down of their presence in the Iberian Peninsula. It is said that the Caliph had a guard of chained slaves surrounding him. Within the epic, Mesa gives room to dedicate to a love affair in the ranks of t … [Click Below for Full Description]

PONA, Francesco.
1594. First edition of a religious emblem book in Latin, built around the theme of the heart, written by the Marinist poet, writer, doctor and philosopher Francisco Pona (1594-1654). Pona's works ranged from scientific treatises and history to poetry and plays. In 1651 he was appointed the official historian to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III.With the early owner's inscription of a painter ("pictoris"), Dominicus Dentonus, at the foot of the title-page. In good condition, with only some small worm holes in the foot margin of the last two leaves and some minor marginal soiling. TOKUSEN, artist
Four double-page & 15 single-page illus. 30 folding leaves. 8vo, orig. patterned blue wrappers (rubbed), printed title label on upper cover, modern stitching. N.p.: 1594 [but most probably 18th century]. "The Ten Kings was actually written in China more than ten centuries after the Buddha's death and is not part of the traditional canon. This never diminished its popularity, however. There were many versions. This one, with its fifteen judges, is clearly based on the Chinese materials but may have been written in Japan (in Chinese, but with grammatical aids for Japanese readers) between the tenth and thirteenth centuries."-Keyes, Ehon. The Artist and the Book in Japan (NYPL), 5. This book, first published with woodcuts in 1594, went through many printings well into the 19th century. Our edition most closely corresponds to the Indiana University copy (number 5.2 in the bibliographical section of Keyes's book) which is dated "18th century or later." We believe it is an 18th-century printing based on the appearance of the original wrappers. Fine copy. ❧ Brown, Block Printing & Book Illustration in Japan, p. 22-"The book was written by the Chinese priest Zosen, and, according to the colophon in the Japanese edition, was published in China in the year 1582. Afterwards drawings were made from the Chinese originals by the Japanese priest Tokusen, and the work was republished in Bunroku 3, or 1594.".

MINADOI, Giovanni Tommaso
Andrea Muschio & Barezzo Barezzi, Venice, 1594. 4to. pp. [32], 383, [25]. With a 2 page engraved map. Text is printed in Italic type with decorative woodcut initials and head and tail pieces. Bound in modern quarter leather over 19th century marbled boards. Remnants of an early spine label are preserved. End papers are renewed in quality laid paper. Interior pages are generally clean but show occasional light toning, wear and scattered spotting/staining. The title page contains mild discoloration; the inner margin is neatly strengthened (hardly noticeable); M. Maturin’s name is written in a miniscule hand on the upper margin. The map reveals mild spots of discoloration; a small chip and a neatly sealed tear (1 cm) are present on the outer margin; another sealed tear (2.5 cm) on the lower edge is accompanied by a couple tiny worm holes slightly affecting the printed border area. Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi (1545-1618) served as personal physician to Teodoro Balbi, the Venetian consul in Syria. While in Aleppo, Minadoi witnessed the outbreak of the Ottoman-Safavid War (1578-90) fought between the Turkish Sultan Murad III and the Persian Shah Mohammad Hodabanda the Blind. His book recounting the conflict (first published in Rome, 1587 and again in 1588) also records many interesting details of Persian culture (See Dizionario Biografico, Vol. 74, 2010). QUAD MATTHIAS.
1594. Incisione in rame, mm 206x300.
