GOTTFRIED, Johann Ludwig.
Wüthrich, Mathaeus Merian III, 3 & IV, pp. 106, 158; VD17 (6 copies but only 1 complete); cf. Alden & Landis 657/53;for the front panel stamp: cf. Bod-Inc B475; Haebler, Rollen- und Plattenstempels, p. 251, XVII. Second edition, expanded, of Gottfried's very popular chronicle of world history, extensively and beautifully illustrated by Matthäus Merian (1593-1650), one of the greatest engraver-illustrators of the 17th-century and father of the insect illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. The 357 portraits cover men and women from classical mythology, via Greek, Roman and mediaeval history, to monarchs, religious leaders and scholars of Gottfried's own time. The book is especially valued, however, for Merian's illustrations, which begin with the creation and continue with scenes from biblical, mediaeval and modern history, including many battle scenes, executions and martyrdoms, some in Ottoman lands. Some of the illustrations include detailed city views in the background. Both the spine and the front board have been relettered, possibly when the panel stamps were coloured. Occasional slight browning, the left end of the world map folded in and slightly tattered, 1 tear running 1 cm into 1 illustration, a small rust hole in 1 index page and 1 illustration, and an occasional minor marginal stain or tear, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is somewhat worn, mostly around the spine and extremities, some tears at the hinges and small abrasions mostly affecting untooled fields, but otherwise good and with the tooling clear. A popular chronicle of world history, especial … [Click Below for Full Description]

SATYRE MENIPPEE
- S.l., s.n., 1593. Brunet, I, 144. Leber, 4130). Mors un peu frottés, ex. légèrement court de marges sans manque. Quelques rousseurs. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean Bodin
1593. Complete. Very good condition. Rebound in modern, tooled leather. Occasional close cropping at top of some pages with no loss of text. Typical browning of pages."The Demonomanie of Bodin is probably one of the most important books ever published on witchraft." (Wierus books)"Bodin's major work on sorcery and the witchcraft persecutions was first issued in 1580, ten editions being published by 1604. In it he elaborates the influential concept of "pact witchcraft" based on a deal with the Devil and the belief that the evil spirit would utilize a strategy to impose doubt on judges to look upon magicians as madmen and hypochondriacs deserving of compassion rather than chastisement. The book relates histories of sorcerers, but does not mention Faust and his pact. It gave a report of a 1552 public exorcism in Paris, and of the case of Magdalena de la Cruz of Cordova, an abbess who had confessed to sexual relations with the Devil over three decades. Bodin cited Pierre Marner on werewolf accounts from Savoie. He denounced the works of Cornelius Agrippa, and the perceived traffic in "sorceries" carried out along the Spanish Road, running along eastern France for much of its length." (Wikipedia)"And in 1580 he published another book whose currency among those interested in witchcraft matters made it the Malleus maleficarum of the next hundred years". (Clark's Thinking with Demons)----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Contains the Refutation against Jean Wier (Johann Weyer), the … [Click Below for Full Description]

JUSTINIAN I, Emperor (c. 482-565) – GREMP VON FREUNDENSTEIN, Ludwig (1509-1583) – BREDERODE, Pieter Cornelis van (fl. 1585-1593)
[Strasbourg]: Excudebat Theodosius Rihelius (Rihel), [c.1593]. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo (170 x 105mm). [22], 588pp, [38, index]. Large woodcut printer device of full-length, winged female figure standing on a pedestal in a landscape, holding a square and bridle in an oval scrollwork frame, to title. Full-page woodcut illustration of the tree of consanguinity on p. 259. Near contemporary German blind-stamped pigskin, four raised bands; (minor tear with loss on title affecting margin, underlining in some places or light marginal staining, otherwise a good, sturdy copy). Manuscript ex libris in contemporary hand: “Sum ex libri Ioannis Bothay” to front pastedown and title inscribed in near contemporary hand “Ludovico Prissman?” and rubber stamp “K” in purple ink to rear endpaper. Gremp von Freundenstein’s ‘Analysis,’ a well-regarded commentary on the ‘Institutiones’ of Justinian. Rare work which analyzes the Institutiones of Justinian in the form of a series of questions; the work is anonymous but is fastidiously edited by Ludwig von Freudenstein (1509-1583). Freundenstein was a lawyer and state advocate from Strasbourg, who states in his preface to the reader that he does not know who the author is, but that he deserves great commendation. A well-regarded commentary, Analysis is interesting for its insights into the reception of Roman law at the end of the sixteenth century. Rihel was the predominant printer in the Alsacian town of Strasbourg for the latter half of the 16th-century. This is a good solid printing from his well-known press and is maintained in a German bindi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sprache: Deutsch [Attributes: Hard Cover]

It was a series of peace treaties signed between May and October 1648 in the Westphalian cities of Osnabrück and Münster, effectively ending the European wars of religion. These treaties ended the Thirty Years' War. in the Holy Roman Empire, between the Habsburgs and their catholic allies and the protestant and catholic Anti-Habsburg allies and the Eighty Years' War between Spain and the Dutch Republic, with Spain formally recognizing the independence of the Dutch Republic. The Peace of Westphalia established the precedent of peaces established by diplomatic congress, and a new system of political order in central Europe, later called Westphalian sovereignty, based upon the concept of co-existing sovereign states. As European influence spread across the globe, these Westphalian principles, especially the concept of sovereign states, became central to international law and to the prevailing world order. - vita of the artist: Matthäus Merian (1593 ? 1650) , born in Basel, learned the art of copperplate engraving in Zurich and subsequently worked and studied in Strasbourg, Nancy, and Paris, before returning to Basel in 1615. PEUCER, Kaspar
apud Andrae Wecheli heredes, Claudium Marnium, & Ioan. Aubrium, 1593. 8vo. pp [xxxii] 738 [l]. Roman, Italic and Greek letter, historiated woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, printer's device of unicorn with cornucopia on tp. and verso of last, two fold-out synoptic tables after preface, faded contemp MS ex libris at foot of t.p. of George Lindner. Slight age yellowing, a crisp and clean copy, contemp vellum over boards, blind ruled compartments on spine with title in ink, remains of ties, title and author inked on foreedge, all edges blue. Last edition published before Peucer's death, with a new, lengthy preface by the author. Going through four previous Latin editions, and later translated to French, "it seems to have been the most influential of his numerous writings which were concerned with the varied fields of medicine, astronomy, mathematics, natural history, and psychology", (Thorndike VI p. 493). On the whole the work approves of divination in natural circumstances - reading dreams, for instance, or the stars, but agrees with the Bible in condemning certain branches of divination related to demons and witchcraft. Peucer's bias is unflinchingly Protestant, denying the possibility of Miracles, and he attributing the successfulness of relics and invocations of saints to demons rather than divinity. "After discussing divination in general, he turns to oracles and theomancy, then to magic - which he thus incorrectly implies is a variety of divination, whereas the opposite is true - then to divination from entrails, to augury and aruspicina, to lot-casting under whi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AMSTERDAM - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [TULP, Nicolaes and Pieter BERNAGIE (translator)].
Daems & Vandewiele, p. 58 (1 copy); Klaversma & Hannema 1176; STCN (same copy as Daems, lacking frontispiece); WorldCat (3 copies). Rare third edition of a Dutch translation of the Amsterdam Pharmacopoeia. Unlike the original Latin edition the Dutch translation not only lists ingredients, but also provides recipes to prepare the medicines. The numbers for quantities, as the publisher notes in the foreword, are spelled out to avoid any (fatal) problems arising from typesetting errors. The final page gives a list of medical titles printed and sold by the publisher. The original Latin Pharmacopoeia Amstelredamensis, the first Dutch pharmacopoeia, with recipes for nearly 200 medicines, was compiled anonymously by Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) by order of the city of Amsterdam, to serve as an official legal standard for the correct preparation of numerous medicines. Several cities in the southern Low Countries and Germany, and even London, had produced pharmacopoeias before any Dutch city and Tulp based his on those published in Augsburg, Cologne and London, primarily on the 1622 edition of the Pharmacopoea Augustana (providing about 85% of the content), with some material from the 1627 Dispensatorium Coloniense and the 1627 edition of the Pharmacopoea Londinensis. With the engraving and first three pages damaged and strengthened; a large water stain in the lower margin of the first 14 pages and small holes in several pages (no loss of text). Fair copy of a rare Dutch pharmacopoeia.

DE JODE, Cornelius
1593. Map. Original engraving. 16 x 20.5 inches. Archival silver frame 25.25 x 29 inches. This important map renders the two hemispheres on north and south polar projection, with an elaborate and magical surround of clouds and wind-heads. The North Pole shows a rock (the Rupes Nigra) that according to legend, stood in the center of an Open Polar Sea. The legend is derived from Inventio Fortunata, a lost 14th c manuscript that described the North Pole as a magnetic island surrounded by a giant whirlpool and four continents. The continents are separated by rivers through which warm water from the surrounding oceans flowed. As yet undiscovered, Antarctica is imagined and often present on 16th century maps as a giant continent thought to balance out the northern hemisphere. The present edition is one of two new world maps which appeared in the 1593 edition of the Speculum Orbis Terrarrum. This example being a rare variant with blank verso. Right margin trimmed to the neat line. This important map graces the cover of Rodney Shirley's seminal book The Mapping of the World Early Printed World Maps. Cornelius de Jode (1568-1600) came from a family of map makers, engravers, publishers, he was a scholar and a map maker from Antwerp. Iconic map of the upmost rarity.
