JODE, Cornelius de
Antwerp, 1593. Antwerp,, 1593.. Double page engraved map. A fine example of de Jode's second map of South America. The map shows part of Central America and the whole of South America, including a large landmass representing the Tierra del Fuego merging into Australia. It is one of the earliest maps to show the continent on its own, and the earliest Dutch map of South America. The Southern American continent's interior is densely detailed with many place names, annotations and images describing the territory, its people, and the flora and the fauna. Two vignettes show life at a cannibal's campsite, including a human-based dinner, and a battle between indigenous people armed with bows and arrows and explorers armed with rifles. The seas are filled with several vessels, boats, monsters, and more annotations. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas ‘Speculum orbis terrae'. The ‘Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius' atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', which had been published eight years earlier. Ortelius used his influence to disrupt de Jode's application for a royal privilege. By the time this was finally granted, seven years after the publication of the ‘Theatrum', Ortelius' work had become so popular that de Jode's atlas did not sell well, despite the accuracy and clarity of his maps. His son Cornelis (1558-1600) continued his father's publishing business after studying at Douai. He produced an enlarged edition of the ‘Speculum' in 1593, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Cornelis
[Antwerp,: Gerard de Jode, 1593]. [Antwerp,: Gerard de Jode,, 1593].. Cui etiam eandem orbis terrae delineationem, duorum circulorum capacitate huius descriptionis mundi longitudinem documento admirantibus adiecimus anno MDLXXXIX. Double-page engraved map. A map of the world by Cornelis de Jode and published by his father, Gerard. The map shows two views of the world. The main chart is a world map on a rectangular projection. Points of interest include the portrayal of the gigantic southern continent ‘Terra Australis', believed to represent the rest of the landmass implied by the passage of Tierra del Fuego, reaching up to near New Guinea. The South American continent is disproportionately wide. The Strait of Anian separates America and Asia. The two small hemispheric maps to either side of the title show the western and eastern hemispheres on Roger Bacon's circular projection. The imprint at the lower edge states that the map was created by Cornelis de Jode in November 1589 at the Academy of Douai, and published or printed by his father Gerard de Jode. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas ‘Speculum orbis terrae'. The ‘Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. BANCROFT, RICHARD]
London: John Wolfe, 1593. FIRST EDITION. This is an important anti-Puritan work defending the Church of England's ecclesiastical hierarchy, written by the man who would oversee the production of the King James Bible. Future Archbishop of Canterbury Richard Bancroft (1544-1610) shows himself here to be a staunch defender of the Anglican Church establishment against the Puritans' attacks on the position of bishops and their arguments for scriptural supremacy. "Survay" is an extended version of his famous 1589 sermon at Paul's Cross, which Britannica considers "the first statement of the 'divine right' of episcopacy in Anglican apologetics." He defends the episcopacy as both scriptural and historical, and denounces the reformers' rejection of bishops. Bancroft became bishop of London in 1597, and in this position fulfilled many of the duties of the ailing Archbishop of Canterbury, and upon the archbishop's death, succeeded him as senior primate of the Anglican Church. In that position, he was responsible for setting the doctrinal and liturgical guidelines for translators of the King James Bible, overseeing that project. The earl of Clarendon credited Bancroft with rescuing the Church of England "out of the hands of the Calvinian party, and . . . the unruly spirit of the Non-conformists." The present copy once belonged to George Whitgift, brother of Bancroft's mentor and predecessor, Archbishop of Canterbury John Whitgift (1530-1604). In addition to this desirable early provenance, our volume's unsophisticated original binding and crisp internal condition make it particularly … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Merian Matth?us ( - 1650 ) Frankfurt aM; issued in: Frankfurt on Main; date: ca 1646. - technic: Copper print; colorit: ; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 23,5 x 32,5; - description : Map shows the city of Munich when king Gustav Adolf of Sweden is entering the city and receiving the city key.Munich- Munchen, the name of the city is derived from the Old/Middle High German term Munichen, meaning "by the monks". It derives from the monks of the Benedictine order who ran a monastery at the place that was later to become the Old Town of Munich; hence the monk depicted on the city's coat of arms. Munich was first mentioned in 1158. From 1255 the city was seat of the Bavarian Dukes. Black and gold ó the colours of the Holy Roman Empire ó have been the city's official colours since the time of Ludwig the Bavarian, when it was an imperial residence. Following a final reunification of the Wittelsbachian Duchy of Bavaria, previously divided and sub-divided for more than 200 years, the town became the country's sole capital in 1506. Catholic Munich was a cultural stronghold of the Counter-Reformation and a political point of divergence during the resulting Thirty Years' War, but remained physically untouched despite an occupation by the Protestant Swedes; as the townsfolk would rather open the gates of their town than risk siege and almost inevitable destruction. Like wide parts of the Holy Roman Empire, the area recovered slowly economically. Having evolved from a duchy's capital into that of an electorate (1623), and later a sovereign kingdom (1806), Munich has been a … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, Arnold Coninx for the widow and heirs of Gerard de Jode, 1593. Coloured. 335 x 495mm. Christian s'Grooten's map of the course of the Danube through Switzerland Austria and Hungary, but also showing Strassbourg, Venice and Ravenna. Bottom left is a large cartouche containing eleven armorials. Engraved c.1566-1570, this example comes from the 1593 edition of Gerard De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', published two years after his death by his widow and son. This was to be the last edition: after the death of Cornelis De Jode in 1600 the plates were bought by the owner of the Ortelius plates, merely to stop their re-issue. Some of the most famous names in cartography of this period appear on this map: De Jode was the great rival of Ortelius, with whom he had a long-running feud; Gastaldi, De Jode's source, is best known for his maps in the 'Lafreri-type' atlases; and Lucas & Jan van Doeticum, the engravers, are renowned for the flair of their engraving for Waghenaer, Linschoten and Ortelius. Gerard DE JODE (c. 1509 – 1591) & Cornelis DE JODE (1558-1600), after Augustin HIRSCHVOGEL (1503 - 1553).
Copper engraving (Excellent condition, fine, strong engraving impression, wide margins, only a very small repaired tear in the lower blank margin), sheet size: 42.5 x 54.5 cm (16.7 x 21.4 inches), image size: 30 x 51 cm (11.8 x 20 inches). SLOVENIA & Northern CROATIA: A scarce map of Slovenia and Northern Croatia printed by Cornelis de Jode at the very end of the Hundred Years’ Croatian-Ottoman War (1493 – 1593), largely based on a map by the great German intellectual Augustin Hirschvogel made while he resided in Ljubljana. This scarce and fascinating map embraces all of the territory of modern Slovenia and northern Croatia, and extends from the Adriatic Coast, in the west, to the Danube, in the east, and from the Drava valley, in the north, down to include the northern reaches of Dalmatia and Bosnia, in the south. The map is dominated by the Sava and Drava River valleys, which are labeled with numerous towns, including ‘Laibach’ (Ljubljana) and ‘Agram’ (Zagreb). The map is one of the foundational maps of the region and importantly depicts the frontier between Ottoman and Habsburg controlled territory, as it existed between 1552 and 1593. The map was published by the De Jode family of Antwerp, and evinces their especially fine signature talent for map design and engraving. It is largely based on a 1539 manuscript map depicting the Ottoman-Habsburg borderlands made by the great German mathematician, artist, and cartographer Augustin Hirschvogel (1503 - 1553), made while he resided in Ljubljana. Hirschvogel, the son of a successful artist, apprenticed as a glass painter in hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABER JOANNES
Genevae (ma Lugduni), apud Franciscum Fabrum, 1593. Cm. 24, pp. (8) 634 (38). [Click Below for Full Description]

Pergamena semirigida posteriore, tagli spruzzati in azzurro. "Opera contenente in prevalenza dati astronomici. [Click Below for Full Description]

CESALPINO, Andrea.
Second, enlarged and more important, edition of this famous book on which the claims for Andrea Cesalpino as the discoverer of the circulation of the blood have been based. The Peripateticarum Quaestionum was his first published book; in it he was a follower of Aristotle rather than Galen, although he partially reformulated the former's theories. "Cesalpino's most important medical studies concern the anatomy and physiology of the movement of the blood. He gave a good description of the cardiac valves and of the pulmonary vessels connected to the heart, as well as of the minor blood circulation; he also recognized that the heart is the center of the circulation of the blood and accepted the existence of the traditional synanastomoses of the arteries with the veins. He did not, however, discover the major circulation (first demonstrated in 1628 by William Harvey)" (DSB). "No-one who reads Cesalpino impartially can deny the eminent part that he played in the discovery of the circulation of the blood" (Castiglioni, p. 438). Cesalpino was the first to use here the expression circulatio sanguinis (circulation of the blood) in a scientific sense. This edition contains the Quaestionum Medicarum and the De Medicamentorum Facultatibus for the first time. The former is important for recording the results of tying a vein and the first published statement concerning the centripetal flow in veins (on f. 234). G&M 756 (this edition), and see 755 for the first edition of 1571. Both editions are extremely rare. Norman catalogue 431.

CYPRIAN
1593. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "It is a persistent evil to persecute a man who belongs to the grace of God. It is a calamity without remedy to hate the happy." ― Cyprian Cyprian was an Early Church bishop of Carthage from the 3rd-century. Cyprian was the first to write about the primacy of the Pope as it was set out in "The Unity of The Catholic Church". Most of his writings surround pastoral ministry, addressing many of the issues with the Roman government. He also determined prayer to be "the only refuge of the Christian". "The climax of the Italian tragedy of blood may be illustrated by Muzio Manfredi's Semiramis... The plot was based on the semi-mythical history of the fabulous warrior-queen who succeeded her husband Ninus as ruler of Assyria and founded the city of Babylon. The scene is Babylon at the close of Semiramis' career. Ninus has been dead for some time, and their only son is now grown. Manfredi's principal model was Cinthio's Orbecche, but he also borrowed from Speroni's Canace and probably from Groto's Dalida" (M.T. Herrick, Italian Tragedy in the Renaissance, Urbana, 1965, pp. 206-207). [Click Below for Full Description]

Goltzius potrebbe aver visto l'originale a Roma. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bulino, 1593, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a destra, nell’immagine "1593/HG". Hirschmann descrive la Visitazione come "meno magnifica" rispetto all’ Annunciazione. ". Hirschmann attribuisce la causa, almeno in parte, all’imitazione dello stile del Parmigianino. In 4to; pergamena semirigida coeva (mancano i legacci); pp. (16), 115, (1 bianca). Marca tipografica al titolo. Timbro a secco della Theological Society of Connecticut.
[Antwerp, 1593]. DescriptionDouble page engraved map; small tear to top left border not affecting the image, skillfully repaired. NotesThe map shows the Holy Land and the Middle East from Turkey to Persia, including the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus in the west, the Black and Caspian Seas in the north, and part of Egypt and the Persian Gulf in the south. The map is based on Giacomo Gastaldis three-sheet map of Asia. The westernmost part, which is covered by the present example, was first issued in 1559, whereas the following two were published in 1561. Later on, in 1565, Lafreri added two narrow sheets covering the area south of the equator, including most of the Indonesian islands. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes atlas Speculum orbis terrae. The Speculum was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which had been published eight years earlier. Ortelius used his influence to disrupt de Jodes application for a royal privilege. By the time this was finally granted, seven years after the publication of the Theatrum, Ortelius work had become so popular that de Jodes atlas did not sell well, despite the accuracy and clarity of his maps. His son Cornelis (1558-1600) continued his fathers publishing business after studying at Douai. He produced an enlarged edition of the Speculum in 1593, which Gerard had been planning before his death. DE JODE, Cornelis
Collectore Cornelio de Iudeis, [1593]., Antwerp. De Jode's rare map of eastern Asia Double-page engraved map with hand colour. A superb example of de Jode's map of eastern Asia, showing Japan, China and Korea, produced especially for the 1593 edition of the 'Speculum'. The map is based upon the work of the Portuguese cartographer Luiz Jorge de Barbuda, whose map of China also appeared in the work of de Jode's competitor, Abraham Ortelius, in 1584. The circular map is framed by elaborate strap-work and three vignettes of Chinese life, calculated to appeal to European interest. At the upper left corner is a fisherman working with the aid of a cormorant, a practice that continues in rural China; at the upper right there is a houseboat with a pen attached to the side. The lower right vignette is of a cart with a sail attached, the Chinese windcarts that fascinated European observers. The final image is of India, showing two people in Eastern dress worshipping a triple-headed god. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas 'Speculum orbis terrae'. The 'Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius' atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', which had been published eight years earlier. Ortelius used his influence to disrupt de Jode's application for a royal privilege. Gerard DE JODE (1509 - 1591)
This work comes from the second edition of Speculum Orbis Terrarum, published by his son Cornelis in 1591 after his death. De Jode was born in Nuremberg and worked as publisher and printer in Antwerp as fiere rival of Abraham Ortelius. Copperplate, in good conditions.
