LOMBARDI, Peter
1593. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'Sentences' by Peter Lombard was a 12th-century masterpiece of theology. This collection of writings and commentary was one of the most important pieces of theological literature for centuries; in fact, it was required of all medieval theology students to provide a commentary on Lombard's 'Sentences.' Some of the most famous commentaries on this work were written by Aquinas, Bonaventure, Ockham, and Scotus. Lombard focused a lot of ideas in his 'Sentences' around the concept of the trinity - both in the sense of the Holy Trinity, but also in the human sense: mind, love, and knowledge. "Therefore, when the mind knowns itself and loves itself, there remains a trinity, that is the mind, love, and knowledge." Lombard arranged quotes from the Bible in chapters surrounding questions. This was one of the main reasons this work had so much popularity - the questions went unanswered and scholars could create their own reactions. This book became one of the earliest written works to influence church doctrine, especially when it comes to the divinity of Christ. The Council of Trent adopted Lombard's position and official doctrine in the 16th-century. Peter Landry was a publisher from Lugduni in the late 16th-century. His works, other than Lombardi, include works on African witchcraft and demonology, secrets of European nobles, and other esoteric subjects. [Attributes: First Edition]

Morienus (Romanus)
Hanau, Wilhelm Antonius, 1593. 8vo. 79, (1) pp. - (Bound after) II: Mock, Jakob. (16), 288, (14) pp., final blank leaf. Contemporary full vellum; lacks ties. Final and best 16th century edition of this alchemical work originally written in Arabic, the first edition having appeared at Paris in 1559. The legendary Byzantine monk Morienus is said to have gone to Alexandria to study with the Arabian scholar Adfar, whose favourite student he became. Subsequently settling in Jerusalem as a hermit, he devoted his life to the hermetic arts before he learned that Khalid, the Sultan of Egypt, "was desirous to find some one who could interpret for him the writings of Hermes and of Adfar" (Ferguson II, 109). Morienus supposedly went to Egypt and instructed Khalid in the art of creating the elixir for the philosopher's stone. "The ultimate fate of Morienus is unknown, but his conversations with Kalid must have been committed to writing, and they may have come to the West about the time of the Crusades. They were in Arabic, but to make them available they were translated into Latin in February, 1182, by Robertus Castrensis, with a short preface" (Ferguson). No Arabic sources have been discovered, for which reason the attribution has been considered apocryphal, but the author does use chemical terminology with Arabic roots, such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, Arnold Coninx for the widow and heirs of Gerard de Jode, 1593. Coloured. 335 x 495mm. Christian s'Grooten's map of the course of the Danube through Switzerland Austria and Hungary, but also showing Strassbourg, Venice and Ravenna. Bottom left is a large cartouche containing eleven armorials. Engraved c.1566-1570, this example comes from the 1593 edition of Gerard De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', published two years after his death by his widow and son. This was to be the last edition: after the death of Cornelis De Jode in 1600 the plates were bought by the owner of the Ortelius plates, merely to stop their re-issue. Some of the most famous names in cartography of this period appear on this map: De Jode was the great rival of Ortelius, with whom he had a long-running feud; Gastaldi, De Jode's source, is best known for his maps in the 'Lafreri-type' atlases; and Lucas & Jan van Doeticum, the engravers, are renowned for the flair of their engraving for Waghenaer, Linschoten and Ortelius. Österreich - Nieder- und Oberösterreich
Antwerpen, de Jode, 1593. Koeman II, 211. 49. - Restauriert. *** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - Tel. +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0

*** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - Tel. +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0

PORTA, GIOVANNI BATTISTA DELLA. - [RENAISSANCE PHYSIOGNOMY]
Hanoviæ (Hannover), G. Antonium, impensis Petri Fischeri Fr.( Frankfurt), 1593. 8vo. (17x12 cm.). Contemporary full vellum. Title with woodcut printer's device. (16), 534, (55) pp. 2 large woodcut portraits (verso of title-page and verso of last leaf in first quire) and numerous woodcuts in the text, depicting human and animal physiognomies. Title-page a bit soiled and a cut in lower right corner (no loss). 3 leaves in Index repaired in lower right corners with loss of a few letters. Otherwise a fine and well-preserved copy. ¶ The rare second edition (being the first edition printed in Germany) of Porta's seminal work, the richly and well-illustrated "Physiognomia", which is considered the founding work on Physiognomy. Giambattista della Porta was an immensely influential Renaissance thinker, scientist and writer, who contributed greatly to the intellectual era of the Renaissance. His groundbreaking work on physiognomies was originally printed in Italy in 1586 and was planned to appear in a second edition in Italy in 1593, but his work had attracted the attention of the Inquisition, and the printing of the work was prohibited. Thus the rare second edition appeared in Germany in 1593, and after 1600, numerous more editions of the work began to appear. He published his last work in 1610.Porta played a seminal role in the development of the academies of the late Renaissance, and he himself established the Accademia dei Segreti (Academia Secretorum Naturae) some time prior to 1580. It met in Porta's house in Naples, and it was devoted to discussion and study of the secrets of n … [Click Below for Full Description]

DELLA PORTA Giovan Battista (ca. 1538-1615)
GUILIELMUM ANTONIUM, IMPENSIS PETRI FISCHERI FR, 1593. All'interno, numerose illustrazioni incise nel testo a silografia. [Click Below for Full Description]

Cesalpino Andrea.
apud Iuntas,, Venetiis, 1593. Cfr. Graesse II, 5; Garrison & Morton 756; Durling 925; Wellcome I, 1182. Buon esemplare.

JUSTIN, Martyr
1593 HUGE FOLIO Justin Martyr Christian Apology Dialogues with Trypho GREEK “We used to hate and destroy one another and refused to associate with people of another race or country. Now, because of Christ, we live together with such people and pray for our enemies.” Justin Martyr A rare 1593 edition of the collected works of Saint Justin Martyr, one of the greatest figures of Christian apologetics. A Latin translation of Justin’s works did not appear until 1554, though this edition features both the original Greek and the Latin translation. Published by Commelini, this edition is from Estienne’s 1551 edition with added notes and orations from Arcerius and Hoeschelius. Justin’s First Apology is his most well-known work which was written to defend morality of Christian living, and provide philosophical arguments to convince Emperor Antoninus to abandon his persecutions. “Dialogues with Trypho” was a document to show that Christianity is the law by which all men should live and to prove though Scripture, that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah. Balbi de Correggio, Francisco
Pacifico Ponçio (Pacifico Da Ponte), 1593. 4to. [6], 238, [1] p. Woodcut printer's device on title page, some woodcut heading ornaments. Bound in full stiff vellum. It is a poem in eighth rhyme divided into ten songs and preceded by a sonnet dedicated to Muzio Sforza Colonna. The legend of the dark Abindarraez is one of the most famous and popular of the century. XVI; perhaps it was inspired by an episode that really happened during the war of Granada and represented the favorite theme of many "romances". A prose editorial was inserted by Antonio de Villegas in a miscellany of prose and verse that, under the title of Inventory, published in Medina del Campo in 1565. A second narration in prose of the same legend is found in the Diana by J. de Montemajor . This story was also brought to the scene in one of Lope de Vega's youth comedies and is alluded to in a famous episode of Don Quixote. Balbi elaborated this love story of "un moro y una mora", merging many autobiographical details that are extremely useful for the reconstruction of his adventurous life and which greatly widen the traditional narrative scheme. The poem, whose subject was by Balbi judged not inferior to that of the most famous poems of antiquity, should have ended with the praises of Muzio Sforza Colonna: but the poet could not complete this part. The Balbi probably died around 1590. The Historia de los Amores of the Valoroso Moro . was published in Milan by Pacifico Ponçio in 1593. Also in Milan in 1599, for the types of Pandolfo Malatesta, a collection of sonnets under the title of Sonetos de Francisco Bal … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, cm 40 x 59 (alla lastra) più stretti margini. In lastra, sulla sn." Iac. Iordaens pinxit Cum privilegio", sulla ds. "Paul Pontius Sculpsit". PONTIUS, PAUL - JORDAENS, JACOB.
1593. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, cm 40 x 59 (alla lastra) più stretti margini. In lastra, sulla sn." Iac. Iordaens pinxit Cum privilegio", sulla ds. "Paul Pontius Sculpsit". [Click Below for Full Description]
