DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, Arnold Coninx for the widow and heirs of Gerard de Jode, 1593. Fine contemporary hand colour. 340 by 510mm. Six maps on one sheet: Sicily, Cyprus, Corsica and Sardinia (shown side by side), Crete, the Balearics, Malta and Mitilene. From the enlarged edition of De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae' published by his son Cornelius. De Jode's atlas was not a success, losing out to the superior resources and influence of Ortelius, making the De Jode maps harder to find than those of his rival. ZACHERAKIS 3rd edition: 1761; BANK OF CYPRUS: 29.

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, Arnold Coninx for the widow and heirs of Gerard de Jode, 1593. Coloured. 335 x 495mm. Christian s'Grooten's map of the course of the Danube through Switzerland Austria and Hungary, but also showing Strassbourg, Venice and Ravenna. Bottom left is a large cartouche containing eleven armorials. Engraved c.1566-1570, this example comes from the 1593 edition of Gerard De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae', published two years after his death by his widow and son. This was to be the last edition: after the death of Cornelis De Jode in 1600 the plates were bought by the owner of the Ortelius plates, merely to stop their re-issue. Some of the most famous names in cartography of this period appear on this map: De Jode was the great rival of Ortelius, with whom he had a long-running feud; Gastaldi, De Jode's source, is best known for his maps in the 'Lafreri-type' atlases; and Lucas & Jan van Doeticum, the engravers, are renowned for the flair of their engraving for Waghenaer, Linschoten and Ortelius. KOEMAN: Jod 2.

Gerard DE JODE (c. 1509 – 1591) & Cornelis DE JODE (1558-1600), after Augustin HIRSCHVOGEL (1503 - 1553).
Copper engraving (Excellent condition, fine, strong engraving impression, wide margins, only a very small repaired tear in the lower blank margin), sheet size: 42.5 x 54.5 cm (16.7 x 21.4 inches), image size: 30 x 51 cm (11.8 x 20 inches). SLOVENIA & Northern CROATIA: A scarce map of Slovenia and Northern Croatia printed by Cornelis de Jode at the very end of the Hundred Years’ Croatian-Ottoman War (1493 – 1593), largely based on a map by the great German intellectual Augustin Hirschvogel made while he resided in Ljubljana. This scarce and fascinating map embraces all of the territory of modern Slovenia and northern Croatia, and extends from the Adriatic Coast, in the west, to the Danube, in the east, and from the Drava valley, in the north, down to include the northern reaches of Dalmatia and Bosnia, in the south. The map is dominated by the Sava and Drava River valleys, which are labeled with numerous towns, including ‘Laibach’ (Ljubljana) and ‘Agram’ (Zagreb). The map is one of the foundational maps of the region and importantly depicts the frontier between Ottoman and Habsburg controlled territory, as it existed between 1552 and 1593. The map was published by the De Jode family of Antwerp, and evinces their especially fine signature talent for map design and engraving. It is largely based on a 1539 manuscript map depicting the Ottoman-Habsburg borderlands made by the great German mathematician, artist, and cartographer Augustin Hirschvogel (1503 - 1553), made while he resided in Ljubljana. Hirschvogel, the son of a successful artist, apprenticed as a glass painter in hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

FABER JOANNES
Genevae (ma Lugduni), apud Franciscum Fabrum, 1593. Cm. 24, pp. (8) 634 (38). [Click Below for Full Description]

Pergamena semirigida posteriore, tagli spruzzati in azzurro. "Opera contenente in prevalenza dati astronomici. CESALPINO, Andrea.
Second, enlarged and more important, edition of this famous book on which the claims for Andrea Cesalpino as the discoverer of the circulation of the blood have been based. The Peripateticarum Quaestionum was his first published book; in it he was a follower of Aristotle rather than Galen, although he partially reformulated the former's theories. "Cesalpino's most important medical studies concern the anatomy and physiology of the movement of the blood. He gave a good description of the cardiac valves and of the pulmonary vessels connected to the heart, as well as of the minor blood circulation; he also recognized that the heart is the center of the circulation of the blood and accepted the existence of the traditional synanastomoses of the arteries with the veins. He did not, however, discover the major circulation (first demonstrated in 1628 by William Harvey)" (DSB). "No-one who reads Cesalpino impartially can deny the eminent part that he played in the discovery of the circulation of the blood" (Castiglioni, p. 438). Cesalpino was the first to use here the expression circulatio sanguinis (circulation of the blood) in a scientific sense. This edition contains the Quaestionum Medicarum and the De Medicamentorum Facultatibus for the first time. The former is important for recording the results of tying a vein and the first published statement concerning the centripetal flow in veins (on f. 234). G&M 756 (this edition), and see 755 for the first edition of 1571. Both editions are extremely rare. Norman catalogue 431.

CYPRIAN
1593. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "It is a persistent evil to persecute a man who belongs to the grace of God. It is a calamity without remedy to hate the happy." ― Cyprian Cyprian was an Early Church bishop of Carthage from the 3rd-century. Cyprian was the first to write about the primacy of the Pope as it was set out in "The Unity of The Catholic Church". Most of his writings surround pastoral ministry, addressing many of the issues with the Roman government. He also determined prayer to be "the only refuge of the Christian". "The climax of the Italian tragedy of blood may be illustrated by Muzio Manfredi's Semiramis... The plot was based on the semi-mythical history of the fabulous warrior-queen who succeeded her husband Ninus as ruler of Assyria and founded the city of Babylon. The scene is Babylon at the close of Semiramis' career. Ninus has been dead for some time, and their only son is now grown. Manfredi's principal model was Cinthio's Orbecche, but he also borrowed from Speroni's Canace and probably from Groto's Dalida" (M.T. Herrick, Italian Tragedy in the Renaissance, Urbana, 1965, pp. 206-207). [Click Below for Full Description]

Bulino, 1593, firmato e datato in lastra in basso a destra, nell’immagine "1593/HG". Hirschmann descrive la Visitazione come "meno magnifica" rispetto all’ Annunciazione. ". [Click Below for Full Description]

Goltzius potrebbe aver visto l'originale a Roma. [Click Below for Full Description]

POSSEVINO, Antonio (1533-1611)
In 4to; pergamena semirigida coeva (mancano i legacci); pp. (16), 115, (1 bianca). Marca tipografica al titolo. Timbro a secco della Theological Society of Connecticut.
[Antwerp, 1593]. DescriptionDouble page engraved map; small tear to top left border not affecting the image, skillfully repaired. NotesThe map shows the Holy Land and the Middle East from Turkey to Persia, including the Mediterranean Sea and Cyprus in the west, the Black and Caspian Seas in the north, and part of Egypt and the Persian Gulf in the south. The map is based on Giacomo Gastaldis three-sheet map of Asia. The westernmost part, which is covered by the present example, was first issued in 1559, whereas the following two were published in 1561. Later on, in 1565, Lafreri added two narrow sheets covering the area south of the equator, including most of the Indonesian islands. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes atlas Speculum orbis terrae. The Speculum was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which had been published eight years earlier. Ortelius used his influence to disrupt de Jodes application for a royal privilege. By the time this was finally granted, seven years after the publication of the Theatrum, Ortelius work had become so popular that de Jodes atlas did not sell well, despite the accuracy and clarity of his maps. His son Cornelis (1558-1600) continued his fathers publishing business after studying at Douai. He produced an enlarged edition of the Speculum in 1593, which Gerard had been planning before his death. Either Cornelis or Gerard was the first person to make a globe following the geography of Mercator in … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Cornelis
Collectore Cornelio de Iudeis, [1593]., Antwerp. De Jode's rare map of eastern Asia Double-page engraved map with hand colour. A superb example of de Jode's map of eastern Asia, showing Japan, China and Korea, produced especially for the 1593 edition of the 'Speculum'. The map is based upon the work of the Portuguese cartographer Luiz Jorge de Barbuda, whose map of China also appeared in the work of de Jode's competitor, Abraham Ortelius, in 1584. The circular map is framed by elaborate strap-work and three vignettes of Chinese life, calculated to appeal to European interest. At the upper left corner is a fisherman working with the aid of a cormorant, a practice that continues in rural China; at the upper right there is a houseboat with a pen attached to the side. The lower right vignette is of a cart with a sail attached, the Chinese windcarts that fascinated European observers. The final image is of India, showing two people in Eastern dress worshipping a triple-headed god. The map appeared in the second edition of the de Jodes' atlas 'Speculum orbis terrae'. The 'Speculum' was first published in 1578 by Gerard de Jode (1509-1591) with text by Daniel Cellarius. It was designed to compete with Abraham Ortelius' atlas, 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum', which had been published eight years earlier. Cornelis DE JODE (c. 1509 - 91)
E annotazioni relative a flora e fauna. Molto rara. Fine example of De Jode's second map of South America, based largely upon Petrus Plancius' wall map of the World, published in 1592. This map was one of ten new plates engraved for Cornelis De Jode's 1593 publication of the "Speculum Orbis Terrae", a revised and augmented version of his father's 1578 publication De Jode's map of South America is one of the earliest maps to show the continent of South America alone and the earliest Dutch map of South America. The map provides a fine detailed treatment of the known and explored regions of South America, which had been heavily mapped and explored by the Spanish and Portugese by the late 16th Century. The map is among the very few maps which reference the Straits of Magellan with its earlier name, Estrecho de la Victoria, the name used by Pigafetta in his description of Magellan's voyage, named for Magellan's flagship, w … [Click Below for Full Description]

"We used to hate and destroy one another and refused to associate with people of another race or country. Now, because of Christ, we live together with such people and pray for our enemies." ― Justin Martyr A rare 1593 edition of the collected works of Saint Justin Martyr, one of the greatest figures of Christian apologetics. A Latin translation of Justin's works did not appear until 1554, though this edition features both the original Greek and the Latin translation. Published by Commelini, this edition is from Estienne's 1551 edition with added notes and orations from Arcerius and Hoeschelius. Justin's First Apology is his most well-known work which was written to defend morality of Christian living, and provide philosophical arguments to convince Emperor Antoninus to abandon his persecutions. "Dialogues with Trypho" was a document to show that Christianity is the law by which all men should live and to prove though Scripture, that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah. [Attributes: First Edition]

LOMBARDI, Peter
1593. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 'Sentences' by Peter Lombard was a 12th-century masterpiece of theology. This collection of writings and commentary was one of the most important pieces of theological literature for centuries; in fact, it was required of all medieval theology students to provide a commentary on Lombard's 'Sentences.' Some of the most famous commentaries on this work were written by Aquinas, Bonaventure, Ockham, and Scotus. Lombard focused a lot of ideas in his 'Sentences' around the concept of the trinity - both in the sense of the Holy Trinity, but also in the human sense: mind, love, and knowledge. "Therefore, when the mind knowns itself and loves itself, there remains a trinity, that is the mind, love, and knowledge." Lombard arranged quotes from the Bible in chapters surrounding questions. This was one of the main reasons this work had so much popularity - the questions went unanswered and scholars could create their own reactions. This book became one of the earliest written works to influence church doctrine, especially when it comes to the divinity of Christ. The Council of Trent adopted Lombard's position and official doctrine in the 16th-century. Peter Landry was a publisher from Lugduni in the late 16th-century. His works, other than Lombardi, include works on African witchcraft and demonology, secrets of European nobles, and other esoteric subjects. [Attributes: First Edition]

Morienus (Romanus)
Hanau, Wilhelm Antonius, 1593. 8vo. 79, (1) pp. - (Bound after) II: Mock, Jakob. (16), 288, (14) pp., final blank leaf. Contemporary full vellum; lacks ties. Final and best 16th century edition of this alchemical work originally written in Arabic, the first edition having appeared at Paris in 1559. The legendary Byzantine monk Morienus is said to have gone to Alexandria to study with the Arabian scholar Adfar, whose favourite student he became. Subsequently settling in Jerusalem as a hermit, he devoted his life to the hermetic arts before he learned that Khalid, the Sultan of Egypt, "was desirous to find some one who could interpret for him the writings of Hermes and of Adfar" (Ferguson II, 109). Morienus supposedly went to Egypt and instructed Khalid in the art of creating the elixir for the philosopher's stone. "The ultimate fate of Morienus is unknown, but his conversations with Kalid must have been committed to writing, and they may have come to the West about the time of the Crusades. They were in Arabic, but to make them available they were translated into Latin in February, 1182, by Robertus Castrensis, with a short preface" (Ferguson). No Arabic sources have been discovered, for which reason the attribution has been considered apocryphal, but the author does use chemical terminology with Arabic roots, such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Österreich - Nieder- und Oberösterreich
Antwerpen, de Jode, 1593. Koeman II, 211. 49. - Restauriert. *** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - Tel. +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0

Lazius, Wolfgang):
*** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - Tel. +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 0
