BON MERCATI (Girardo) ].
Ros Barber
Sceptre, 2012. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/n/a. Signed by Author. Longlisted for "The Women's Prize for Fiction 2013" and Winner of the Desmond Elliott Prize 2013 and the Hoffman Prize 2011 prior to publication. First UK edition/First Printing. SIGNED by author to title page. No d/w as on publication. Fine unread condition. Synopsis: On May 30th, 1593, a celebrated young playwright was killed in a tavern brawl in London. That, at least, was the official version. Now Christopher Marlowe reveals the truth: that his 'death' was an elaborate ruse to avoid being convicted of heresy; that he was spirited across the Channel to live on in lonely exile; that he continued to write plays and poetry, hiding behind the name of a colourless man from Stratford - one William Shakespeare. With the grip of a thriller and the emotional force of a sonnet, this remarkable novel in verse gives voice to a man who was brilliant, passionate and mercurial. A cobbler's son who counted nobles among his friends, a spy in the Queen's service, a fickle lover and a declared religious sceptic, he was always courting trouble. Memoir, love letter, confession, settling of accounts and a cry for recognition as the creator of some of the most sublime works in the English language, The Marlowe Papers brings Christopher Marlowe and his era to vivid life. Written by a poet and scholar, it is a work of exceptional art, erudition and imagination.

HASENMULLER, Elias
Francofurti ad Moenum, [i.e. Frankfurt]: Excudebat Johannes Spies, 1593. First Edition. Quarto. 323pp, [1]. Later paper boards, rubbed and worn. 'E Bibliotheca Oelsneriana' inscribed to verso of FFEP, remains of faint circular institional stamp to verso of title. A large copy with good margins, but with some softening to fore-edge at extremities. Small hole to head of A2, causing loss of a single letter to running title of verso. Discrete paper repairs to base of title and A2. Some worming to lower margin. Occasional ink underlining, else a crisp copy. The first edition of Elias Hasenmuller's history of the Jesuit Order, with an preface by Polykarp Leyser (1552-1610). Hasenmuller's experiences in training as a novice in the Society of Jesus, combined with his conversion to the Lutheran reformed Church in 1587, led to the composition of this critical account. As one of the earliest accounts of the vanguard of the counter-reformation composed by an ex-Jesuit, it was unsurprisingly swiftly translated into the vernacular (Frankfurt, 1594). Adams H 80.

ROOMEN, Adriaan van [ROMAIN; ROMANUS]
First edition of this very rare work on trigonometry in which the author speaks of François Viète's recent use of analysis. Van Roomen is most commonly known for having proposed a problem in 1593 which involved solving an equation of degree 45. It was the solution of this problem in 1595 that established François Viète as one of the most important mathematicians of his day, as he showed the relevance of trigonometry to solving algebraic equations. As a result of this a friendship grew up between Viète and Roomen. Viète proposed the problem of drawing a circle to touch 3 given circles to Roomen (the Apollonian Problem) and Roomen solved it using hyperbolas, publishing the result in 1596. In the preface ('De operis praesentis ordine') the author speaks of Viete's recent use of analysis ('Hisce incommondis ante paucos annos Franciscus Vieta ... medelam attulit, novis propositis praxibus...'). "In his terminology van Roomen imitated Viète, using the expressions 'prosinus' and 'transinuosa' for tangent and secant, respectively." (Busard in DSB).

ABPC lists just one copy auctioned the past 30 years: Macclesfield (17th calf, browned, head of title torn away affecting line border). The Macclesfield description mentions that the work is in two parts but the 'second' is actually a separate printing from 1607 of sines, tangents, and secants, taken from Clavius.. 4to (243 x 176 mm), contemporary vellum, pp [12] 9-315, gathering b-f with some browning due to the paper, else fine and clean, one wormhole to the inner marging of the last 70 pages and rear board - in all a very go … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yehoshua ben Yosef HaLevi (15th Century), [and] Shmuel HaNagid (993-1056 C.E.)
Moses Elishama ben Zifroni (who printed at the press of Tomaso Ruffinelli), Mantua, 1593. OCLC lists 7 libraries worldwide that have it. Unusually attractive and clean copy. Un-deciphered inscription in blank inner margin of title page. Attractive recent full leather binding. 40 leaves. Steinschneider 5817/5, column 1393. Amram, page 333; STC page 932. In the introduction, the author, R. Joshua Halevi, a native of Tlemcen (presently Algeria) bemoans his fate. Forced by persecution to leave his native land in 1467, he arrived in Toledo (Castile, Castilla). There he made the acquaintance of Don Vidal ibn Levi. The latter gentleman commissioned the present work to explicate Darkhei ha-Gemara (= the ways of the Talmud). The author goes on to express his gratitude to his teacher R. Jacob Hakoehn Ashkenazi, and his indebtedness to the earlier work in the filed by R. Samson of Chinon, Sepehr ha-Kerituth. Interestingly, the book enjoyed popularity among non-Jewish scholars, going through several Latin editions. See JE, Volume XII, pages 600-601. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

77 - Rome - Congreg. Oratorii, 1593 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Nineteen volumes of these scarce ecclesiatical annals, published over the course of nearly a century. Containing volumes IV-XX, and parts one and two of volume XXI. They were first published between 1588 and 1607 as a response to the Lutheran Historia Ecclesiae Christi (History of the Church of Christ) in which the Magdeburg theologians surveyed the history of the church in order to demonstrate how the Catholic Church represented the Antichrist and had deviated from the beliefs and practices of the early church. Long before Baronius was appointed Librarian of the Vatican in 1597, he had access to material and sources in its archives that were previously unpublished or unused. He used these in the development of his work. Accordingly, Annales Ecclesiastici is considered by most as extremely useful and complete. The eminent historian Lord Acton called it the greatest history of the Church ever written. He began writing this account of the Church after nearly thirty years of lecturing at Santa Maria in Vallicella. In the Annales he treats history in strict chronological order and keeps theology in the background. In Latin. The later volumes are a further continuation of the work started by Baronius, by Odorico Raynaldo Tarvisinc. With engraved title pages to each volume, and decorative head and tail pieces. Nineteen volumes of twenty-three only(volumes I, II and III are absent). Condition: In vellum bindings with handwritten spine labels. Externally rubbed, with some marks. Cornelis DE JODE (c. 1509 - 91)
Molto rara. Fine example of De Jode's second map of South America, based largely upon Petrus Plancius' wall map of the World, published in 1592. This map was one of ten new plates engraved for Cornelis De Jode's 1593 publication of the "Speculum Orbis Terrae", a revised and augmented version of his father's 1578 publication De Jode's map of South America is one of the earliest maps to show the continent of South America alone and the earliest Dutch map of South America. The map provides a fine detailed treatment of the known and explored regions of South America, which had been heavily mapped and explored by the Spanish and Portugese by the late 16th Century. The map is among the very few maps which reference the Straits of Magellan with its earlier name, Estrecho de la Victoria, the name used by Pigafetta in is description of Magellan's voyage, named for Magellan's flagship, which illustrated to the west of the Strait. The map also includes detailed information and annotations on the Unknown Southern Continent. The information incudes a number of place names and annotations. In the interior parrts of South America, the larger river systems are shown, along with annotations describing the regions, flora and fauna. The map reached to Cen … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[LEROY, Pierre, Jean PASSERAT, Pierre RAPIN, J. GILLOT, et al.] attributed to
N.p., n.d., Imprime sur la copie de l'annee 1593 . 12mo, a12, B-Z12, aa6, (Q6 mis-signed "R6") 566pp, 2 folding woodcuts, 4 woodcuts in text, 19c. polished calf, fully gilt spine, morocco labels, a.e.g., by Bedford, hinges expertly renewed, a very good copy. An undated, but early, edition of this famous satirical work first published in Tours in 1594. It uses political satire to criticize the excesses of the Catholic League and Spanish pretensions during the Wars of Religion in France. The philosophy of the group of writers who collaborated on its production is that of the "Politiques", a group of moderate catholics who favoured peace, urged a separation of State and Church, sought political accommodation with the Huguenots and encouraged an alliance of the people and the monarchy to save the nation. By the end of the civil wars they had become an exceedingly troublesome thorn in the side of the Catholic League. The text of this biting satire, a major weapon in their fight against the League, was constantly being honed, augmented, and re-published with many editions throughout the 17th century. Of the present edition we find apparently three copies (same number of pages, and imprint), 1 at Bib. Sainte Genevieve, Paris, and 2 copies at Bibliotheque nationale. Nowhere have we found mention of the folding plates present in this copy.

Cosin, Richard]
London: Imprinted ... by the Deputies of Christopher Barker ..., 1593. Three parts in one volume. [30],130,[10],140 [2(blank)]; [4],255,[1(errata)] pp. Small quarto. Old calf, neatly rebacked to style, raised bands, gilt label. Woodcut head and tail pieces. Title slightly smudged and soiled, old tide-mark in gutter of first two gatherings, with faint, shallow shadow of same reappearing in gathering F, visible stubs of early careful strengthening at gutters of gathering C, otherwise, generally a very good, crisp copy, complete with blank 2T4. A revised edition of the work first privately printed in 1591, in an edition of "fourtie copies, or there abouts ..." (Epistle to the Reader). This is one of two variants noted by STC, in this case with the literal date in the title imprint. The three parts have separate titles and independent paginations, but only the third part has a separate register and legitimately appears on its own on occasion. Cosin (1548 - 1597), a graduate of Trinity College, made a considerable mark as an ecclesiastical lawyer. DNB comments on this work: "Far more important was An Apologie: of, and for Sundrie Proceedings by Jurisdiction Ecclesiasticall (1591); only about forty copies were initially printed, but in 1593 Cosin published a greatly enlarged version to refute attacks on the use of ex officio oath made by Sir Robert Beale and the common lawyer James Morice. The Apologie became the standard defence of the jurisdiction of the church courts and high commission." Lancelot Andrewes preached Cosin's funeral sermon in 1597, and appended to part three … [Click Below for Full Description]
