PEUCER, Kaspar
apud Andrae Wecheli heredes, Claudium Marnium, & Ioan. Aubrium,, Frankfurt, 1593. THE MOST INFLUENTIAL OF PEUCER'S WRITINGS 8vo. pp [xxxii] 738 [l]. Roman, Italic and Greek letter, historiated woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, printer's device of unicorn with cornucopia on tp. and verso of last, two fold-out synoptic tables after preface, faded contemp MS ex libris at foot of t.p. of George Lindner. Slight age yellowing, a crisp and clean copy, contemp vellum over boards, blind ruled compartments on spine with title in ink, remains of ties, title and author inked on foreedge, all edges blue. Last edition published before Peucer's death, with a new, lengthy preface by the author. Going through four previous Latin editions, and later translated to French, "it seems to have been the most influential of his numerous writings which were concerned with the varied fields of medicine, astronomy, mathematics, natural history, and psychology", (Thorndike VI p. 493). On the whole the work approves of divination in natural circumstances - reading dreams, for instance, or the stars, but agrees with the Bible in condemning certain branches of divination related to demons and witchcraft. Peucer's bias is unflinchingly Protestant, denying the possibility of Miracles, and he attributing the successfulness of relics and invocations of saints to demons rather than divinity. "After discussing divination in general, he turns to oracles and theomancy, then to magic - which he thus incorrectly implies is a variety of divination, whereas the opposite is true - then to divination from entrai … [Click Below for Full Description]

[SAINT GERMAN, CHRISTOPHER]
London: Richard Tottill, 1593. Hardcover. 124 x 83 mm (4 7/8 x 3 1/4"). 176, [4] leaves. Pleasing contemporary smooth calf, covers with borders of thick and thin blind rules and central blindstamped oval lozenge in an elaborate strapwork pattern, raised bands flanked by plain blind rules, remnants of ties. Title and following leaf a little soiled and browned, other very minor defects, but an excellent copy internally, the text consistently clean and fresh. According to the DNB, this is "surely the most remarkable book relating to English law published in the Tudor period, and quite unlike any book to have come from the pen of an English lawyer before." Commonly known as "Doctor and Student," these dialogues "explore the relationship between the principles of English law and conscience." The first 24 chapters were initially published in Latin in 1528, and the English translation appeared in 1530 with an additional 13 dialogues between the theologian and the barrister. This later printing included an introduction explaining that the book would be in English, rather than the more erudite Latin or French, "because it was 'specially made' for those without legal knowled … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthaus Merian
Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the ?Great Voyages.?Born and trained in Basel , Switzerland, in the early 1600?s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry?s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper.?Topographia Germaniae? was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. ?Topographia Germaniae? was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing?s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries. This engraving … [Click Below for Full Description]

De Jode, Cornelis
Antwerp, 1593. 365mm x 505mm & 360mm x 420mm, together 2 double-page engraved maps, fine dark impressions. This important and rare pair of maps show the Americas at the end of the sixteenth century. They were derived largely from the world map by Petrus Plancius (1592) and the North America is dominated by a wide northwest passage. Although the maps were an advance on existing maps, the lack of success of the atlas hampered their influence. Together, they are among the earliest separate printed maps of North and South America. De Jode, Cornelis
Antwerp, 1593. 320 x 523mm., double-page engraved world map on an equidistant polar projection, fine dark impression. A RARE MAP OF THE WORLD ON THE TWIN HEMISPHERICAL POLAR PROJECTION: A TESTAMENT TO ONE OF THE GREAT CARTOGRAPHIC RIVALRIES. This unusual map appeared in Cornelis de Jode's 1593 edition of the Speculum, an atlas initiated by his father, Gerard, in 1578. Although Cornelis' world map did not use the cordiform projection preferred by his father, it did employ a similar border scheme of windheads and clouds. Gerard De Jode was a contemporary-and rival- of Abraham Ortelius. The publication of his original Speculum was subjected to repeated delays in the granting of the royal privilege probably instigated by Ortelius himself, who may have used his important connections to ensure that his Theatrum was launched well before De Jode's atlas. In spite of its attractive maps, the Speculum did not sell well, and few copies were recorded. The second edition of the Speculum, revised and enlarged, was started by Gerard de Jode before his death in 1591, and completed by Cornelis, who prepared ten new maps including the presnet world map, North America, China, Australia and Alaska. Despite the difficulties surrounding the publication of the Speculum it must have had a good reputation, and Petrus Montanus mentions it in the same breath with Mercator's Atlas and Ortelius' Theatrum in his preface to Pieter Kaerius' Germaniae inferior' (Wardington Catalogue).

First Estienne Edition. "This important edition of the great Athenian orator Isocrates (436-338 B.C.), with Hieronymus Wolf’s text revised by Estienne, who has contributed 7 useful Diatribae, or Dissertations, represents Henri’s last major work – the Concordantiae of the following year had been compiled in great part by his father – and constitutes his last folio edition of a classical text. It is also the only book to issue from his press that year. Estienne nostalgically recalls more prosperous days in his preface, addressed to Marcus Fugger, whom he reminds of his family’s former generosity towards him." [Guicciardini, Lodovico, &] DULCIS, Catharinus
Witeberg [i.e., Wittenberg]: Ex Officina Cratoniana, 1593. Interleaved. A-C8 D1. INCOMPLETE, with 25 leaves only (of 40); lacking D2 through F8. 1 vols. 12mo. Italian as a Foreign Language, Wittenburg, 1593. Rare collection of sayings, anecdotes and jokes written and compiled from Lodovico Guicciardini (1521-1589) by Catharinus Dulcis, for young students of Italian. Dulcis was an itinerant scholar of languages, and evidently the first professor of French and Italian at the University of Marburg, who published this work during a sojourn in Wittenburg in the 1590s. OCLC only records two copies--at the University of Leipzig, and the University of Jena-- and a thorough search of online catalogues throughout Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Italy, and France, and Switzerland, turns up only one other copy, at the University of Gotha, of this peculiar and very interesting book - presumably the first by Dulcis - printed in Wittenberg, whose university provided a home to Martin Luther and Philip Melanchton - and where Prince Hamlet himself studied before returning to Elsinore upon his father's death. The dedicatee of Dulcis' little book makes this Danish-Wittenburg connection all the more intriguing: Dulcis dedicates his book to the learned nobleman, Doctor Holger Rosenkrantz, of Denmark. Albeit incomplete, a rare and fascinating book. USTC 620617; not in Hunt. Vellum, new endpapers. Bookplate. One interleaf bears manuscript translations into French of two of the anecdotes, in what appears to be an 17th- or early 18th-century hand.

Otherwise a fine and well-preserved copy. ¶ The rare second edition (being the first edition printed in Germany) of Porta's seminal work, the richly and well-illustrated "Physiognomia", which is considered the founding work on Physiognomy. Giambattista della Porta was an immensely influential Renaissance thinker, scientist and writer, who contributed greatly to the intellectual era of the Renaissance. His groundbreaking work on physiognomies was originally printed in Italy in 1586 and was planned to appear in a second edition in Italy in 1593, but his work had attracted the attention of the Inquisition, and the printing of the work was prohibited. Thus the rare second edition appeared in Germany in 1593, and after 1600, numerous more editions of the work began to appear. He published his last work in 1610.Porta played a seminal role in the development of the academies of the late Renaissance, and he himself established the Accademia dei Segreti (Academia Secretorum Naturae) some time prior to 1580. It met in Porta's house in Naples, and it was devoted to discussion and study of the secrets of n … [Click Below for Full Description]
