«The climax of the Italian tragedy of blood may be illustrated by Muzio Manfredi's Semiramis... The plot was based on the semi - mythical history of the fabulous warrior - queen who succeeded her husband Ninus as ruler of Assyria and founded the city of Babylon. The scene is Babylon at the close of Semiramis' career. Ninus has been dead for some time, and their only son is now grown. Manfredi's principal model was Cinthio's Orbecche, but he also borrowed from Speroni's Canace and probably from Groto's Dalida» (M.T. Herrick, Italian Tragedy in the Renaissance, Urbana, 1965, pp. 206 - 207). [Click Below for Full Description]

Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Viduam, & Ioannem Moretum, 1593/4. 4to, (16), 120, (8) pp. Engr. publ. vignette on title and woodcut printer's mark on last p., 22 engr. ills. by Peeter van der Borcht. Printer?s device on title page repeated on final page. Original or very early limp vellum, title on backstrip. Many illustrations, some hand-coloured and heightened in gold. Early signature on title-page in gold. Text partially detached from binding, title-page with marginal chipping and staining, withal an interesting copy with early English provenance. First edition of a learned and beautifully illustrated treatise on the Holy Cross by one of the most famous Dutch humanists and philologians of the 16th century. He wrote it at Louvain after his reconciliation with Catholicism, to give a proof of his piety. The engravings are due to Van der Borcht, one of the best book-illustrators of the period. An interesting feature is that the title-page is signed in gold ink in an Elizabethan hand "William Huntly Patior ut potior" and some of the woodcuts are colored and heightened in gold. The Huntly family were nobility and close to Mary Queen of Scots but the motto is exclusive to the Spottiswood family who had nothing to do with the Huntlys or Mary Queen of Scots, so perhaps it was just a familiar Latin tag. The text is heavily annotated throughout but by another hand. The text deals with the history of crucifixion as a manner of execution and describes the different ways to crucify someone as well as the kind of wood for and the construction of the cross. The quite gruesome il … [Click Below for Full Description]

HASENMULLER, Elias
Francofurti ad Moenum, [i.e. Frankfurt]: Excudebat Johannes Spies, 1593. 323pp, [1]. Later paper boards, rubbed and worn. 'E Bibliotheca Oelsneriana' inscribed to verso of FFEP, remains of faint circular institional stamp to verso of title. A large copy with good margins, but with some softening to fore-edge at extremities. Small hole to head of A2, causing loss of a single letter to running title of verso. Discrete paper repairs to base of title and A2. Some worming to lower margin. Occasional ink underlining, else a crisp copy. The first edition of Elias Hasenmuller's history of the Jesuit Order, with an preface by Polykarp Leyser (1552-1610). Hasenmuller's experiences in training as a novice in the Society of Jesus, combined with his conversion to the Lutheran reformed Church in 1587, led to the composition of this critical account. As one of the earliest accounts of the vanguard of the counter-reformation composed by an ex-Jesuit, it was unsurprisingly swiftly translated into the vernacular (Frankfurt, 1594). Adams H 80.. GOSLICIUS, Laurentius Grimalius
Basle: Ostenius, 1593. Title; epistle to King Sigismund; 1-290; (xiv)(index leaves) pages. Bound with . VIGNIERIUS, Nicolaus. De Venetorum Excommunicatione. Saumur: 1606. Title: epistle to Paul V: 1-43 pages. Front endpaper and next two text leaves slightly ragged to one corner not affecting the text, inner hinge slightly spreading leaving a gap between the front cover and the text block otherwise firm. Contemporary yapp vellum. An attractive copy of an important political text and Shakespearian source which was first published in 1568. The particular significance of Goslicius' book lies in its bearing upon Polonius, the well-meaning counsellor in Hamlet. Shakespeare must have been thinking of the Polishman Goslicius' book when he put into Polonius' mouth the sententious utterances of e.g. the famous lines "neither a borrower nor a lender be ." Matthaus Merian
Mathias Merian the Elder (1593-1650) was one of the most prominent members of the leading print publishing family of 17th-century Germany, known throughout Europe for his engravings of cityscapes and landscapes, his scientific books, and his editions of the noted series of travel books, the ?Great Voyages?.Born and trained in Basel, Switzerland in the early 1600?s he began studying drawing, engraving and etching in Zurich with engraver Friedrich Meyer. Merian joined the Frankfurt publishing house of Johann Theodor de Bry in 1616 and, the following year, he married de Bry?s daughter Maria Magdalena. Merian gained his greatest acclaim as head of the family publishing house following the death of his father-in-law in 1623. He rapidly and almost single-handedly built up the house to become one of the most important in Europe, etching most of the plates himself until about 1645, when he increasingly relied upon the help of a growing staff of assistants and pupils, among them Wenceslaus Hollar, Rudolf and Conrad Meyer of Zurich, and his sons Matthaus and Casper.?Topographia Germaniae? was published around 1680 in partnership with Zeiller Martin who wrote the text. ?Topographia Germaniae? was one of the larges and most comprehensive publishing?s of its time with engravings of major European cities and historically important locations, each expertly engraved by Merian and his sons. In total, Topographia Germaniae is comprised of 30 volumes with more than 2,000 individually detailed engravings with maps and views of cities, towns, castles, fortresses and monasteries. This engraving, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Collectif
[Click Below for Full Description]

CESALPINO, Andrea.
Venetiis [Venice]: Apud Juntas, 1593. Second, enlarged and more important, edition of this famous book on which the claims for Andrea Cesalpino as the discoverer of the circulation of the blood have been based. The Peripateticarum Quaestionum was his first published book; in it he was a follower of Aristotle rather than Galen, although he partially reformulated the former's theories. "Cesalpino's most important medical studies concern the anatomy and physiology of the movement of the blood. He gave a good description of the cardiac valves and of the pulmonary vessels connected to the heart, as well as of the minor blood circulation; he also recognized that the heart is the center of the circulation of the blood and accepted the existence of the traditional synanastomoses of the arteries with the veins. He did not, however, discover the major circulation (first demonstrated in 1628 by William Harvey)" (DSB). "No-one who reads Cesalpino impartially can deny the eminent part that he played in the discovery of the circulation of the blood" (Castiglioni, p. 438). Cesalpino was the first to use here the expression circulatio sanguinis (circulation of the blood) in a scientific sense. This edition contains the Quaestionum Medicarum and the De Medicamentorum Facultatibus for the first time. The former is important for recording the results of tying a vein and the first published statement concerning the centripetal flow in veins (on f. 234). G&M 756 (this edition), and see 755 for the first edition of 1571. Both editions are extremely rare. Norman catalogue 431.4to, 20 + 291+ 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

HASENMULLER, Elias
Excudebat Johannes Spies, Francofurti ad Moenum, [i.e. Frankfurt], 1593. Adams H 80. Size: Quarto [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
