Pedro Madrigal, 1593. In folio, cartone recente, cc. (4). [Click Below for Full Description]

Willem BLAEU Amsterdam, circa 1640. Copper engraving with original colour, 38 x 52 cm.
- Map shows the south coast of West Africa, decorated with wild animal figures. Dedicated to Nicolaes Tulp (1593 – 1674), a Dutch surgeon and mayor of Amsterdam. Tulp became is know in the histry of art as a protagonist of the painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to create magnificent wall maps, large-format charts and eventually terrestrial atlases, all decorated with the finest Dutch Baroque artistry. [Click Below for Full Description]

*-------* First edition. Illustrated by 51 emblems engraved by Theodore de Bry, after the author's drawings. This edition has different emblems from those found in 1584 and 1588. Bound with : PIGNORIA. Characteres Aegyptii. 1608.

DE JODE GERARD
1593. Incisione in rame, mm 338x450, colorata d'epoca, firmata in lastra in basso "formis hered? Esemplare perfetto in rara coloritura antica. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, II, Jod 2, pag 210.Copper engraving, mm 338x450, original color, signed "formis hered? Gerardi de Jode" in the plate. A large inset includes 20 costumed figures, representing the dress of various European inhabitants. The map has been published only in this second edition of the atlas.Gerard De Jode was a competitor of Ortelius, active in the same period; but his atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' did not enjoy the same commercial success as Ortelius and now-a-days his maps are much rarer than Ortelius' ones. After the death of Gerard in 1591, the business was carried on by his widow and his son Cornelis, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philippe de COMMYNES (ou COMMINES)
Pour Jacques Chouet. New edition of the revised version by Denys Savage with the Epistles of Sleidan, which seems to have appeared for the first time in 1579 in Bonefons in Paris. Velin full time flexible flap. As pen and time. Traces of laces. The first white layer was not connected. Very pale wetness of p.280 to 330P. Good copy in the old binding. Father of modern history, the book Commynes, which also sets a rule of political conduct of the Great Kingdom, is the largest source of this contemporary. From 1472 to 1483, after having been the advisor to the Duke of Burgundy (Charles the Bold), Commynes will the service of Louis XI, then Charles VIII and Louis XII. There shine through his diplomatic skills, especially in Italy; thereby memoirs are also a history of Europe. We often forget that his exemplary career enjoyed an interlude of disgrace opposing the young Charles VIII by his liberal ideas, he joined the cause of the future Louis XII (conspiracy to remove Charles VIII). He was accordingly arrested and locked up in an iron cage in Loches for five months in 1488. Until now, the work is still studied, Memoirs Commynes never failed to success and the interest. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. per Alberto Coloresco stampatore dell'Academia, 1593. Esse furono infatti impresse in Francia, forse a Parigi (cfr. J. Balsamo, Les origines parisiennes du 'Thesoro politico' (1589), in: "Bibliothèque d'Humanisme et Renaissance"?, 57, 1995, pp. 7-23). S. Testa, Did Giovanni Maria Manelli pubblish the 'Thesoro politico' (1589)?, … [Click Below for Full Description]
