BOISSARD, Jean-Jacques
Francofurti ad Moenum, (Theodorus de Bry), 1593. ______ Format : In-4. *-------* First edition. Illustrated by 51 emblems engraved by Theodore de Bry, after the author's drawings. This edition has different emblems from those found in 1584 and 1588. Bound with : PIGNORIA. Characteres Aegyptii. 1608.

DE JODE GERARD
1593. Incisione in rame, mm 338x450, colorata d'epoca, firmata in lastra in basso "formis hered? Esemplare perfetto in rara coloritura antica. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, II, Jod 2, pag 210.Copper engraving, mm 338x450, original color, signed "formis hered? Gerardi de Jode" in the plate. A large inset includes 20 costumed figures, representing the dress of various European inhabitants. The map has been published only in this second edition of the atlas.Gerard De Jode was a competitor of Ortelius, active in the same period; but his atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' did not enjoy the same commercial success as Ortelius and now-a-days his maps are much rarer than Ortelius' ones. After the death of Gerard in 1591, the business was carried on by his widow and his son Cornelis, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philippe de COMMYNES (ou COMMINES)
Pour Jacques Chouet. New edition of the revised version by Denys Savage with the Epistles of Sleidan, which seems to have appeared for the first time in 1579 in Bonefons in Paris. Velin full time flexible flap. As pen and time. Traces of laces. The first white layer was not connected. Very pale wetness of p.280 to 330P. Good copy in the old binding. Father of modern history, the book Commynes, which also sets a rule of political conduct of the Great Kingdom, is the largest source of this contemporary. From 1472 to 1483, after having been the advisor to the Duke of Burgundy (Charles the Bold), Commynes will the service of Louis XI, then Charles VIII and Louis XII. There shine through his diplomatic skills, especially in Italy; thereby memoirs are also a history of Europe. We often forget that his exemplary career enjoyed an interlude of disgrace opposing the young Charles VIII by his liberal ideas, he joined the cause of the future Louis XII (conspiracy to remove Charles VIII). He was accordingly arrested and locked up in an iron cage in Loches for five months in 1488. Until now, the work is still studied, Memoirs Commynes never failed to success and the interest. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. per Alberto Coloresco stampatore dell'Academia, 1593. Esse furono infatti impresse in Francia, forse a Parigi (cfr. J. Balsamo, Les origines parisiennes du 'Thesoro politico' (1589), in: "Bibliothèque d'Humanisme et Renaissance"?, 57, 1995, pp. 7-23). S. Testa, Did Giovanni Maria Manelli pubblish the 'Thesoro politico' (1589)?, … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE JODE, Gerard.
Antwerp, Arnold Coninx for the widow and heirs of Gerard de Jode, 1593. Fine contemporary hand colour. 350 x 495mm. Old folds in margins flattened. The British Isles, engraved 1570, but this example from the enlarged edition of De Jode's 'Speculum Orbis Terrae' published by his son Cornelis. The outline of the islands is taken from Mercator's eight-sheet map, 1564, but the text comes from the George Lily map of 1546. De Jode's atlas was not a success, losing out to the superior resources and influence of Ortelius, making the De Jode maps harder to find than those of his rival. SHIRLEY: 85 & 119, second state, with 'Cum privilegio' added.

Stengler, Fabius (pseud.).
1593. 4to. (20) ff. Half vellum. One of the most extensive 16th-c. versions of this mock disputation which spawned an entire genre of "hare literature", also translated into German. "The early years of the last decade of the 16th century saw the publication of a pamphlet dressed up as an academic disputation, entitled 'Theses de hasione et hasibili qualitate'. It bears no place or year of printing; its author and publisher are unknown [...] The text, written in a precise and almost elegant Latin, is too critical to be regarded as a mere student prank. The author, it would seem, was probably a witty scholar rather than a student, one endowed with a sense of humour but who first of all wished to show up the deficiencies of his times, thus contributing to the popular genre of fool's literature" (cf. Lindner 288). By 1741 the work had been republished at least 25 times. - Browned throughout due to paper. Erman/Horn I, 7416. Not in VD 16 or Hayn/Gotendorf.

1593. Incisione in rame, mm 364x505, colorata d'epoca. Esemplare perfetto in rara coloritura antica.Copper engraving, mm 364x505, original color. The map derives from Deventer's first map of Brabant which had been published in Antwerp in 1546, whose last known example was destroyed during the second world war. The original map by Deventer had been reduced, engraved in copper and published by Tramezino in 1556, with a second Tramezino state appearing in 1558. The Tramezino map, printed in Venice, was the base for De Jode's map.Gerard De Jode was a competitor of Ortelius, active in the same period; but his atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' did not enjoy the same commercial success as Ortelius and now-a-days his maps are much rarer than Ortelius' ones. After the death o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard De Jode was a competitor of Ortelius, active in the same period; but his atlas 'Speculum Orbis Terrarum' did not enjoy the same commercial success as Ortelius and now-a-days his maps are much rarer than Ortelius' ones. After the death of Gerard in 1591, the business was carried on by his widow and his son Cornelis, who re-issued the Speculum in 1593, most plates were newly engraved, and therefore making those of the first edition extremely rare. A very good example in its original antique color. "In 1578 Gerard de Jode published his Speculum Orbis Terrarum, an atlas aimed at competing with the Theatrum of Ortelius. However, the latter had first been issued in 1570 and had already built a commanding market presence, and so despite de Jode's longer standing reputation the atlas did not sell very well. Only a dozen or so examples have survived. Undeterred, he made plans for another expanded edition, and upon his death in 1591 it was taken on by his son Cornelis.
