Description: Source unknown, to be determined.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Abraham Ortelius' after 'Jacob van Deventer'. Abraham Ortelius was born 1528 in Antwerp. He studied mathematics, Greek and Latin and travelled a lot across Europe. He established a business in dealing with books and drawing maps. His first remarkable map was a 8 sheet world map in the year 1564, but only three copies have survived. In 1570 he issued the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum", the first modern "Atlas" with uniformly sized maps in a systematic collection. The term "Atlas" was not used until Mercator introduced it 20 years later. Most of the maps in Theatrum have been engraved by Frans Hogenberg. At the time of publication, the atlas was the most expensive book ever printed. Nevertheless it was a big success and around 7000 copies have been printed until 1612 in many editions and six different languages. Beside the Theatrum, Ortelius compiled a series of historical maps and published it in the "Parergon Theatri … [Click Below for Full Description]

AULUS GELLIUS (V.115-120-180) :
… [Click Below for Full Description]

Alpini, Prosper.
Venice, Francesco de Franceschi, 1592. 4to. 2 consecutively paginated parts. (4), 80 (but: 84), (8) ff. (Pt. 2 has separate title page). With woodcut printer's device to t. p. and 50 large woodcut plant illustrations (many page-sized). 18th century marbled wooden boards. All edges sprinkled in red. First edition of the earliest treatise on the native Egyptian flora, the author's most important scientific work. The Italian physician and botanist Alpini (1553-1617) spent three years in Egypt studying botany and hygiene as a companion to the Venetian Consul Giorgio Emi. He was "among the first of the Italian physician-botanists of the 16th century to examine plants outside the context of their therapeutic uses. Today this work is best known for containing the first European illustration of the coffee plant" (Hünersdorff). Alpini writes: "I saw in the garden of Halybey the Turk a tree [.] which is the source of those seeds, very common there, which are called Ban or Bon; from them everyone, Egyptians and Arabs alike, prepare a decoction which they drink instead of wine and which is sold in public bars just as is wine here and they call it 'Caova'. These seeds are imported from the Arabian peninsula [.]" (f. 26r, transl.). The coffee plant is pictured on f. 26v, captioned "Bon". - Binding rather rubbed and bumped (especially the spine); trimmed somewhat closely at upper edge; occasional brownstaining throughout with the odd waterstain; slight defect to title page repaired by a former owner. Herodotus; Ctesias; Estienne, Henri; Valla, Lorenzo.
Excudebat Henricus Stephanus, Genevae [Estienne, Geneva]: 1592. pp. [xlviii], 731, [i]. Title printed in red and black. Lacks the 12 leaves of index at the end, and two of the four folding plates. The two large folding engraved plates show: A Plan of Babylon; and the Tower of Babel. Some marginal dampstain and foxing. Folio. 37cm. Text in Latin and Greek. Old manuscript ownership (Sum Laurenti Romanus) and frequent marginal annotations. Contemporary full vellum binding. Called "Edition Secunda", this is the first Estienne edition to combine the Latin and Greek texts in parallel columns. Herodotus (Ca. 484-425 B.C.), Greek historian, called the Father of History, was born at Halicarnassus, Asia Minor. He traveled along the coast of Asia Minor to the northern is lands and to the shore of the Black Sea; he also at some time visited Mesopotamia, Babylon, and Egypt. By 447 B.C. he was in Athens, and in 443 he seems to have helped to found the Athenian colony of Thurii in Southern Italy, where he probably spent the rest of his life completing his history. That classic work, the first comprehensive attempt at secular narrative history, is the starting point of Western historical writing. Herodotus was the first writer to evaluate historical, geographical, and archaeological material critically. The focus of the history is the story of the Persian Wars, but the extensive and richly detailed background information puts Greece in its proper historical perspective. He discusses the growth of Persia into a great kingdom and traces the history and migration of the Greek people. Among hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

I.-(VI)" (S. 685-695). [Click Below for Full Description]
