ORTELIUS, Abraham.
(Antwerpen, Christoffel Plantijn, 1592).Handcoloured engraved map of Romania by János Zsámboky, with 2 decorative cartouches. Ca. 31 x 43,5 cmFrom Ortelius, Abraham. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. - The first map of Transylvania was published in 1532. It was the work of Johannes Honterus (1498-1549). Around 1532 he often traveled to his native Transylvania, gathering information that was to serve in his design of a map of Transylvania, one that he engraved and printed in Basel, and the very first one of the region to be printed. The only known copy of the map survives in the National Library of Hungary. It is known that Honter was not pleased with the map - he tried to get back all copies that he had sent to friends and other scientists. His plan was to improve the map before reprint and distribution. Dedicated to the leadership of Brasov, it was the basic design for all later maps of Transylvania, up to the early 18th century. Abraham Ortelius made the map famous by beautifully engraving it in copper, based on the 'Transilvania' - map from Johann Sambucus, who made a remake of the map of Honterus. (Engelmann 1982, p. 41 - 43)The map of Sambucus does not show the whole region, its focus is Siebenbuergen, the part inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons. Hungarian / Secler names are mentioned for the major cities and the Rumanian population is indicated by generic names. This work is based on the map of Johannes Honter, a Saxon of the city of Kronstadt (today Brasov, Romania) in Transylvania in the Kingdom of Hungary. Born in 1527, Abraham Ortelius started in Antwerp while still a tee … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rouen, Richard l'Allemant, sd. (1592).
Brunet I, cols. 16-17; not in Blackmer. First edition of the second French translation of a history of the conquest of Spain by the Moors, detailing events from 712 to 761 A.D., a description of Spain during the same period, and a biography of Almanzor (ca. 938-1002), the Islamic ruler of the Iberian Peninsula at that time. It was first published in Spanish in 1592, and according to the title-page the history itself is translated from an original 8th-century Arabic chronicle by "Abdulcacim Tarif Abentarique", but now generally believed to have been written directly in Spanish by the "translator", Miguel de Luna (ca. 1550-1619). The same seems to be the case for the biography of Almanzor by "Ali Abensufian". The complete volume was translated into French for the present edition by Guy Alexis Lobineau (1666-1727). With owner's inscription on title-page. Some very minor water stains in the head margin throughout, a couple smudges and the title-page slightly thumbed, otherwise in very good condition. Spine subtly restored and possibly recased and bound a bit too tight.

ARMILLA AVREA ID EST, THEOLOGIAE DESCRIPTIO mirandam seriem causarum & salutis & damnationis juxta verbum Dei proponens: Eim Synopsin continet annexa Tabula. Editio tertiarecognita & aucts. Accessit practica Th. Bezae pro consolandis afflictis conscientiis. CANTABRIGIAE Ex officina Johannis Legatt. 1592 A Golden Chain, that is, the Description of Theology, containing the order of the causes of salvation and damnation, according to Gods word. A view of the order wherof is to be seen in the table annexed. which was used by Theodore Beza in comforting troubled consciences. [Wm. Perkins] Cambridge: Johann Legatt, 1592. 8vo. (iv)368. Vellum. A theological work of fundamental Calvinistic theology, including chapters on Creation and Predestination, the fall of Angels, the Commandments, etc. The first 32 pages are hand written - my guess is that there was a shortage of the first leaf for some reason and the publisher not wishing to waste the remaining printed matter, or to set the type for a very small run, hired a scribe to meticulously fill in a blank leaf word for word. Title edgeworn and nicely repaired (18thc.?); vellum stained and knarled, else VG.

QUAD MATTHIAS
1592. Incisione in rame, colorata, mm 197x283. Meurer, Atlantes Qua 7/68 (62).

Vatican, Rome: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Large Habsburg woodcut coat-of-arms on title; portrait of Archduke Ferdinand II on verso & Habsburg family tree with small portraits on verso of fifth preliminary leaf, both finely engraved & full-page; & 48 woodcut coat-of-arms on preliminary leaves 11-16. 16 p.l., 477, [1], 28 pp. Small folio, fine cont. limp vellum, covers panelled in gilt with gilt fleurons in corners, gilt coats-of-arms in center of covers, yapp edges, ties gone, a.e.g. Innsbruck: J. Agricola, 1592.First edition and a lovely copy of this essential official history of the Habsburg princes written by the librarian and keeper of art to Ferdinand II; complete with the finely executed engravings of the dedicatory portrait of Ferdinand and detailed family tree. Roo (d. 1590), originally from the Netherlands, compiled this chronicle at the castle of Ambras, near Innsbruck, which Ferdinand had restored for his wife, Philippine Welser. Roo died suddenly before the work's publication; nevertheless, Ferdinand's secretary, Conrad Dietz, had it printed by Hans Baur at the archduke's expense. Baur's humanist roman and italic types are quite similar to those originally crafted by Garamond and Granjon. This text was likely only printed in 100 copies and distributed among the royal courts of Europe. The present work begins with a discussion of the Habsburg's earliest origins in the mid-10th century. The Habsburg line was firmly established with Rudolph I's coronation at Aachen in 1273 as King of the Germans and further strengthened by his annexation of the duchies of Austria and Styria. Printed commentary in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

THEOPHRAST. - THEOPHRASTUS, THEOPHRASTOS, TEOFRAST, TEOFRASTOS. - [THE CASAUBON-EDITION]
Lyon, Franciscus le Preux, 1592. Small 8o. Early 19th century half calf with gilt title-label to spine. A bit of wear to hinges and corners, but fine and tight. Internally exceptionally nice and clean. P. Rubow's owner's signature to front free end-paper. Woodcut vignettes to title-pages and woodcut initials at beginning of both parts. (8), 88; 270 pp, 1 blank leaf, (16 ff. of indexes and errata at end). ¶ Scarce first edition thus, being the editio princeps of Casaubon's milestone-edition of the seminal work that is Theophrastus' "Characters", containing, apart from the original Greek text and Casaubon's translation of it into Latin, also Casaubon's highly important commentary of the text. "This edition, which was frequently reprinted (1598-1612-1617-1638, &c.), is in every respect worthy of the high reputation of Casaubon. Both the text and the notes have served almost every subsequent editor. The Commentary is a rich mine of Grecian literature. The editor availed himself of the use of four MSS. in the Palatine library". (Dibdin).Theophrastus (ca. 371- ca. 287 BC), Aristotle's successor at the Lyceum, and probably the most famous Aristotelian of all times, successfully presided over the Peripatetic School for 36 years and here wrote a number of works. The most famous of them is arguably his great moral opus "The Characters", which continues to amaze readers to this day. It introduced the "character sketch", which became the core of the Character as a genre, and as such influenced the entire literary tradition of the Western world. "The psychiatrist who listens in on Pocaterra's Dialogues is thrown into a heady experience not unlike that of an archaeologist who has stumbled into a treasure trove filled with artifacts that make us uncomfortable. It is a time capsule sealed in 1592, four centuries before the appearance of a readership ready and able to understand it. Books on shame are never easy to read simply because shame is the emotion responsible for privacy; within each of us, shame protects the borders of what we hide. In no era has a book on shame been easy to read. This one is not only the first ever written about shame, but a major, historically significant disquisition - a wide-ranging survey of embarrassment, humiliation, mortification, exposure, failure, and the experience of personal deficiency. Pocaterra, in his insistence that shame is a personal experience of unique form, intensity, and importance, demands that we kno … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALINGENIO STELLATO, Marcello
Londini [i.e. London]: Excudebat Robertus Robinsonus, 1592. 255, 255-288pp, [58]. Recent gilt-tooled crushed blue morocco. Marbled endpapers, very occasional annotations to margins, lightly dust-soiled/spotted. A late sixteenth-century edition of an astrological verse first printed in Venice in approximately 1536. The initial letters of the opening 29 lines of the first part ‘Aires’ form the acrostic of ‘Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus’, commonly thought to be the anagrammatic pseudonym of Pier Angelo Manzolli, of Stellata in Ferrare. The erudite didactic poem advocates the pursuit tangible knowledge (comparable to Platonic ideals) as being the path to the contentment of humanity, and vehemently satirises ecclesiastical hypocrisy - particularly in regard to the Papacy. The text proved a sensation throughout Europe, with a plethora of editions and translations being made - including a 1565 printing in English by Barnabe Googe. The reception in Italy however was far from laudatory – the Inquisition deemed the work heretical; upon the authors death his mortal remains were burned, and in 1559 Pope Paul IV commanded the book be added to the first Index Librorum Prohibitorum. PONTANUS (Iacobus).
