PANIGAROLA (Francesco), inter alia
In Venetia, Apresso Francesco de Franceschi, 1592. 8vo, 145 x 98 mms., pp. [xlviii], 1049 [1050 register and colophon], contemporary limp vellume (worn and wrinkled), inscribed on (filthy) front free end-paer, "Francis Fria/ Weston Gorton/ 1883," and on title-page, "Della de San/ Libbreria Romano," the name "Wm Hutcheson" and date "1876" in pencil, except for the rather soiled and worn vellum and the tiry end-papers, a good copy with a clean text. This dissertation by Francesco Panigarola (1548 - 1594) on the passion of Christ was first published in 1587, and this appears to be the second edition. Panigarola led a rather dissipated life as a young adult, but "got religion" around 1566 and began his studies at a catholic theological seminary in Florence in 1567. He was an astonishingly productive scholar, with over 30 books to his name in his short life, most of them controversial ; he did not think much of the Reformation.

Ortelius Abraham (1527-1598) edit.
Valencia - Spagna. Only three found so far". VALDORY (Guillaume)
voir descriptif. VALDORY (Guillaume). … [Click Below for Full Description]

PERNEDER, Andreas
Ingolstadt, W. Eder, 1592. Folio. [Click Below for Full Description]

An extremely rare collection of these fine prints – all with wide margins – depicting the architectural ornamentation, scenic designs, and jousts relating to the event which mobilized, and combined the intellectual and artistic forces of Tuscany at the zenith of its prestige: the wedding of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando I de' Medici, to the French princess, Christine de Lorraine, which took place in 1589. While the pair had already married in 1586, the marriage was not celebrated until Christine's arrival into Florence on 30 April 1589. The festivities required ten months of preparations, and lasted all throughout the month of May until 8 June 1589. They consisted of pageants, balls, games, cavalcades, processions, a naumachia or naval battle in the inner courtyard of Palazzo Pitti, and other performances – including a demonstrative soccer match in front of … [Click Below for Full Description]

West introduced his precedents with theoretical discussions of the relevant legal principles, drawing upon civilian and continental scholarship. The book, which came to be regarded as a work of authority, was useful and popular, and rapidly revised in two parts. The first part of the new edition (dealing chiefly with covenants, contracts, and wills) appeared in 1592 and was reissued with further corrections eleven times between 1594 and 1647' (ODNB). This text also offers extensive information on the Safavid Empire" (iranicaonline) - "Giovanni Tommaso Minadoi (1549 - 1615), als Sohn eines Arztes in Rovigo geboren, studierte in Padua [Medizin] und übernahm einen Dienst bei venezianischen Consulaten in der Levante [in Konstantinopel und Syrien] und sammelte während seines dortigen Aufenthaltes Materialien zu seiner Geschichte des türkisch-persischen Krieges von 1578 - 1588" (Hirsch/H. IV, 214). [Click Below for Full Description]

by I. Iackson for Gabriell Cawood. FIRST EDITION, title within border of printers ornaments, 1 large woodcut initial, 15 woodcut coats of arms within text, all but 1 of them with old hand-colouring, without the initial leaf (blank except for signature mark), first 5 leaves a trifle short at top, some headlines trimmed, small burn hole in L4 touching a couple of letters on the verso, a bit of soiling and some damp-stains, verso of last leaf dust soiled, pp. [ii], 159, small 4to, 18th-century mottled calf, gilt roll tooled border on sides, spine gilt in compartments, twin lettering pieces, rebacked preserving spine, inner hinges strengthened with cloth, corners worn, some contemporary annotations, mostly just repeating in the marginwords in the text, verso of last leaf with an early (if not contemporary) proverb in Italian, and the signature of Peter Wentworth, paper lozenge with 'The Bassett Armes / 1594' printed in red. Rare. 'In 1592 Wyrley published The True Use of Armorie. Sir William Dugdale, who reprinted the main text in his The Antient Usage in Bearing of Arms in 1682, quoted William Burton as saying that his friend Erdeswick had told him that he himself was the real author of the book, "though he gave leave to Mr Wyrley (who had been bred up under him) to publish it in his own name" . Anthony Wood, however, considered the claim one more sign that Erdeswick's mind was unbalanced. Wyrley's research had its special dangers, especially in view of his connection with Erdeswick, a known recusant. In 1592 the Warwickshire recusancy commissioners reported that 'one Woorley, … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Vegetius Renatus, Flavius
Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Ex officina Plantiniana, apud Franciscum Raphelengium, 1592. Second Plantin edition (first was 1585). Printer's device on title page, woodcut diagram of a roman encampment on folded leaf, and 51 woodcuts in the text (machinery, battlements, weapons, etc.). [16], 320; [16], 480, [31] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Plantin Vegetius, 1592. Magnificent edition of the classic by Vegetius, the fourth-century Roman military writer of whose personal life little is known, but whose book DE RE MILITARI has been constantly reprinted and translated into every modern language, has proved to be a primary source of our knowledge of Roman warfare. It contains 5 books: the first is on Recruits and Recruitment; the second, on the organization of the Legions (the Roman infantry); the third, treats of the operations of an army in the middle of a campaign; the fourth, on attacking and defending fortifications; and the fifth, on naval tactics. This edition, printed by the famous Plantin press, with their printer's device on the title page, was edited by the scholar Godescalcus Stewechius and is one of the earliest editions to contain a commentary on Vegetius, along with a discussion of the editor's sources. Equally important to the edition, however, are the woodcut illustrations, which have contributed greatly to a general picture of the Roman army. Adams V-337. Contemporary vellum, slightly soiled and bowed. First 150 pp. affected by slight worming.

It was first published in Spanish in 1592, and according to the title-page the history itself is translated from an original 8th-century Arabic chronicle by "Abdulcacim Tarif Abentarique", but now generally believed to have been written directly in Spanish by the "translator", Miguel de Luna (ca. 1550-1619). The same seems to be the case for the biography of Almanzor by "Ali Abensufian". The complete volume was translated into French for the present edition by Guy Alexis Lobineau (1666-1727). With owner's inscription on title-page. Some very minor water stains in the head margin throughout, a couple smudges and the title-page slightly thumbed, otherwise in very good condition. Spine subtly restored and possibly recased and bound a bit too tight. [Attributes: First Edition]

ORTELIUS, Abraham.
(Antwerpen, Christoffel Plantijn, 1592).Handcoloured engraved map of Romania by János Zsámboky, with 2 decorative cartouches. Ca. 31 x 43,5 cmFrom Ortelius, Abraham. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. - The first map of Transylvania was published in 1532. It was the work of Johannes Honterus (1498-1549). Around 1532 he often traveled to his native Transylvania, gathering information that was to serve in his design of a map of Transylvania, one that he engraved and printed in Basel, and the very first one of the region to be printed. The only known copy of the map survives in the National Library of Hungary. It is known that Honter was not pleased with the map - he tried to get back all copies that he had sent to friends and other scientists. His plan was to improve the map before reprint and distribution. Dedicated to the leadership of Brasov, it was the basic design for all later maps of Transylvania, up to the early 18th century. Abraham Ortelius made the map famous by beautifully engraving it in copper, based on the ‘Transilvania' - map from Johann Sambucus, who made a remake of the map of Honterus. (Engelmann 1982, p. 41 - 43)The map of Sambucus does not show the whole region, its focus is Siebenbuergen, the part inhabited by Transylvanian Saxons. Hungarian / Secler names are mentioned for the major cities and the Rumanian population is indicated by generic names. This work is based on the map of Johannes Honter, a Saxon of the city of Kronstadt (today Brasov, Romania) in Transylvania in the Kingdom of Hungary. Born in 1527, Abraham Ortelius started in Antwerp while still a tee … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARSILIO DA PADOVA
excudebat Ioannes Wechelus, 1592. Cm. 17,5, pp. (16) 479 (1). [Click Below for Full Description]

Vatican, Rome: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! PERNEDER, Andreas.
Ingolstadt, W. Eder, 1592. Folio. [Click Below for Full Description]

QUAD MATTHIAS.
Incisione in rame, mm 210x270. 214
