VINCIOLO, Federico di
Lyon, Léonard Odet, 1592-1599. ______ Format : In-4. *-------* An early embroidery and lace pattern book. It is illustrated with 112 full-page woodcuts.
VALLES, Francisco
Coloniae: Francisci de Franciscis, & Ioannis Baptistæ Ciotti, 1592. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Known as one of the best and most important physicians during the Renaissance in Spain, Francisco Valles was the personal physician of King Philip II of Spain. Though today, he is probably best remembered for his book on general medicine which, according to 'Heirs of Hippocrates', "covers a variety of subjects and relies heavily upon references and quotations from Galen, Aristotle, Hippocrates, A vicenna, and other early medical authorities. Works such as this continued the long dependence on Galen and his predecessors and contained little original thought or new knowledge.".

Herodotus
H. Estienne, Geneva, 1592. Folio (14-1/2" tall). (48),731,(25)pp. Index. With the 4 large folding woodcut plates (see below). Title printed in red & black with Estienne woodcut device. Orig. blind tooled vellum, both covers with large central ornament. Spine with 5 raised bands. Front hinge with cracks, as well as the bottom portion of the rear hinge, but cords are holding well. Some old light water staining at lower and outer margins, mostly quite faded. This is the second Estienne edition of Herodotus, greatly improved. The Valla Latin translation appeared in 1566, and the Greek text in 1570. To quote Schreiber, "In this second edition he joins the two, printing them in parallel columns on the same page, and has corrected the Greek text and thoroughly revised Valla's translation." This copy with 5 large woodcut plates. The woodcut of the bridge of Babylon and the Semiramis Citadel -- often found on a single plate -- have been separated. All of the plates are in fine condition. They are often found quite ragged or not at all (all 3 copies currently in the marketplace lack the plates). Schreiber also notes, "These plates are often lacking, but form an integral part of the book, since they are called for in the title." See Renouard 155 #3; Schreiber #222; Adams H-398. DE LUNA, Miguel.
First edition of the second French translation of a history of the conquest of Spain by the Moors, detailing events from 712 to 761 A.D., a description of Spain during the same period, and a biography of Almanzor (ca. 938-1002), the Islamic ruler of the Iberian Peninsula at that time. It was first published in Spanish in 1592, and according to the title-page the history itself is translated from an original 8th-century Arabic chronicle by "Abdulcacim Tarif Abentarique", but now generally believed to have been written directly in Spanish by the "translator", Miguel de Luna (ca. 1550-1619). The same seems to be the case for the biography of Almanzor by "Ali Abensufian". The complete volume was translated into French for the present edition by Guy Alexis Lobineau (1666-1727). With owner's inscription on title-page. Some very minor water stains in the head margin throughout, a couple smudges and the title-page slightly thumbed, otherwise in very good condition. Spine subtly restored and possibly recased and bound a bit too tight.Brunet I, cols. 16-17; not in Blackmer..

Though today, he is probably best remembered for his book on general medicine which, according to Heirs of Hippocrates , covers a variety of subjects and relies heavily upon references and quotations from Galen, Aristotle, Hippocrates, A vicenna, and other early medical authorities. HERTZOG (Bernhard)
(1592) Saffroy, II, 16386. Ritter BMS 1202-1204. Ritter BNUS 1162.

Misc.
Geneva: Heirs of E. Vignon and J. Stoer, 1592. My condition notes exceed the character limit ebay allows here. Please see my description for the complete condition notes. A stunning 17th century binding graces this 16th century Greek Latin Lexicon (two volumes, in one binding). Bound for the Bishop Jacques Raoul de la Guibourgere, with his coat-of-arms at the center of the boards. Within, there is an inscription mentioning "Raoult de la Guibourgere", Latin orations, and "sigillum". I'm struggling to translate it, but it likely is celebrating the Bishop's completion of training for ecclesiastical work (1630). El Gascon is the most noted binder from this period (circa 1630) and if you study his works you'll see many similar tools; the two binders share this overall arrangement, the fan tool, the sun like flower tool, the roll of dotted alternating circle square triangles, and some of the vine work. Gascon's works seem (to me) to be a little more precise, and the tools slightly sharper, so I believe this to be "The Imitator of El Gascon", who is also well-known and often mentioned. For example, the Bibliophile (who posts on Blogspot), in their post on El Gascon, exhibits a binding (sold in Versaille March 30, 2014) that was attributed to "The Imitator" (by the El Gascon researcher, Raphael Esmerian) that is a near-twin of this binding. This Greek/Latin Lexicon is extensive and would still provide value in languages studies today. The first volume is the Lexicon (762 pages) and the second volume (1023 pages) is a Greek dictionary and thesaurus, with the words in Greek and the w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Piotr Skarga
Krakow (Cracow): 1592. Vpominanie do ewanyelikow, y do wszystkich spolem nie Katholikow, iz o skazenie zborow krakowskich gniewac y nic nowego y burzliwego zaczynac niemaia - 1592 Publisher: W Architypography: Krola J M. y Koscielney Lazarzowej / Drukarnia Lazarzowa (Officina Lazari) (190 x 155 mm). Text in Polish. 88 pages, vignette, initials. Religious printing directed against the infidels, especially against the Warsaw Confederation passed in 1573, an agreement between Christian denominations. The Warsaw Confederation guaranteed the Polish nobility, regardless of religion, equality and state protection, and eternal peace between those differing in faith. Father Skarga, however, believed that Poland should be unified religiously. The work published in 1592 simultaneously in Cracow and Poznan, anonymously, although it is not questioned by its authorship, because it was included with the changes to the Kazania o siedmiu sakramentach (Cracow 1600). The complaint justified the perpetrators of the church-based tumult in Cracow in 1591. He explained that it was only the children who started the innocent fun "from the church, they got a rag and ripped off and used to play in the church". He blamed Protestant, who reacted with the weapon "As the wolves between sheep, with sharp swords, the innocent people beat, sleave, chopped, and murdered [.] so that two hundred injured were counted". The Vpominanie do ewanyelikow brought a biased and incomplete account of the events of Cracow. The cloth made by the children was in fact a puppet depicting Satan, the father of "heresy".
