1592. in a neat hand, their signatures with elaborate flourishes against forgery, certifying that 'honneste homme' (respectable person) Pierre Vallée of Argentan, with his wife Marie Guilbert and wife's brother Filipet Guilbert, have renounced to Ravan de Morel, Sieur of Aubigny [2 miles north of Falaise], all their rights in an annual 40 livres from Martin Vieillot (part of an annual mortgage of 50 livres contracted in 1592), in consideration of the Sieur d'Aubigny's single payment to the husband of 400 livres, vellum, 3 sides 12½" x 9", contemporary summary on side 4, Argentan (35 miles south of Caen), 16th April first occurrences of names neatly underlined in later blue pencil The Morel family had been at Aubigny since 1522. The Sieur d'Aubigny is described in the document as "Knight of the Order of the King and Gentleman in Ordinary of His Chamber", identifying him as the father rather than the son of the same Christian name, (here spelt Ravein). He married in 1565 and was also Chamberlain to the Duke of Alençon. (See La Chesnaye, who gives his rank as Count). Apparently Aubigny was already paying 40 livres a year to Vieillot, by a contract signed at Falaise in 1611, so it was simpler to give Vallée the lump sum and reduce Vieillot's debt to Vallée. All parties are anxious that the sum of 400 livres, clearly in trust for the wife, is kept secure, and the husband undertakes to reinvest it in other regular payment or heritable property. Her brother stands surety for the husband in this regard. Other names mentioned are Martin Pantin, Curé of Aubigny, proxy for Morel; … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ortelius, Abraham
Amsterdam, 1592. A very early original color copper engraved map of the Spanish empire in the New World, made up of 3 maps on one sheet, the largest showing central and South America (Peru); the second showing Florida and the southeast; and the third, Guastecan (Huasteca), a northeastern province of Mexico. The map of Florida is important as it is the first regional map of the southeastern section of North America, and shows the discoveries of Spanish explorers such as Cabeza de Vaca and Hernando de Soto, including a distorted representation of the Mississippi River (named 'Rio del Spirito Santo'). First published in Ortelius' "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Burden 57: "(La Florida) is one of the very few maps printed in the sixteenth century that was based upon original Spanish sources. They were very protective of their knowledge of the Americas, a considerable source of their wealth. The author of this map, Geronimo de Chaves, was the Cosmographer Royal to Philip II of Spain". The map of Florida is considered to be the first to show any interior detail of the present day United States, and was set the standard for mapping the region for the century to come. Latin text on verso with first letter hand colored & decorated with griffins; the number '9' at the lower right. The present map is from the 1592 Latin edition, according to Cartographica Neerlandica (Background for Ortelius Map No. 15):1592L9 (last line, left aligned: feruentum). Image size: 18 x 13". Kitchin, John (d.1588)
Richardi Tottelli. 1592. Hardcover. Rebound with remains of old covers and spine relaid, new spine label bearing gilt titles, some browning and spotting to first and last leaves, minor marginal chipping to title and upper outer corners of first few leaves not affecting text, some old ink underscoring and marginalia, close trimmed at upper margin shaving running heads in second half of volume, 'Retorna Breurum' with separate dated title page but foliation and register continous. Foliation [12] 289 [3], collation: A-A8 *4 A-Oo4. John Kitchin was a legal writer and was admitted to Gray's Inn in 1544 and called to the bar in 1547. Nothing is known of his life before this and he is most famous for his two works, 'Le Court Leete...' and 'Retourna Brevium...' first published in 1580 & 1581 respectively. While their content is drawn from records previously available in manuscript form, Kitchin reconstituted them with exposition under alphabetical headings that gathered together a great deal of learning from the year-books and later case law. His aim in this was to improve the knowledge of law students but he also expressed the desire to see manorial courts run by properly trained lawyers rather than the stewards who were merely the ‘servants’ of the lords and ‘ignorant in the law’. In this he was seeking to bring these courts under a broader and more uniform framework of Royal, as opposed to seigneurial, justice. These two works would continue be republished throughout the 17th century. , 8vo .
