Schlichtingius, Jonas.
Polish nobleman Jonas Schlichtingius (Jonasz Szlichtyng, 1592-1661) commenced writing these New Testament commentaries in 1655, having fled to Cracow at the outbreak of war with Sweden. Although he was taken prisoner at Stargard in 1660 and his work confiscated, the Socinian theologian continued writing "through five bad sieges, in the middle of the fury of wars, and in captivity" (cataloguer's translation, f. **2v), and revising the commentaries until his death the following year. In a brief ad lectorem, the persecuted author declares, "I would not wish the Church held responsible [for these commentaries]. Whatever is said and written is [mine]. . . ." (f. [pi]4r). Schlichtingius left his opus in the care of his sons and two friends, John Preussis and Stanislaüs Lubieniecius: In the preface to this volume, the latter discusses his life and work including his exile from Warsaw in 1647 and imprisonment in 1660. Three copious indices to scriptural sources and references within the text close the collection. Woodcut devices grace the sectional titles; refined tailpieces and large initials against a floriated background decorate the volume throughout. There is scattered Greek type. Provenance: Early inscription "Middeldorpf" on front flyleaf; bookplate and stamp of Rochester Theological Seminary (later the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School). Deaccessioned 2005. Evidence of readership: Sparse contemporary ink annotations; underlining throughout, heavy in quires A-C, K, M, Eee, et alibi. First edition: Published as the seventh and eighth volumes in a series o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Joan BLAEU (1596 – 1673). Amsterdam, circa 1642. Copper engraving with modern outline colour (Very Good, small tears in outer blanak margins not near image), 53 x 61.5 cm (20.9 x 24.2 inches).
- West-up oriented map of Brazil with names of the coast towns. The map is dedicated to Krzysztof Arciszewski (1592 – 1656), a Polish-Lithuanian nobleman, military officer, engineer ,ethnographer, a general of artillery for the Netherlands and Poland and from 1637 to 1646 a vice-governor of Dutch Brazil. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to create magnificent wall maps, large-format charts and eventually terrestrial atlases, all decorated with the finest Dutch Baroque artistry. In particular, thePascaarte van alle … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCAPPUS, Antonius
apud Georgium Ferrarium, Rome 1592 - FIRST EDITION 4to pp (viii) 90 (xxii). Roman letter, title in red and black with woodcut vignette of Saints Peter and Paul, woodcut initials and headpieces, four woodcut portraits of cardinals wearing the scarlet biretta with their arms, appropriately coloured in red, early underlining and marginal pen marks. T.p. foxed (a few small holds on blank), age browning to a few ll, light marginal foxing, small oil splash to blank fore edge of a final ll. Still an attractive copy in C17 vellum over boards, Autograph of J. T. Coleridge, Torrington Square, 1830' on fly. First and only early edition of this curious work of the Bolognese jurist Antonius Scappus, advocate of the Roman curia, dedicated to Pope Gregory XIV. It consists of nine questions and extensive answers, concerning the order and regulations relating to the wearing of the red biretta by cardinals of the Roman Church, giving copious references to Canon Law and historical sources. It appears to be a compilation of works on the somewhat esoteric subject as Responsi 1 - 2 and 4 -7 are described as of uncertain authorship, 3 is by Georgius Diedus, 8 by the fellow advocate Nicholas Angelius and 9 by Scappus himself. The work concludes with an extensive index. The biretta has been justly described as the second least practical form of male headgear, after the academic square or mortar board (which probably share a common ancestor) but it has been worn by clerics from cardinals downwards (generally black other than for cardinals - red, and bishops - violet) since late medieval times and it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pages 592 to 608 describe North and South America, and pages 609 to 612 the islands around South America, New Guinea, Solomon Islands and "Terræ Australis."Morisot (1592-1661), one of the great intellectuals of his day, is known from several erudite publications, the present being the most important. With a library stamp on title-page. Browned and foxed throughout, restored tear in the lower margin of one leaf, and the first three and the last pages nearly loose, otherwise good. Binding rubbed along the extremities.

HOEFNAGEL, J.
- Frankfurt, 1592. (165 x 220mm). 45 of 52 engraved plates. Loose sheets preserved in a plastic portfolio. A large portion of the first state. A beautiful and influential pattern book, one of the principal sources of seventeenth century still life painting. This work was engraved by the teenaged Jacob Hoefnagel (1573-1635), court painter to Emperor Rudolf II of Prague from 1602, under the supervision of his father Joris (1542-1601), last of the great Flemish miniaturists and manuscript illuminators. The title reads: "Archetype and verses by Joris Hoefnagel, his father, are presented, engraved in copper under the guidance of his genius and communicated in friendship to all lovers of the Muses by his son Jacob". Originally it was issued both in portfolio and as a bound volume and published in the imperial city of Frankfurt-am-Main, where Joris moved with his son in 1591 to escape religious persecution as a Calvinist in his native Antwerp. It was aimed to advertise his son's talents although this was the last time Jacob features as an engraver; he was trained and practiced as a painter. The complete work is divided into four parts, each containing an engraved title and twelve engraved plates illustrating natural history specimens, many of these reproduced for the first time. Jacob Hoefnagel drew from his father's small-scale cabinet miniatures and principally from a painted model book (which has not survived) which Joris Hoefnagel used for the illumination of some highly important manuscripts, especially those for Emperor Rudolf II at Prague.Joris Hoefnagel did not observe all h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dion Cassius Cocceianus
Henri Estienne II, Ginevra, 1592.

Today this work is best known for containing the first European illustration of the coffee plant" (Hünersdorff). Alpini writes: "I saw in the garden of Halybey the Turk a tree [...] which is the source of those seeds, very common there, which are called Ban or Bon; from them everyone, Egyptians and Arabs alike, prepare a decoction which they drink instead of wine and which is sold in public bars just as is wine here and they call it 'Caova'. Justinian
Venice: Iuntas, 1592 This is a 5-volume set of the CJC: Vols. 1-3 contain the Digest, or Pandects (the middle section in Vol. 2 called "Infortiatum'); Vol. 4, the first nine books of the Codex or Code of Justinian; Vol. 5, the last three books of the Codex, followed by the Novellas or "Novels," Imperial laws post A.D. 539, various edicts and extravagantes of "other princes," the Consuetudines Feudorum, the Lombard Laws, various other legal commentaries and finally the fourth part of the CJC, the Institutes of Justinian. Text is accompanied by the customary medieval glosses, chiefly those of Accursius and Bartolus. These volumes may not beautify a bookshelf, but are suitable for the student or scholar who delights in the satisfaction of physically handling historical source material. Their condition varies. Leaves mostly lightly browned, some more heavily. Very little foxing. Water stains in parts of Vols. 2, 3, and 4. Worm holes in margins of Vols. 3 and 5, affecting almost no text.
