ROSSI, Teodosio
Rome,: Cesare Capranica, 1591. Rome,: Cesare Capranica,, 1591.. Engraving with etching, dated and signed on the lower part of the plate, laid paper with watermark “lily in the circle”, trimmed to neatline, small woodworms holes skilfully repaired. This fascinating broadside deals with the duration of the sun's semidiurnal arc for places throughout the northern hemisphere. In theory, if one knew one's location, one could by using the table gain an accurate date. To the left and right of the table is a list of months, days (with every third day marked), and signs of the zodiac (with every third day marked). These form four columns, with two to the left and two to the right. The first column begins with 24 September and ends with 22 December; the second 21 March to 22 July; the third 24 September to 22 June; and the fourth 21 March to 22 December. The table is divided into 90 columns in three sections. each column marks a degree of latitude from zero (i.e. the equator) to 90 (the north Pole). each column is subsequently subdivided into hours and minutes of the duration of each semidiurnal arc. to the left and right of the table is a list of cities in the northern hemisphere with their respective degree of latitude. For example, the Maluku Islands (latitude 0 degrees) are situated upon the equator and, according to the table, have a constant semidiurnal arc lasting six hours throughout the year (i.e. the transit of the sun across the sky from sunrise to sunset is 12 hours). ‘Londimu Angl.' (London) is placed upon the 53rd degree of latitude, with the length of the semidiu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Annibale CARRACCI (Bologna 1560 - Roma 1609)
[Click Below for Full Description]

The first printed sea chart of the Bristol Channel, first published in 1588 and this example coming from a Latin edition of 1591, with the plate number (XIX) added lower left. It shows the south coast from Padstow coast east to Aust, marking Barnstable, Ilfrancombe, Minehead and, of course. Bristol. Koeman (IV, p.469) writes: 'Thanks to the unparalleled skill of the engravers, Baptist and Johannes van Doetichum, the original ms. charts by Waghenaer were transformed into the most beautiful maps of the period.' Comino Ventura, 1591. FIRST EDITION. 4to. pp. (xxiv) 415 (i), fold-out table. Italic letter, with Roman and Hebrew, occasional Greek. Printer's device and architectural headpiece with caryatids to t-p, decorated initials and headpieces. Light age browning to first few ll. and intermittent light foxing, oil stain to upper outer corner of pp. 37-57, light water staining to last few gatherings, outer edges a bit dust-soiled, occasional thumb marks. A good, well-margined copy, untrimmed, in old carta rustica, casemark on spine, ex-libris 'Biblioteca Cravenna' and bookplate of Antonia Suardi Ponti to front pastedown. In slipcase. A good, very well-margined copy of the first edition of the first Hebrew grammar in Italian. Guglielmo Franchi (1563-98) was a converted Jew and Vallombrosan monk. Reprinted in 1599 and 1603, Franchi's work provided the first accessible introduction to Hebrew grammar which used the Italian vernacular as a linguistic reference point instead of Latin or even Hebrew. The Reformation had encouraged the development of a new systematic study of Hebrew among Christian scholars as a fundamental philological tool for biblical exegesis based on traditional knowledge derived from the ancient Masorah and Midrash. Franchi's grammar was however addressed to the Jews of Italian communities, very few of whom were by then versed in Latin or could read or speak Hebrew. Whilst rabbis opposed the vernacular translation of ancient Hebrew texts for fear of misinterpretation, anti-Jewish polemicists--often converted Jews like Franchi--published their works in the vernacular t … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Mexican writer Thomas Mercado entered the Dominican order in 1553 and moved to Spain to study economics. Theodore de Bry 1591 - A superb, scarce and important map of the Eastern Seaboard from Cape Lookout to Florida, with Cuba and the Bahamas, published by Theodore de Bry in 1591. The map was drawn by the French artist Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, who'd accompanied French explorer René de Laudonnière to Florida in 1564. Details include information gathered from resident American Indian tribes as well as first-hand observations by Le Moyne. The southernmost lake on the map is labeled Lactus Insula Sarrope and most likely depicts Lake Okeechobee. Further north a significantly larger lake is labeled Lacus Aquae Dulces (Sweet Water Lake) and is shown to be the source of the St. Johns River. Even more further to the north is a lake fed by an enormous waterfall, a possible allusion to native legends of Niagara Falls. This map also shows Tampa Bay and offers a rudimentary treatment of the Florida Keys and the Everglades. Northern Cuba is has good detail, with several major cities, including Havana. The seas are decorated with two sailing ships, a wonderful double-spouted sea monster, a compass rose, and a navigational plotting tool. Armorial crests of France decorate the upper right and left quadrants. The title of the map is framed in a decorative box at the right: Floridae Americae Provinciae Recens & Exactissima Descriptio Auctore Iacobo Le Moyne cui Cognomen de Morgues, Qui Laudonierum, Altera Gallorum in eam Prouinciam Nauigatione comitat'. It was published in Part Two of de Bry's Historia America, Frankfurt, 1591. The image area measures 36.7 x 45.1 cm [14½" x 17¾"]. Condition: … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francisco Aldana
1591. . 1591 - Imprenta de Luis Sanchez y P. Madrigal. Madrid. . 1 Vol. . Tom.I- 1h+102pp.+1h ; Tom.2- 16h+104 pp pp. Octavo. Pergamino de época. Literatura Hispánica (Siglo XVI), Siglo XVI , Vasco-Navarro (Gipuzkoa) .

First and only Italian vernacular edition of an influential Spanish treatise dealing with economics and commerce especially in the American colonies. It was first issued in Salamanca in 1569. The Mexican writer Thomas Mercado entered the Dominican order in 1553 and moved to Spain to study economics. His main interest lies in the trade with the New World, with a specific focus on the destiny of the African slaves transplanted to the Spanish colonies. He was one of the first and most passionate advocates … [Click Below for Full Description]
