MAFFEI Piero

[Click Below for Full Description]

"The Lives of Twelve Caesars" or "De Vita Caesarum" is still considered one of the primary sources on Roman history and discusses important facets of the end of the Roman Republic."Twelve Caesars" covers the lives of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellus, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian, and is the first work to offer insights to some of the lesser-known aspects of these important Roman figures - such as Julius Caesar's struggle with epilepsy. The extent of what is culturally known about Caligula comes almost exclusively from Suetonius - little else was written about the sadistic ruler. Suetonius says of Caligula's reign:"So much for the Emperor; the rest of this history must deal with the Monster."This incredibly rare and valuable 1591 printing of Suetonius features the commentary of Laevinus Torrentius and published by the famous Plantin Press. BODINUS IOANNES
apud Ioannem Wechelum et Petrum Fischerum, 1591. Cm. 18,5, pp. (8) 1221 (83). Cfr. Graesse I, 460; inoltre, per ulteriori approfondimenti bibliografici, cfr. J. Bodin,"I sei libri dello Stato", voll. I-II-III. Torino, Utet, 1964-1998 (a cura di M. Isnardi Parente e D. Quaglioni). BOSSE, Abraham.
Berlin Kat. 4718; Cicognara 820; Kemp, The science of art, pp. 121-125, et passim; for Desargues: DSB IV, pp. 46-51. First edition of a treatise on perspective using the theories and methods of Girard Desargues (1591-1661), lucidly exposed and illustrated by his friend and follower, the engraver Abraham Bosse. It is a continuation of Bosse's Manière universelle de Mr Desargues pour pratiquer la perspective (1648), which was devoted to perspective drawing on a plane surface. Here Desargues's system is applied to angled and curved surfaces and Bosse addresses both theorists as well as practicians. "His Moyen universelle . paid particular attention to the illusionistic projection of perspective onto ceilings and vaults of various configurations" (Kemp). Bosse's own engravings are well-executed and aren't limited to straight theoretical illustrations.Desargues was "a geometer of profoundly original ideas" (DSB). However, his use of original vocabulary and his refusal to resort to Cartesian symbolism made his work difficult to read and his important contributions to geometry were only known to a small audience. In 1642 a series of polemics attacking Desargues caught up in a series of polemics known as the "French perspective wars", which caused him to retreat behind his disciple Abraham Bosse, to whom he entrusted the task of disseminating his methods and defending his work.A couple smudges, but otherwise in very good condition. These seven plays in Dutch verse dramatize the seven Works of Mercy (from Matthew 35:35-46). By the early sixteenth century, every town and many villages of the Low Countries possessed their own "college" or chamber of rhetoric; these were literary confraternities whose origin lay in medieval French-speaking theater groups of Flanders and Brabant, which performed mystery and miracle plays. MERCURIALIS, Hieronymus.
Second edition. See G&M 3343 (first edition of 1590, the first work cited under otology and audiology). The treatise on the ear contained in the second part of this book represents the first "clinical" manual on diseases of the ear. It is combined with a treatise on the diseases of the eye, which is one of the earliest ophthalmological works written by a learned physician (as opposed to unlearned practitioners). The first part of the book is on pharmacology. Stevenson & Guthrie, History of Oto-laryngology, p. 29: "...one of the first exponents of the practice of otology." 16th century engraving of Native Americans after painting by Jacques Le Moyne Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) Voyages to America Frankfurt: 1591 Hand-colored copper plate engravings, after drawings by Jacques Le Moyne 12" x 9"; 23 ½" x 20" framed Theodore de Bry was born in Liege (Belgium) in 1528 to well-to-do Protestant parents. He lived in Liege until the 1560s, when he was forced to flee to Strasborg to avoid the religious persecution. To earn his living in Strasborg, de Bry opened a goldsmith shop and also worked as an engraver. In 1588, de Bry moved to Frankfurt, and it was at this point late in his life that de Bry turned his attention and considerable skill as an engraver toward illustrating and reprinting works concerning the New World of the Americas. De Bry’s landmark volume is a striking visual interpretation on 16th century Native American culture in the Southeast. Jacques Le Moyne traveled to La Florida, as the entire region was known, in 1562 with a French expedition to encourage colonization of the New World. Le Moyne lived in the Huguenot colony at Fort Caroline, compiling an extensive collection of drawings to document the daily life and ritual practices of the local Indians. The colony was destroyed by the Spaniards in 1865, but Le Moyne was able to escape with his drawings. Theodore DeBry completed these stunning engravings in Frankfurt in 1591. The images of the New World convey a strong sense of the mystery and exoticism that characterized early European notions about the New World and it’s native “savages.” These images, including scenes of hunting, farmin … [Click Below for Full Description]

The images of the New World convey a strong sense of the mystery and exoticism that characterized early European notions about the New World and it’s native “savages.” These images, including scenes of hunting, farmin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ibn Sina (Avicenna) / Betti, Antonio Maria.
1591. Folio (301 x 220 mm). (14 [including final blank]), 320 ff. (without the two final leaves cited by Edit 16 but not required by Durling). Title printed in red and black with woodcut device. Modern full vellum on 3 raised bands. Well-produced reissue of the 1560 first edition of this commentary to the 4th Fen of Book 1 of Avicenna's "Qanun", by the Bologna professor of logics and medicine, A. M. Betti (1480-1562). This part, the text of which is provided in full, is dedicated to general therapy, a staple of the compulsory teaching matter at mediaeval and Renaissance medical schools, if not one of the chapters most frequently to engender extensive published commentaries. Indeed, Avicenna's systematic "Canon of Medicine", written in Arabic but widely translated throughout the Middle Ages, remained the basis of medical training in the West until the latter half of the 16th century, when it gradually began to fall out of the syllabus at most European universities, not disappearing entirely until the mid-17th century. It continues in use to this day in parts of the Arab world. Through this encyclopedic work, the author exerted "perhaps a wider influence in the eastern and western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker" (PMM). - A single edge flaw to fol. 263 (remargined by an earlier owner). A good, wide-margined copy showing minimal browning, rebound in contemporary style. Edit 16, CNCE 5658. Durling 401. Adams B 844. Not in BM-STC Italian or Wellcome.
