[Biblia arabico-latina - Evangelium].
1591. Folio (260 x 366 mm). (4), 9-462, (2) pp. Title page printed in red and black, with the Medici arms. With 149 text woodcuts by L. N. Parassole after Antonio Tempesta. Contemporary Italian flexible boards with ms. title to spine. The rare first re-issue, with new preliminary matter only, of the first Gospel printing in the interlinear Arabic and Latin version, prepared at the same time and printed by the same press as the first Arabic-only Gospel. These were the first works ever produced by Ferdinando de' Medici's "Medicea" press, founded by Pope Gregory XIII to spread the word of Christ in the Orient. Supervised by the able scholar Giovambattista Raimondi (1536-1614), its strength lay in oriental, especially Arabic, printing. After Raimondi's death, the press relocated to Florence. - The Arabic text is printed in Robert Granjon's famous large fount, generally considered the first satisfactory Arabic printing type; as all early printed editions of the Arabic Gospels, it is based on the Alexandrian Vulgate (cf. Darlow/M. 1636). The Latin version is by Leonardo Sionita. As issued in 1591, the work began with page 9, without a title page or any preliminary matter at all: "the intended prefatory matter was apparently never published" (Darlow/M.). The 1619 re-issue contains 4 pages of preliminary matter (title page and a note "typographus lectori"); there exist copies with two additional leaves of dedications not present here. Another re-issue, much more common, was released in 1774. - Occasional browning; a good, untrimmed and hence wide-margined copy in its original tempo … [Click Below for Full Description]

De Bry, Theodor.
1591. Folio. Bound in 9 uniform magnificent late 19th century full green morocco bindings with gilt centrepieces, gilt lines to edges of boards and gilt line-frames to inside of boards. All edges gilt and all volumes signed W. Pratt. A lovely set, exquisitely and uniformly bound, magnificently restored in the most gentle and respectful of manners, of the entire original run of De Bry's "Great American Voyages" (supplied by extra variant copies of volumes IV and VIII), the magnificent work that is responsible for shaping the European image of the New World, inventing it in the minds of the masses. Presenting a broad view of European conquests in America and the first contact with the American Indians, De Bry's Great American Voyages represents the first attempt to introduce in Europe - and on a large scale - a pictorial image of the New World as a whole. With it, the first iconography of the American Indian had been created, and most Europeans glimpsed for the first time the wonders of the New World in the illustrations present here. For more than a century, the European view of the New World was dominated by the present work. Theodor de Bry himself published the first six parts (in German and Latin simultaneously), and after his death, his widow and his two sons issued the three following parts. "It appears that they intended to stop there" (Sabin III, 20). However, 17 years later, Johann Theodor decided to publish another three volumes (1619-24). These are not present here. The present set is a mix of the German and Latin volumes (which appeared simultaneously), and as alw … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRUNO NOLANI, JORDANUS. - [INTRODUCING THE ATOMIC THEORY OF SPACE TO THE MODERN WORLD]
Francfurt, Iohannes Wechel & Petrus Fischer, 1591. 12mo. Lovely full calf binding from ab. 1800, with five raised bands and gilt ornamentations to spine. Blindstamped line-borders with gilt corner-pieces to boards. Inner gilt borders and all edges of boards gilt. Marbled end-papers. Old book-plate to inside of front board and a small stamp to title-page (from the Beltrame-library). A bit of wear to extremities and leather at hinges worn, otherwise very nice. Apart from a slightly dusty title-page, only minimal browning or spotting internally. A very nice copy indeed. Some leaves slightly shaved at top, just touching a few headers. With numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. (8), 217, (3) pp. ¶ The extremely scarce first edition of one of Bruno's main works, one of his key cosmological texts, being the earliest and most important of his three long Latin poems with prose accompaniment and thus one of the most influential works of the Renaissance. It is in this foundational work that "the greatest thinker in Italy during the sixteenth century" (Paterson) defines the triple minimum, which consists in the monad (being the basis of metaphysics), the mathematical point (being the basis of geometry), and the atom (being the basis of physics) and thus presents the basis for his theory of nature and the universe. It contains much of the author's ripest thought and his first description of his seminal doctrine of the minimum, by which he was the first Western thinker (since Plato) to introduce the atomistic theory of space. Annibale CARRACCI (Bologna 1560 - Roma 1609)
The present work provided by far the most detailed knowledge of the African interior to date, as reflected both in its ethnographic text and illustrations and its highly important maps, which “completely chang[ed] the traditional Ptolemaic concept” of the Dark Continent, recording a level of knowledge of the interior which would not be surpassed until the expeditions of Stanley et al. The Italian adventurer Pigafetta encountered Odoardo Lopes during his stay in Rome from 1588-9, when Lopes was presenting a report of his travels to the Pope. Pigafetta prepared the present work in Italian as a faithful transcription of Lopes’ account, which chronicles his remarkable travels through the Kongo and down to Angola – prob … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIBBIA ARABIC
Rome, in typographia Medicea, MDXCI (1591), - in-folio, pp. 9-462, (1 contenente avviso e colophon); leg. leggermente posteriore p. perg. molle, tit. ms. al dorso (rifatto ). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

STC 23078; ESTC S111266; Pforzheimer 968. ONCE ACCEPTED AS BEING THE EARLIEST REFERENCE TO SHAKESPEARE. The following lines, published in Shakespeare's 28th year, form a part of a lamentation over perversions of public taste: "All these, and all that els the Comick Stage.... Are now despized and made a laughing game. And he the man whom nature self had made To mock herself, and truth to imitate With kindly counter under mimick shade, Our pleasant Willy, ah, is dead of late: With whom all joy and jolly merriment Is also dreaded and in dolour drent." --"The Teares of the Muses" p.8 The reference was once accepted to be the earliest notice by name of the immortal bard. It is now believed that "Willy" is Spenser's friend Sidney. GORLAEUS (VAN GOORLE, VAN GOOIRLE), David.
First edition, extremely rare, of one of the earliest modern works on atomism. "Gorlaeus is counted among the founders of modern atomism, which he proposed as an alternative to Aristotelian matter theory. Because of his notion of atomic compounds, he is also regarded as a contributor to the evolution of chemistry" (DSB). "When David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) passed away at 21 years of age, he left behind two highly innovative manuscripts. Once they were published [as the present work, and as Idea physicae (1610), his work had a remarkable impact on the evolution of seventeenth-century thought. However, as his identity was unknown, divergent interpretations of their meaning quickly sprang up. Seventeenth-century readers understood him as an anti-Aristotelian thinker and as a precursor of Descartes. Twentieth-century historians depicted him as an atomist, natural scientist and even as a chemist. And yet, when Gorlaeus died, he was a beginning student in theology. His thought must in fact be placed at the intersection between philosophy, the nascent natural sciences, and theology" (Lüthy). This is a very rare book. In his review of Lüthy's book in 2012, Henri Krop wrote: "until now Gorlaeus's life and ideas have remained basically unknown because both his elaborate Exercitationes philosophicae and his Idea physicae are extremely rare and copies were unavailable in Dutch public libraries. (However since 1986 the libraries of both Leiden and Leeuwarden have acquired copies of the former.)"
