- Small typographical vignette on title page. Woodcut initials. (8), 372 ll. 8°, contemporary limp vellum (two small holes of about 1.5 x 1 cm. along upper joint, near head of spine and a bit below center; other minor binding wear; lacks rear free endleaf), vertical calligraphic manuscript author's name on spine, fore-edge cover extensions, leather thongs present, text-block edges sprinkled red. Light toning. Small wormhole in front free endleaf, blank portion of title page and blank margin of following leaf, never affecting text. Worm trace in lower outer margins of leaves 245-68, occasionally just touching a letter of text, but never affecting legibility. Overall in good to very good condition. Engraved pictorial bookplate of Victor d'Avila Perez. Old ink signature of Dom Francisco Lobo on front free endleaf recto, and signed in ink in the same hand on title page D. Francisco Lobo da Silveira. ---- Apparently the third edition of this second part of a classic work, one of the best-selling Portuguese books of the sixteenth century and one of the most important books ever written in Portuguese. Bell describes the @Imagem at length: "It is impossible to read a page of these dialogues and not be struck by the extraordinary fascination of their style. It is concise and direct without ever losing its harmony. Perhaps its best testimonial is that its magic survives the innumerable quotations ? The work contains much ingenious thought, charming descriptions, and elaborate similes ?" (p. 237). Completed in the same year that saw the publication of the @Lusiadas, the @Imagem is the culmination of the humanistic movement in Portugal, and brilliantly combines classical learning and Renaissance erudition with the medieval Christian tradition. The first part was published originally in 1563. There were editions of 1565, 1567, 1572, and a number of others. The second part was first published in 1572; a revised edition appeared in 1575. The first part saw a number of subsequent editions in the sixteenth century, and the second part appeared at least once more, in 1593. The two parts were published for the first time in a single volume in 1681, and there was an 1843 edition of the two parts in three volumes. The work was translated into Spanish, French, Italian, and Latin at relatively early dates, and went through various editions in each of these languages. It is still reprinted from time to time in Portugal. All the sixteenth-century editions are rare. Fr. Heitor Pinto (1528?-1584?) was one of the three greatest Portuguese mystic writers of the sixteenth century - perhaps @the greatest, ranking with D. Fr. Amadaor Arraiz and Fr. Thomé de Jesus. Born in all probability at Covilhã, he professed at the Convento dos Jerónimos at Belém in 1543 and received his doctorate in theology from Siguença. Because of his proficiency in oriental languages and his knowledge of the Bible (he wrote learned commentaries on several books of the Bible), a Chair of Holy Scripture was created for him at Coimbra in 1576. A strong supporter of the Prior of Crato, Pinto was requested by King Philip to attend the Court in Madrid, was prevented from teaching, and was sent to the monastery of Silla near Toledo. Philip excluded him from the amnesty granted in 1581 and Pinto died in exile, some say poisoned on orders from the Spanish king.@Provenance: José António Francisco Lobo da Silveira Queresma, (1698-1773) was 1.º marquês de Alvito, 10.º barão de Alvito and 3.º conde de Oriola. If the ownership signatures are not his, they may be by one of his relatives. Victor Marat d'Avila Perez was a great bibliophile whose library was one of the dozen or so most important ever sold at auction in Portugal. The catalogue contains 8,962 lots, sold in six parts by Arnaldo Henriques de Oliveira, probably with a total of 30 sessions, the first part beginning 30 October 1939, with the final part beginning 29 April 1940.---- Innocêncio III, 175-6 (without collation).         [The Great American Voyages]. Vols. 1-9 plus variant duplicate volumes of IV and VIII, in all 11 volumes, bound in 9. Mixed editions/issues, mixed German and Latin text.

Frankfurt/Oppenheim, 1591-1625.. Folio. Bound in 9 uniform magnificent late 19th century full green morocco bindings with gilt centrepieces, gilt lines to edges of boards and gilt line-frames to inside of boards. All edges gilt and all volumes signed W. Pratt.. A lovely set, exquisitely and uniformly bound, magnificently restored in the most gentle and respectful of manners, of the entire original run of De Bry's "Great American Voyages" (supplied by extra variant copies of volumes IV and VIII), the magnificent work that is responsible for shaping the European image of the New World, inventing it in the minds of the masses. Presenting a broad view of European conquests in America and the first contact with the American Indians, De Bry's Great American Voyages represents the first attempt to introduce in Europe - and on a large scale - a pictorial image of the New World as a whole. With it, the first iconography of the American Indian had been created, and most Europeans glimpsed for the first time the wonders of the New World in the illustrations present here. For more than a century, the European view of the New World was dominated by the present work. Theodor de Bry himself published the first six parts (in German and Latin simultaneously), and after his death, his widow and his two sons issued the three following parts. "It appears that they intended to stop there" (Sabin III, 20). However, 17 years later, Johann Theodor decided to publish another three volumes (1619-24). These are not present here. The present set is a mix of the German and Latin volumes (which appeared simultaneously), and as always in a mix of editions and issues. Due to the great scarcity as well as the complex bibliographical nature of "The Great American Voyages", no sets of this great work are said to be alike. They are always made up of different languages, editions, and issues, and there is said to be no such thing as a "complete set". Copies of sets are almost always in very poor condition. - With the book plate of John Jay Paul (dated 1913 and 1914) to each volume, and each volume with a tipped-in manuscript note describing issue points and/or the main restoration work (one dated 1919). - Gentle washing, pressing, and a few restorations; some maps neatly mounted, 2 maps supplied in facsimile (being the map in both copies of vol. VIII, which is not always present and thus technically not lacking), and a few leaves supposedly supplied from other copies. Occasional slight cropping. All in all a very handsome and well preserved.

Zu Wittenberg gehalten. 36 Bl„tter; Wittenberg, M. Simon Gr"nenberg 1593; Zwei seltene und kulturgeschichtlich wichtige Drucke des 16. Jahrhundert. 0,000 gr.

DELL'ARTE HISTORICA DI AGOSTINO MASCARDI. Trattati cinque.

Prima edizione, dedicata a Francesco Brignole. Cm.23,7x16,2. Pg.(12), 676, (32). Sobria legatura in piena pergamena rigida. Ex libris nobiliare all'antiporta. L'opera principale, in edizione originale, dello storico ligure Agostino Mascardi (Sarzana, 1591 - 1640), rispettivamente figlio e nipote dei giureconsulti Alderano e Giuseppe.

[16], 783 (i.e., 795), [1]; [160] pp. Illustrated with large woodcut historiated initials at the beginning of each chapter, ornamental head- and tailpieces, plus the printer's woodcut device on title-page and colophon (f. Ddd4v). 4to., 203 x 147 mm, bound by Le Gascon in contemporary French blonde calf, double-ruled in gilt, framing a central armorial device with the monogram of Antoine de Sève at corners of inner panel on each board and in spine compartments (interlacing A.D.S.E.V.; Olivier 683, fer 2 and 3); spine with raised bands and title gilt in second compartment of six, the remaining five with same monogram; endpapers and fly-leaves ruled in red, contemporary document in secretary hand used as binder's waste visible (illegible) beneath endpapers; edges speckled red. In Parma: Appresso Erasmo Viotto, 1591. |~||~||~||~| A history of the city and river of Parma, including regions in the surrounding Emilia Romagna. Angeli's history contains a plethora of detailed information on the buildings, sites, the Bapistry, the Ducal palace of Ottavio Farnese by Vignola, and accounts of the ruling noble families San Vitali, Pallavicino, Rossa, Torella, and Terza. Angeli dedicated his book to the Prince of Parma, Don Ranuccio Farnese. Bonaventura Angeli (ca. 1525-1592) Italian writer from Ferrara, along with his friend Gianbattista Pigna, formed an academy for the cultivation of literature called the Parthian Academy. For some time he was in the employ of the Dukes of Ferrara. His Historia della Citta di Parma is the most important of many works written by Angeli. At the time little was recorded of the city of Parma, of the history of the Parma river, or of the surrounding Emilia-Romagna region. Angeli consulted whatever archives he could locate in Parma and composed the book in eight chapters with several digressions on a general history of Italy. He supplied an exhaustive index of 160 pages at the end, printed in double columns. This volume was in the library of Philippe Desportes (1546-1606), the French courtier poet who was famous for composing villanelles, elegies and sonnets, many copied by English Elizabethan poets. Desportes was one of the major poets competing with Pierre de Ronsard for the favor of the Duke of Anjou. He worked under the patronage of King Henry III, for whom Desportes wrote poems upon royal request. He was granted the abbey of Tiron as a royal benefice for literary services rendered. The other early owner of this volume was Antoine de Sève (d. 1662), a counselor and chaplain to Louis XIV, prior at Champdieu, and Abbey of l'Isle-en-Barrois. His books, forming an important library of more than six thousand volumes on the sciences, were mainly bound by Antoine Ruette and Le Gascon. One of the tools found in this binding was used by de Sève only during his time at Champdieu. Binding extremities repaired. Trimmed close at upper margin near but not touching headline, two pages with small repair obscuring a few words of text, minor browning or foxing in a few quires, a beautiful book overall in an absolutely sumptuous binding. PROVENANCE: Philippe Desportes, with his ink inscription on title-page; Antoine de Sève, with his coat-of-arms and monogram on binding, from his famous library, see above. Adams 1095 (different collation). Brunet I, 287. Affo, Memorie degli Scrittori e Letterati Parmigiani IV, 209-240. Barotti, Memorie Istoriche di Letterati Ferraresi II, 187-194. Rare, unrecorded broadside showing the family tree of the reigning sultan of Turkey Amurath III (1548-95) and his eleven ancestors, thus covering 12 generations beginning with sultan Osman I (1259-1326). Two shields display the Sultan's coat of arms and attributes (turban, sword, bow and arrows, rife and tools). Each sultan has his own engraved portrait; letterpress title above and two columns of letterpress text at the sides: information about the sultans to the left, and information about their brothers (29 in all) at the right. The Austrian scholar Michael Eyzinger (Baron Aitzing, ca. 1530-98) wrote several pamphlets on contemporary historical events, parts of which were published by Gottfried van Kempen (cf. Göllner 1594). He is considered a pioneer of newspaper journalism, as well as of genealogy. - Restored copy; formerly mounted with vague gluestains on verso, skilfully remargined and 2 large repaired horizontal tears (slight loss of image and text).

Icones Stirpium seu Plantarum tam Exoticarum, quam indigenarum, in gratiam rei herbariae studiosorum in duas partes digestae. Cum septem linguarum indicibus...

Antverpiae, ex officina Plantiniana, 1591. Oblong-4to (175 x 220mm). 2 volumes in one. pp. (8), 816; 280, (54), with woodcut printer's device on title and 2176 woodcuts in the text, two to a page. Contemporary vellum, spine with gilt ornaments and gilt lettered label (label damaged). A reissue of the 1581 edition which had a slightly different title 'Plantarum seu stirpium icones'. A fine copy of this gallery of the Plantin woodcuts, intended as an indexed iconography, with Latin, Flemish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and English names given in the index. This suite of woodcuts reappears, with some additions, in the Johnston edition of Gerarde's 'Herball', 1633. The 'Icones' was meant to be used as a visual supplement to Lobel's 'Plantarum seu stirpium historia' of 1576 (which contained only 273 woodcuts) and its Flemish translation, the 'Kruydtboeck', printed by Plantin in 1581. There are cross references above each plant to these editions. Plantin commissioned woodblocks for the 'Icones' in 1580 and these were also used in other botanical publications of the Plantin press. The preliminary 'Elenchus plantarum fere congenerum' in which the plants are arranged according to their affinities, was cited by Linnaeus throughout his 'Species plantarum' of 1753 and thus contributed to the birth of modern binomial taxonomy. //Matthias de l'Obel or Lobel (Lille 1538 - Highgate 1611) studied under Rondelet at Montpellier (who bequeathed him his manuscripts) and practiced medicine both in the Netherlands and England. He was appointed physician to William, the Silent but settled in England after his patron's assassination in 1584, where he made a valuable study of British flora, becoming botanist to King James I (DSB VIII pp. 435-6). He is commemorated by the genus 'Lobelius'. One leaf with small hole.         16th century engraving of Native Americans after painting by Jacques Le Moyne

Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) 1591 - 16th century engraving of Native Americans after painting by Jacques Le Moyne Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) Voyages to America Frankfurt: 1591 Hand-colored copper plate engravings, after drawings by Jacques Le Moyne 12" x 9"; 23 ½" x 20" framed Theodore de Bry was born in Liege (Belgium) in 1528 to well-to-do Protestant parents. He lived in Liege until the 1560s, when he was forced to flee to Strasborg to avoid the religious persecution. To earn his living in Strasborg, de Bry opened a goldsmith shop and also worked as an engraver. In 1588, de Bry moved to Frankfurt, and it was at this point late in his life that de Bry turned his attention and considerable skill as an engraver toward illustrating and reprinting works concerning the New World of the Americas. De Bry’s landmark volume is a striking visual interpretation on 16th century Native American culture in the Southeast. Jacques Le Moyne traveled to La Florida, as the entire region was known, in 1562 with a French expedition to encourage colonization of the New World. Le Moyne lived in the Huguenot colony at Fort Caroline, compiling an extensive collection of drawings to document the daily life and ritual practices of the local Indians. The colony was destroyed by the Spaniards in 1865, but Le Moyne was able to escape with his drawings. Theodore DeBry completed these stunning engravings in Frankfurt in 1591. The images of the New World convey a strong sense of the mystery and exoticism that characterized early European notions about the New World and it’s native “savages.” These images, including scenes of hunting, farming and warfare as well as cannibalism and ritual mutilation, are still arresting and strange to a modern viewer. One can only imagine the impact of these scenes in 16th century Germany. After de Bry’s death in 1598, his publishing business in Frankfort continued to be run by his son-in-law Mathias Merian.
