COUTO, DIOGO DO.
Boxer, The tragic history of the sea 1589-1622; Innocencio II, p. 155; G.P. Rouffae, "Encyclopaedie-artikelen" in: Bijdragen tot de taal-, land- en volkenkunde LXXXVI, pp. 196-201. Rare first edition of the only account of the life of Paulo de Lima Pereira (1538-1589), leader of the Portuguese campaign in India. It was originally written in 1611 by the captain's friend, the historian Diogo do Couto (ca. 1542-1616), but only published here more than 150 years later for the first time, with a foreword by the celebrated Portuguese bibliographer Diogo Barbosa Machado. The section on the shipwreck and death of Paulo de lima was taken from the manuscript and published in Brito's História trágico-maritima (1729-1736). It includes the attack against the Malabar pirate Khunali and the destruction of Johor Lama, Singapore. Couto (1542-1616) impressed the Lisbon court in general and King João's brother Luis of Portugal in particular at an early age. Under Luis's patronage he studied at the Jesuit college and elsewhere. Luis died in 1555, however, and Couto set off for Portuguese India as a soldier in 1556. Aside from a visit to Portugal in 1569-1571, he was to remain in Asia for the rest of his life, staying mostly at Goa, but also serving the military in the Red Sea and the Gulf. One quire heavily browned, some other leaves slightly browned, one leaf with a tear, wormholes throughout the foot margin, and the spine slightly rubbed and with a few wormholes. A good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

It contains the fifteen books with very full scholia, and the addition of a sixteenth, De solidorum regularium comparatione. It was reprinted at Rome in 1589 in the same form, and in folio at Cologne in 1591."-Thomas-Stanford, p. 11. 1589.
Ouvrages divers]. Librairie de L. Hachette et Cie. Paris. 1853.
[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, rare. Under the title, with the black pen handwritten: Naughty speech of a leaguer. Binding to the bradel half percaline taupe late nineteenth. Smooth back with golden title and date. Antonio TEMPESTA (Firenze 1555 - Roma 1630)
Molto rara. Bibliografia: Bartsch 557. The two male statues of the square of Quirinale depict the Dioscuri, holding wild horses by the reins; they were probably part of the antique temple of Serapide built by Caracalla on the hill in 217 b.C.. Under Sixtus V the statues have been placed on the new square after a long period of restauration ended in 1585. Tempesta's work has been realized to publicize the new placement before the Pope's residence. It has been printed by Nicolas van Aelst, a Belgian printer who had moved to Rome in the XVI century with many others; they were all attracted by the flourishing printing business that was developping in the city. Agostino CARRACCI (Bologna 1557 - Parma 1602)
Engraving, about 1589-95, signed on plate at bottom left ( second state only). Example in the rare first state of two, before letters. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to the copperplate, restoration carried out perfectly in the white top, traces of glue on verso, otherwise in excellent condition. De Grazia writes "The engraving has always … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUCLID
Bartolomeo Grasso, Roma, 1589. Two volumes. Second edition of Clavius’s main work, his rare and influential edition of Euclid. Clavius (1538-1612), was called by his contemporaries “the Euclid of the sixteenth century”, a Jesuit mathematician who gave the Gregorian Calendar of New Style its present form and made all the calculations necessary for its verification. His edition contains the fifteen books with very full scholia, and the addition of a sixteenth, De solidorum regularium comparatione. It was first printed at Rome in 1574 in the same form, and in folio at Cologne in 1591. [Clavius’s] “Elements, which is not a translation, contains a vast quantity of notes collected from previous commentators and editors, as well as some good criticisms and elucidations of his own. Among other things, Clavius made a new attempt at proving ‘the postulate of the parallels.’In a scholion, to the twelfth proposition of the ninth book of Euclid, Clavius objects to Cardanus’ claim to originality in employing a method that derives a proposition by assuming the contradictory of the proposition to be proved. According to Clavius, Cardanus was anticipated in this method by Euclid and by Theodosius of Bithynia in the twelfth proposition of the first book of his Sphaericorum.”-D.S.B., III, p. 311. Very rare to find complete in two volumes. Full 18th century vellum binding. Pictorial Title-page with the engraved figures of Archimedes and Euclides; many geometric illustrations within the text.
