Der zweite Band (Andere Theil) der von Johannes Huser herausgegebenen Ausgabe der Werkes des Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, genannt Paraclsus. - VD 16, P 367. Sudhoff 217. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna (1586-1656) was Swedish councillor and treasurer of the realm, married to Anna Gustafsdotter Banér (1585-1656). The German school of thinking Paracelcism, inspired by the mysticism and natural philosophy of Paracelsus, was established during the latter part of the 16th century and became important also in Sweden. The development of Swedish Paracelcism until the middle of the 17th century has been studied by Sten Lindroth in his thesis "Paracelsismen i Sverige till 1600-talets mitt" (1943). [Click Below for Full Description]

Doni Anton Francesco
appresso i Gioliti, 1589. In-8° (201x146mm), pp. 56, legatura novecentesca in p. pergamena rigida con unghie eseguita a imitazione delle legature antiche. Titolo in oro su tassello in pelle rossa al dorso. [Click Below for Full Description]

BROUWER, Hendrik.
Cordier, Japonica, cols. 354-355; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 372; Muller, America 358 ("of the highest interest"); Sabin 8427; Tiele, Bibl. 198 & 1183; Tiele, Mém. 204; STCN (7 copies). Rare first edition of the account of the charting voyage by Maerten Gerritsz. Vries (1589-1646) to the North of Japan, together with the popular account of a Dutch West India Company voyage to Chile under Hendrik Brouwer (1581-1643). Another edition was published by Jan Jacobsz. Bouman circa 1650/60, followed by two editions in French of Vries's part only in 1673 and 1732. An edition based on the original manuscript of Vries's account was published in 1858 by Frederik Muller.Brouwer, one of the directors of the Dutch West India Company, acted as the commander of a fleet of six ships, specially sent to the western coast of South America to activate the trade between the Dutch and the natives, who were at the time in bad humor with the Spaniards. During this voyage, which resulted in the first place in a better knowledge of that coast, Brouwer died at Chiloe and was buried at Valdivia in August 1643. After his death the command fell to Elias Herckmans, who occupied an important post in Brazil. Appended to that journal is the very important account of a charting voyage to Japan. That same year (1643) Maerten Gerritsz. Vries, employed by the Dutch East India Company, was ordered to explore and chart the northernmost islands of Japan. He visited Hokkaido (Yezo) and Sakhalin, discovered the islands Iturup and Urup and gave his name to the strait between those islands. La Pérouse considered him one … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIUS, Abraham
Antwerp: Plantin, 1589. Engraved map, 435 x 560 mm., original hand-colouring, small tear with old paper repair to original central fold, some toning, a few marks and stains, but in very good condition; framed. The first printed map devoted to the Pacific. A very good copy, with original hand-colouring, of the first printed map to be devoted solely to the Pacific. The map includes a vast southern continent, which stretches from a peak right below New Guinea all the way to connect with the southern shores of the Straits of Magellan. The map has many firsts: it is the first to name North and South America separately, and the first to shift the islands of New Guinea and Japan away from the American coast, thus stretching the Pacific into a more realistic shape. The map is also particularly good regarding Spanish America, with interesting details of the entire west coast of South America, Central America, California, and stretching north towards what is now Alaska. The width of America has been considerably corrected, so that it is now quite narrow across the Tropic of Capricorn; as Wagner points out, this has the effect of moving the peninsula of California, correctly, to the east. Ortelius used Spanish and Portuguese manuscript maps to correct many contemporary misconceptions about the Americas, although it remains unclear what his sources were for some of the other corrections. The absence of inland detail such as topographic features and the names of towns may reflect the Flemish cartographer's reliance upon portolan charts for inspiration. Yet it is rich in coastal deta … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AN AGENT OF THE FRENCH EMBASSY]
London, 1589. London, 1589. Single leaf of paper. Good. Single leaf of paper. Single leaf of paper, 40 lines in a humanistic cursive hand, single column, brown ink, a little damp-stained and chipped at one edge, else good, 290 ×170 mm (255 × 160 mm). Letter written by a diplomatic agent to the French ambassador concerning the writer';s conversations with Elizabeth I giving her thoughts on ‘le mariage';.Offered is a letter written in French by a diplomatic agent in London, yet to be identified, to the French ambassador (or another figure in the French embassy), referring to the writer';s conversations with Elizabeth I, representing her thoughts on ‘le mariage';. It is dated 15 August, although the year is uncertain, but clearly in the 1580s. It appears that the writer was involved in negotiations with the English court at the very highest levels. He begins his letter by stating that he has written already to the King, le ‘Roy Vre Maitre';, concerning negotiations with the Queen on a number of subjects, the most important of which was a proposition of marriage. While the letter was clearly of high diplomatic importance, it appears that no cipher was used, because the carrier was deemed entirely trustworthy: ‘Je ne vous escris poinnt au shifre car je scay que le porteur est fort seur.'; ‘Le mariage'; in question would appear to be between a young couple, but they, like the writer of the present letter, remain unknown. Public figures who are mentioned in the letter include Paul Choart, Monsieur de Buzanval, described as ‘adiant du Roy de Nav … [Click Below for Full Description]
