Gerard MERCATOR (Kremer) (1512 - 1594)
Rarissima edizione. First published in 1589, this striking map comes from Barentsz's "Descriptio Maris Mediterranei, per tabula hydographics & geographicas, . . .", published by Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1654. This is a rare variant edition. The atlas includes re-issues of Barentsz's 10 maps (first included in "Caertboeck vande Middelandtsche Zee", 1595) of the Mediterranean, with Jansson having completely changed the title and reworked the decorative embellishments, removing many of the great images originally added by Barentsz. Copperplate, original outline colour, in very good conditions. Rare edition, without text on verso. Amsterdam Amsterdam Zacharakis C. G. MAFFEI, Giovanni Pietro.
Cologne: Birckmann, 1589. Folio, with a large folding map; in contemporary vellum. Very early account of East Asia, with much information on China and Japan and the first published European description of the tea plant. This copy contains the large folding world map - based on the famous 1570 Ortelius - that does not ordinarily belong to this first Cologne edition. Comprising 16 continuously paginated parts principally compiled from the correspondence of Jesuit missionaries in the Far East, the Historiarum Indicarum was a popular and well-received account published at a high point in European curiosity about Asia. The sixth and twelfth parts are descriptions of China and Japan respectively. They rely heavily on the writings of Alessandro Valignano, a Jesuit pioneer widely credited with introducing Catholicism to Japan and responsible for Matteo Ricci's appointment on the China mission. This is a notably early and important work on China which - much like Mendoza's Historia of 1586 - describes the culture, products, trade and Imperial bureaucracy of China for a very curious European audience. It contains the first published account of the tea plant, a commodity that was to influence China's contact with the West for centuries to come. First published in Florence in 1588, the book was re-printed across Europe over the coming decade. This is an example of the first Cologne edition of 1589, this copy being remarkable for containing the map usually associated with the later Cologne edition of 1593: 'This map is occasionally found in copies of Birckmann's 1589 folio edition of Ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

CALENDRIER DES BERGERS
Paris, Nicolas Bonfons, [1589]. Bindings warn at extremities and stained (particularly vol. 3 & 6), parts of the parchment missing on top of the spine and upper corners of the same volumes. Scattered waterstains (please contract for the description of all defects). Not in the best conditions but complete, rare, and essential Paracelsus' collected works edited by Johannes Huser. "Regarding the transmission of Paracelsus's writings, the autographs of which are completely lost, it was very fortunate, that Johannes Huser (c1545-1597/1604) had at an early stage collected a great number of autographs and copies of them. So he was able to bring out the complete medical and natural philosophic works of Paracelsus, which appeared in ten volumes in Basle from 1589 to 1591. He prepared a further volume with the surgical writings, but because there were competing editions in Basle, this tome was not to be published until 1605 in Strasbourg, which was after his death. Huser had exercised great care in editing the original wording, so we can assume that we have a very reliable text." (Huser Edition of Paracelsus at Zurich Paracelsus Project)l. Joachim of Fiore
Venice: Apud Hieronymum Porrum. Good with no dust jacket. 1589. First Edition. Vellum. Bound in full period vellum leather, in good antiquarian condition, in Latin and Italian, with 34 copper plate full page engraved plates, as well as an engraved title page and woodcut engraved initials and head and tail pieces. It measures 8 ¼? by 6, 140 unnumbered pages, complete, with signatures: a-d4 A-N4 O² (verso of a1 is blank), no final blank, consistent with bibliographies. One page with a small tear, title page with an old ownership inscription, mostly obscured ?ab...cancellor?; first blank with some notes in an early Renaissance hand. Engravings are all clear and sharply printed. The vellum leather is smooth, with some chips at edges, spine is divided into five panels by four raised bands, with faded ink title lettering in one panel, evidence of some early vellum repair, some chipping to spine but quite handsome. The series of engravings here are quite important beyond their strange prophetic value; they are by the acclaimed Renaissance Italian engraver and publisher Girolamo Porro, known for fine engravings and maps, he also published, with Thomoso Porcacchito L?Isole Piu famose del Mondo as well as maps by Ptolemy. Here, in this first edition of Joachim?s Vaticinia prophecies, we have beautiful examples of this master engraver?s art. The purported author of these cryptic and much discussed prophecies, Joachim of Fiore (c.1132?1202), was an Italian Cistercian monk and a mystic philosopher who believed that the advent of the Antichrist and a violent end of the age were imminen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ramus, Logik - (Temple, William):
Frankfurt, Wechel, 1589. - 8°. 111 pp., with printer s device on the title Newer half-calf with marbled boards "VD 16 T 323. Uncommon German edition, published first in London in 1580. The logician William Temple (1555?1627) was the fourth Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. He was an early supporter of the renewed, anti-aristotelian logic as presented by Pierre la Ramée. "In 1580 he replied in print to an attack on Ramus's position by Everard Digby. Adopting the pseudonym "Franciscus Mildapettus of Navarre" (Ramus had studied in youth at the Parisian Collège de Navarre), he issued a tract against Digby. The work was dedicated to Philip Howard, 1st Earl of Arundel, whose acquaintance Temple had made while the earl was studying at Cambridge. Digby replied with great heat next year, and Temple retorted with a volume published under his own name. This he again dedicated to his patron the Earl of Arundel, and he announced his identity with Mildapettus. Temple's contributions to the controversy attracted notice abroad, and this volume was reissued at Frankfort in 1584 (in fact: 1589)" (Wikipedia). " "- Some browning due to the quality of the paper, little underlining in pencil, otherwise well preserved. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Each title within an elaborate woodcut pictorial border, two full-page engravings, & numerous woodcuts & maps in the text, woodcut initials and head- & tailpieces. First title printed in red & black. 6 p.l., 449, [15] pp.; 4 p.l., 205, [6] pp. Two vols. in one. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (binding a little soiled, light browning throughout as is always the case). Dresden: "durchaus auff Schreibpappir gedruckt," 1589-90. First edition, and a fine copy, of this early mining book, splendidly printed on special paper ("Schreibpappir"). "This work is of great importance in connexion with the early history of mining in Saxony."-Zeitlinger, 2nd Supp., 13976. Albinus's book also contains valuable information on the output of gold and silver along with details on the magnet-stone, wolfram, and many other metals. The present book contains much original information on the life and works of Agricola and is also of great significance for the early history of European porcelain manufacturing. For more on this see W. Prandtl, "Zur Vorgeschichte des Meissner Porzellans" in Chymia, Vol. IV (1953). Albinus (1534-98), was professor of poetry and mathematics at the University of Wittenberg and historiographer to the Electorate of Saxony. Very nice copy. Foot of spine a little defective. Bookplate of Hans Joachim Höupler. Attractive copies of this book are scarce. ❧ Ferchl, p. 6-"die sehr viel hütten-chemische Nachrichten enthält. Quelle über das Leben Georg Agricolas." Hoover 43.
