PORTA, Giambattista della
Neapoli, Apud Horatium Saluianum. D. D. LXXXVIIII. [1589]. 1589 Magiae Naturalis by Porta Magic Alchemy Poison Gunpowder Occult Witches EXCEEDINGLY RARE & IMPORTANT Folio Masterpiece One of the most impressive occult works on natural magic! “Magiae Naturalis” by Giambattista della Porta covers a variety of subjects including occult philosophy, astrology, alchemy, mathematics, and meteorology. It was one of the first works of ‘popular science’ and indeed was popular – it was continually reprinted in various languages through the mid-17th-century! This 1589 Naples edition is incredibly important in that it added new observations that were not previous published. While the earlier editions focused more on ancient world learning of that of Pliny, this edition includes “twenty books” on geology, optics, poison, cooking, metallurgy, magnets, cosmetics and perfume, gunpowder, and invisible writing! In the preface of the 1658 English edition, Porta states, “A certain Frenchman in his Book called ‘Daemonomania,’ Tearms me a Magician, a Conjurer, and thinks this Book of mine, long since Printed, worthy to be burnt, because I have written the Fairies Oyntment, which I set forth oreily in detestation of the frauds of Divels and Witches; That which comes by Nature is abused by their superstition, which I borrowed from the Books of the most commendable Divines I pas over other men of the same temper, who affirm that I a Witch and a Conjurer, whereas I never write here nor elsewhere, what is not contained within the bounds of Nature.” Porta describes that he is no magician, however, he do … [Click Below for Full Description]

Opera rarissima." "Engraving, circa 1589, without signature. Frtom the very rare ""Diversarum nationum habitus centum et quattuor inconibus inaere incisis diligenter expressi, item ordines duo preocesionum, unus Summi Pontificis, alter Sereniss. Principis Venetiarum, opera Petri Bertelli"" published in Padua by Alciato Alciati & Pietro Bertelli, 1589 - 91. A very fine costume work: most of the plates show a single person (or small groups of people) in typical local and professional costume, with identifiying captions. Some plates are of ethnological interest, such as one of a Congolese gentleman being carried about in a hammock. Others depict curious scenes: Venetians fighting for show and in earnest, St Mark's Square and boats on the Canal Grande (with the Rialto Bridge), as well as games (soccer, as well as a vicious entertainment that involves battering a cat to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gerard MERCATOR (Kremer) (1512 - 1594)
Rarissima edizione. First published in 1589, this striking map comes from Barentsz's "Descriptio Maris Mediterranei, per tabula hydographics & geographicas, . . .", published by Janssonius in Amsterdam in 1654. This is a rare variant edition. The atlas includes re-issues of Barentsz's 10 maps (first included in "Caertboeck vande Middelandtsche Zee", 1595) of the Mediterranean, with Jansson having completely changed the title and reworked the decorative embellishments, removing many of the great images originally added by Barentsz. BIBLE.
4to in 8's. Bound in mid-nineteenth century calf with metal clasps, later red morocco label, marbled endpapers, all edges red; title printed within a woodcut border, as is the separate title to the New Testament, text printed in double columns in black letter; small repairs to joints, a little rubbing to binding which has a couple of snall scrapes, minor worming to a section in the Old Testament, a few old stains and minor tears, top corner torn from Dddvi with loss of a few letters, upper margins cut close, just touching headlines in a few places, but generally a good clean copy. Geneva version. With Herrey's Concordances at the end as called for on the title-page (STC 13228b.10). Also at the end of this copy is Sternhold and Hopkins's English metre edition of "The Whole Booke of Psalmes", John Windet for the Assignes of Richard Daye, 1591 (STC 2479). This has some staining and the last two leaves are defective and inlaid to size. Bound in at the front is "The Booke of Common Prayer", Robert Barker and the Assignes of John Bill, 1636 (STC 16404), the title-page of which is soiled and restored at bottom corner. STC 2151. MAFFEI, Giovanni Pietro.
Cologne: Birckmann, 1589. Folio, with a large folding map; in contemporary vellum. Very early account of East Asia, with much information on China and Japan and the first published European description of the tea plant. This copy contains the large folding world map - based on the famous 1570 Ortelius - that does not ordinarily belong to this first Cologne edition. Comprising 16 continuously paginated parts principally compiled from the correspondence of Jesuit missionaries in the Far East, the Historiarum Indicarum was a popular and well-received account published at a high point in European curiosity about Asia. The sixth and twelfth parts are descriptions of China and Japan respectively. They rely heavily on the writings of Alessandro Valignano, a Jesuit pioneer widely credited with introducing Catholicism to Japan and responsible for Matteo Ricci's appointment on the China mission. This is a notably early and important work on China which - much like Mendoza's Historia of 1586 - describes the culture, products, trade and Imperial bureaucracy of China for a very curious European audience. It contains the first published account of the tea plant, a commodity that was to influence China's contact with the West for centuries to come. First published in Florence in 1588, the book was re-printed across Europe over the coming decade. This is an example of the first Cologne edition of 1589, this copy being remarkable for containing the map usually associated with the later Cologne edition of 1593: 'This map is occasionally found in copies of Birckmann's 1589 folio edition of Ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

CALENDRIER DES BERGERS
Paris, Nicolas Bonfons, [1589].
