[GROUP OF THIRTEEN MANUSCRIPT TRANSCRIPTIONS OF SPANISH COLONIAL DOCUMENTS RELATING TO CALIFORNIA, RANGING FROM 1589 TO 1774, ALL COPIED FROM ORIGINALS IN THE ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS IN SEVILLE]

[Various places. 1589-1774, but all copied in Seville in 1884].. [163]pp. Folio. Stitched gatherings. Some minor soiling. Very good. An interesting collection of documents on colonial Spanish California, transcribed from originals held in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain. The bulk of the documents are dated around the end of the 16th century, and relate to Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino (1548- 1624). The two lengthier pieces are "Diarios" of Spanish missionaries in California, Fray Junipero Serra and Fray Juan Crespi. It is likely that few if any of these documents were ever published in printed form, making a manuscript version the only available format. Each transcript is signed at the end with a statement about when and where it was copied. 1) CAPITULOS DE CARTA A S.M.

Venezia, appresso I Gioliti, 1589. - Adams,B,2548 - Bongi,II, pp. 432-33. Leggermente rifilato al margine sup., altrimenti fresco esemplare ben conservato.

Giovanni Bianchini per trovar col mezo dell'hore l'altezza de' Poli; et appresso un discorso fatto sopra il Moto della Trepidatione dell'Ottava Sfera, opera dignissima & curiosa novamente posta in luce. FIRST EDITION 1589, Italian text, small 4to, approximately 220 x 160 mm, 8¾ x 6¼ inches, author's large pictorial emblem on title page, printer's device on colophon, large decorated or historiated initials, 2 headpieces and a tailpiece, 9 woodcut astronomical diagrams in the text 2 almost full page, and pages of tide tables, leaves: (8), 112, (2) - Address to the Readers by Raimondo (1 page), Errata on 2 pages and colophon on final page, collation: ? - ??4, A - Dd4, 2E6, bound in vellum over board, raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, marbled endpapers. A very good copy of a rare early book on the ebb and flow of tides plus a brief section on the movement of trepidation of the eighth sphere and another which is a supplementary declaration to the rule of Giovanni Bianchini for finding the altitude or latitude of the poles. Raimondo was an Italian mathematician and scholar born in Verona in 1505 or 1506 (d. 1591?). Little is known of his long life but he wrote on astrology, geomancy, physics and astronomy as well as fluid dynamics. Sotheran's Bibliotheca Chemico - Mathematica, Volume II, 13844, reports a French comment that this Trattato on the tides was Raimondo's best work published at the age of 84, and that it is rare. The ex libris label on the front endpaper is that of Pierre Duhem (1861 ? 1916) a French physicist, mathematician, historian and philosopher of science, who made major contributions to the science of his day, particularly in the fields of hydrodynamics, elasticity, and thermodynamics. Novae Coelestium Orbium Theoricae congruentes cum observationibus N. Copernici.

Venice Damiano Zenario 1589. - First edition of New Theories of the Celestial Orbs Agreeing with the Observations of Copernicus, Magini’s principal astronomical treatise. The work is of interest for the 16th-century reception of Copernicus, whom Magini admired; and although he endorsed the unprecedented accuracy of Copernicus’s calculation of celestial movements he nevertheless publicly retained his belief in geocentrism. His private correspondence, however, leaves no doubt that Magini became a "closet" Copernican (see above). Even so, Magini represents a progressive case of 16th-century "establishment" science, and whether explicitly or not, and whether fairly or not, he is the target in much of Galileo’s more revolutionary embrace of the Copernican system. In this work Magini "took the position that Copernicus had so reformed astronomy that no correction of equal motions, or a very slight one, was now required. For although Copernicus had devised hypotheses which wandered far from verisimilitude, yet they corresponded closely to the phenomena. He, therefore, collated the ideas of Ptolemy and Copernicus, adding new hypotheses of his own where they seemed necessary, and has written an introductory text or theory of the planets along these lines. He asserts that there was a great demand for such a theory of the planets which would abandon the outmoded Alfonsine hypotheses and conform his recent observations without such absurd hypotheses as Copernicus had imagined" (Thorndike VI.56).At the time of the present work, Magini (1555-1617) held one of the two chairs of mathematics at Bologna, to which he had been elected over the young Galileo. This undeserved preference naturally aggravated the already advanced rivalry between the two. Magini was a talented calculator, producing the best ephemerides of his day, and was an accomplished geographer and cartographer. * Adams M-119; Riccardi I.2.65.5; Luigi Campedelli in DSB IX.12-13; Gingerich, "Science in the Age of Copernicus," Harvard Library Bulletin XXVI, no. 4 (1978), no. 42; Thorndike VI.56-9. Illustratum. Venice: Apud Haeredes Valerii Bonelli, 1589. 414, [2] ff. Main text in parallel columns. Octavo (5-1/2" x 4"). Recent period-style vellum (using material from an old volume), hand-lettered title to spine. Light rubbing to extremities, a few minor stains to boards, a few cracks to tect block (binding secure). Woodcut printer device to title page, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Some toning to text, occasional faint dampspotting, light browning and faint dampstaining to some leaves. Early owner signature to title page, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy in an attractive binding. * Later edition. A work of great authority, this popular dictionary was first published in 1559. It went through more than twenty-five editions, with several variations in content, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. All editions have two principal parts: the fifteenth-century Vocabularius attributed to Jacobus of Erfurt and Nebrija's Lexicon Iuris Civilis. It is a curious hybrid of late-medieval and renaissance scholarship; the former work is a typical scholastic compilation, the latter is a humanistic work grounded in philology and historical commentary. Nebrija was an important Spanish scholar and educator. Educated at the universities of Salamanca and Bologna, he read widely in law, medicine and theology. His philological work, which included the first Spanish grammar and dictionary, led to the standardization of the language. In 1502 he was a member of a group of scholars gathered by Cardinal Ximenes de Cisneros at Alcala to produce the Complutensian Polyglot Bible. This edition also includes Caccialupi's Tractatus de Modo Studendi in Utroque Iure, an introductory textbook for law students.

XVI-XVIII), Firenze, Olschki, 1991, pp. 17 e sgg.). Cfr. Young, Bibliography of Memory, p. 92. Bongi, II, 149. Gamba, 1373. Haym, Libri rari, p. 372. Adams, D-813. STC Italian Books, 225. Salamanca: Guillemun Foquel, 1589 [i-xx] [title, Dedication to Philip II, "Tassa" signed Christoual de Leon, "Erratas"]+1-640 pages [title to de Procuranda Indorum... dated 1588, Colophon dated 1588] Duodecimo (6 1/4" x 4 1/4") issued in contemporary full limp vellum with leather ties still intact. (Sabin 118) A reissue of the 1588 edition.José de Acosta (September/October 1539– February 15, 1600), was a Spanish 16th-century Jesuit missionary and naturalist in Latin America. Born at Medina del Campo in Spain, he became a novice in the Society of Jesus at the age of thirteen at the place of his birth. Four of his brothers successively joined the same order. Before leaving Spain, he was lecturer in theology at Ocana, and in April 1569, was sent to Lima, Peru, where the Jesuits had been established in the proceeding year. At Lima, Acosta again occupied the chair of theology; his fame as an orator had preceded him. In 1571 he went to Cuzco as a visitor of the college of the Jesuits then recently founded. Returning to Lima three years later, to again fill the chair of theology, he was elected provincial in 1576. He founded a number of colleges, among them those of Arequipa, Potosí, Chuquisaca, Panama and La Paz, but met with considerable opposition from the viceroy, Francisco de Toledo, Count of Oropesa. His official duties obliged him to investigate personally a very extensive range of territory, so that he acquired a practical knowledge of the vast province, and of its aboriginal inhabitants. At the provincial council of 1582, at Lima, Acosta played a very important part. Called to Spain by the King in 1585, he was detained in Mexico, where he dedicated himself to studies of the country and people; returning to Europe, he filled the chair of theology at the Roman college in 1594, as well as other important positions. At the time of his death, he was rector of the college at Salamanca. Aside from his publication of the proceedings of the provincial councils of 1567 and 1583, and several works of exclusively theological import, Acosta is best known as the writer of De Natura Novi Orbis, De promulgatione Evangelii apud Barbaros, sive De Procuranda Indorum salute and above all, the Historia natural y moral de las Indias. The first two appeared at Salamanca in 1588, the last at Seville in 1590, and was soon after its publication translated into various languages. It is chiefly the Historia natural y moral that has established the reputation of Acosta. In a form more concise than that employed by his predecessors, Francisco Lopez de Gómara and Oviedo, he treated the natural and philosophic history of the New World from a broader point of view. In it, more than a century before Europeans learned of the Bering Strait, Acosta hypothesized that Latin America's indigenous peoples had migrated from Asia to Latin America. He also divided them into three barbarian categories. The Historia also described Inca and Aztec customs and history, as well as other information such as farming practices.Condition:iii - xvi, 639-640 pages skillfully repaired affecting some text, repaired worm hole affecting text throughout, endpapers renewed, Provenance: near contemporary annotation on page iii. Sotheran's Bibliotheca Chemico-Mathematica, Volume II, 13844, reports a French comment that this Trattato on the tides was Raimondo's best work published at the age of 84, and that it is rare. The ex libris label on the front endpaper is that of Pierre Duhem (1861 – 1916) a French physicist, mathematician, historian and philosopher of science, who made major contributions to the science of his day, particularly in the fields of hydrodynamics, elasticity, and thermodynamics. Rare first edition of the account of the charting voyage by Maerten Gerritsz. Vries (1589-1646) to the North of Japan, together with the popular account of a Dutch West India Company voyage to Chile under Hendrik Brouwer (1581-1643). Another edition was published by Jan Jacobsz. Bouman circa 1650/60, followed by two editions in French of Vries's part only in 1673 and 1732. An edition based on the original manuscript of Vries's account was published in 1858 by Frederik Muller.Brouwer, one of the directors of the Dutch West India Company, acted as the commander of a fleet of six ships, specially sent to the western coast of South America to activate the trade between the Dutch and the natives, who were at the time in bad humor with the Spaniards. During this voyage, which resulted in the first place in a better knowledge of that coast, Brouwer died at Chiloe and was buried at Valdivia in August 1643. After his death the command fell to Elias Herckmans, who occupied an important post in Brazil. Appended to that journal is the very important account of a charting voyage to Japan. That same year (1643) Maerten Gerritsz. Vries, employed by the Dutch East India Company, was ordered to explore and chart the northernmost islands of Japan. He visited Hokkaido (Yezo) and Sakhalin, discovered the islands Iturup and Urup and gave his name to the strait between those islands. La Pérouse considered him one of the most eminent seafarers of his time. Fine copy of a rare work with accounts of two Dutch voyages to Chile and Japan.

Maris Pacifici (quod vulgo Mar del Zur)

Antwerp: Plantin, 1589. Engraved map, 435 x 560 mm., original hand-colouring, small tear with old paper repair to original central fold, some toning, a few marks and stains, but in very good condition; framed. The first printed map devoted to the Pacific. A very good copy, with original hand-colouring, of the first printed map to be devoted solely to the Pacific. The map includes a vast southern continent, which stretches from a peak right below New Guinea all the way to connect with the southern shores of the Straits of Magellan. The map has many firsts: it is the first to name North and South America separately, and the first to shift the islands of New Guinea and Japan away from the American coast, thus stretching the Pacific into a more realistic shape. The map is also particularly good regarding Spanish America, with interesting details of the entire west coast of South America, Central America, California, and stretching north towards what is now Alaska. The width of America has been considerably corrected, so that it is now quite narrow across the Tropic of Capricorn; as Wagner points out, this has the effect of moving the peninsula of California, correctly, to the east. Ortelius used Spanish and Portuguese manuscript maps to correct many contemporary misconceptions about the Americas, although it remains unclear what his sources were for some of the other corrections. The absence of inland detail such as topographic features and the names of towns may reflect the Flemish cartographer's reliance upon portolan charts for inspiration. Yet it is rich in coastal detail, and especially the treatment of the west coast of the Americas and the islands of east Asia. The southern continent that fills the lower portion of the map incorporates Tierra del Fuego, but otherwise remains vast and mysterious. Ortelius celebrates the circumnavigation of Magellan with a beautiful and highly detailed engraving of his galleon Victoria situated off the coast of Peru, and the hypothetical southern land is named for the great circumnavigator but noted as still unexplored, "Terra Australis sive Magellanica nondum detecta". See also catalogue number xx for Ortelius' map of South-east Asia.
