Folio, 17th century blind-decorated calf; Part I: pp. (x)(of 12)+(8)(index), engraved title and 16 maps; Part II: pp. (iv)+(4)(index), engraved title and 9 map; Part III: pp. (iv)+(blank)+(8)(index), engraved title and 26 maps; Part IV: pp. (ii)+(11)(index), engraved title, portrait of Mercator and 22 maps, plus Rumold Mercator's maps of the World and Europe. A total of 4 titles, 75 maps and one portrait, all in fine original colour. Small restoration to foot of spine. The maps are in excellent condition; Piedmont map printed upside-down. A fine example of the First Issue of the first four parts of Gerard Mercator's atlas, all that was published during the lifetime. The first three parts were first issued in 1585 as ''Tabulæ Geographicæ", containing: 'Galliae tabule geographicæ' (France), 'Belgii Inferioris Geographicæ tabule' (Low Countries), and 'Germaniae tabule geographicæ' (Germany); the fourth part, 'Italiæ, Sclavoniæ et Græciæ' (Italy, Balkans and Greece) was published four years later, as this example. The fifth and final part, 'Atlantis Pars Altera', was delayed by a stroke that ended Mercator's productivity in 1589, not appearing until 1595, a year after the great cartographer's death. There are two extra maps appearing in this edition (as called for) attributed to Mercator's son, Rumold: the World (first issue in an atlas) and Europe (a pre-atlas issue without text on the back). Biblia, det er, Den gantske Hellige Skrifft, paa Danske, igen offuerseet oc Prentet effter Salige oc Høylofflige ihukommelse, Kong Frederichs den II Befalning. Met Register, Alle D. Lutheri Fortaler . King Frederick II's Bible - Second Bible in Danish

Copenhagen: Matz Vingaardt, 1589 An impressive tome bound in elaborately gilded and panelled full dark tan, late 17th/early 18th century continental calf with elaborate brass clasps. Gilt armorial to front board. Raised bands and elaborate gilding to spine. Professionally and subtly rebacked. One clasp thong repaired. Heavy wooden bevelled boards. Marbled endpapers but missing free endpapers. 19th and 20th century ink notes to flyleaf. Title page a little trimmed around margins, and this and the dedication leaf have some paper restoration at margins. Portrait of Frederick II pasted to title page verso - as called for, and sometimes absent. Numerous fine woodcut illustrations often of a particularly gruesome nature. Occasional early ink marginalia. The general title and the titles to pts. 2 and 3 are within woodcut frames, containing representations of the Creation, etc., and the royal arms. The illustrations throughout the book resemble those in the folio English Bible (Bishops' version) of 1568, and are enclosed within similar frames. The second Danish Bible, known as 'Frederick II's Bible'. A revision of the first edition of 1550, prepared at the command of the King by a small company at Copenhagen. The Pentateuch was committed to Paul Madsen, Bishop of Zealand; the Prophets to A. Lauritsen; the Psalter to Desiderius Foss; and the rest of the Old Testament to Jo rgen Dybvad and P. Aagesen; while the New Testament was assigned to N. Hemmingsen. The King's chaplain, C. Knopf, acted as intermediary between the Sovereign and the revisers. This edition contains translations of Luther's prologues and some of his notes, the summaries of Vitus Theodorus, and a concordance. The date 1588 appears only in the colophon at the end of pt. 1; elsewhere the book is dated 1589. The Synod of Odense in 1589 ordered that every church should procure a copy of the Danish Bible, and directed the clergy to provide themselves with Latin Bibles and read a portion every day. Engraved title, ):(5, (:)6, +6, *4, A-Nnn6 ; A-Oo6, Pp4; A-Cc6, Dd4. Some mild waterstaining. First book - ):(2 nearly loose. Minor loss to Aiii and Cciiii fore margin not affecting text, Occasional minor handling tear to margin of 1-2 inch repaired. 3 inch repaired closed tear to Lll1. Fine woodcut title to The Prophets. Kii and Ffiiii with repaired closed tear of 3 inches. Fine woodcut title to the New Testament. Ddii with minor restoration to one corner. Ddiii with restored bottom margin with some loss of text and date to colophon. Ddiiii blank. Collates complete. The first gather of the prelims which finished on ):(5 has continuous text and does not appear to be lacking a leaf. Apparently rarer than the 1550 first edition - Copac records only the Cambridge copy in the UK, as against four copies of the 1550 first edition in the UK. Last copy recorded sold at auction was at Sothebys in 1987 when a copy with some faults sold for £2000 plus commission. Folio - 15 Inches.. Second Edition. Full Calf. Very Good/No Jacket.

Historiarum Indicarum libri XVI. Selectarum ítem ex India Epistolarum

Cologne: Birckmann, 1589. Folio, with a large folding map; title-page lightly browned with a small water-stain (margins neatly strengthened with tissue paper), aside from occasional modest foxing and toning a very good copy in contemporary vellum, rubbed with two small sections from the spine sympathetically replaced and restored. Very early published account of China and Japan. Very early account of East Asia, with much information on China and Japan and the first published European description of the tea plant. This copy contains the large folding world map - based on the famous 1570 Ortelius - that does not ordinarily belong to this first Cologne edition. Comprising 16 continuously paginated parts principally compiled from the correspondence of Jesuit missionaries in the Far East, the Historiarum Indicarum was a popular and well-received account published at a high point in European curiosity about Asia. The sixth and twelfth parts are descriptions of China and Japan respectively. They rely heavily on the writings of Alessandro Valignano, a Jesuit pioneer widely credited with introducing Catholicism to Japan and responsible for Matteo Ricci's appointment on the China mission. This is a notably early and important work on China which - much like Mendoza's Historia of 1586 - describes the culture, products, trade and Imperial bureaucracy of China for a very curious European audience. It contains the first published account of the tea plant, a commodity that was to influence China's contact with the West for centuries to come. First published in Florence in 1588, the book was re-printed across Europe over the coming decade. This is an example of the first Cologne edition of 1589, this copy being remarkable for containing the map usually associated with the later Cologne edition of 1593: 'This map is occasionally found in copies of Birckmann's 1589 folio edition of Maffei, but there is no evidence that its inclusion was intended at publication, nor is it called for on the title page of that edition' (Auvermann & Payne 134). Of the German editions, the 1593 appears most prevalent, and is typically cited in the bibliographies consulted. Despite the title, the Historiarum Indicarum is a chronicle of Jesuit activity across the globe. Accordingly, the scope is greater than Asia and contains a good account of the Portuguese empire in Brazil, 'describing it very accurately' (Borba de Moraes).

GROUP OF THIRTEEN MANUSCRIPT TRANSCRIPTIONS OF SPANISH COLONIAL DOCUMENTS RELATING TO CALIFORNIA, RANGING FROM 1589 TO 1774, ALL COPIED FROM ORIGINALS IN THE ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS IN SEVILLE].

[Various places. -1774, but all copied in Seville in 1884]. 1589 - [163]pp. Folio. Stitched gatherings. Some minor soiling. Very good. An interesting collection of documents on colonial Spanish California, transcribed from originals held in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain. The bulk of the documents are dated around the end of the 16th century, and relate to Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino (1548- 1624). The two lengthier pieces are "Diarios" of Spanish missionaries in California, Fray Junipero Serra and Fray Juan Crespi. It is likely that few if any of these documents were ever published in printed form, making a manuscript version the only available format. Each transcript is signed at the end with a statement about when and where it was copied. 1) CAPITULOS DE CARTA A S.M. [GROUP OF THIRTEEN MANUSCRIPT TRANSCRIPTIONS OF SPANISH COLONIAL DOCUMENTS RELATING TO CALIFORNIA, RANGING FROM 1589 TO 1774, ALL COPIED FROM ORIGINALS IN THE ARCHIVO GENERAL DE INDIAS IN SEVILLE]

[Various places. 1589-1774, but all copied in Seville in 1884].. [163]pp.

Venezia, appresso I Gioliti, 1589. - Adams,B,2548 - Bongi,II, pp. 432-33. Leggermente rifilato al margine sup., altrimenti fresco esemplare ben conservato.

Giovanni Bianchini per trovar col mezo dell'hore l'altezza de' Poli; et appresso un discorso fatto sopra il Moto della Trepidatione dell'Ottava Sfera, opera dignissima & curiosa novamente posta in luce. FIRST EDITION 1589, Italian text, small 4to, approximately 220 x 160 mm, 8¾ x 6¼ inches, author's large pictorial emblem on title page, printer's device on colophon, large decorated or historiated initials, 2 headpieces and a tailpiece, 9 woodcut astronomical diagrams in the text 2 almost full page, and pages of tide tables, leaves: (8), 112, (2) - Address to the Readers by Raimondo (1 page), Errata on 2 pages and colophon on final page, collation: ? - ??4, A - Dd4, 2E6, bound in vellum over board, raised bands and gilt rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, marbled endpapers. A very good copy of a rare early book on the ebb and flow of tides plus a brief section on the movement of trepidation of the eighth sphere and another which is a supplementary declaration to the rule of Giovanni Bianchini for finding the altitude or latitude of the poles. Raimondo was an Italian mathematician and scholar born in Verona in 1505 or 1506 (d. 1591?). Little is known of his long life but he wrote on astrology, geomancy, physics and astronomy as well as fluid dynamics. Sotheran's Bibliotheca Chemico - Mathematica, Volume II, 13844, reports a French comment that this Trattato on the tides was Raimondo's best work published at the age of 84, and that it is rare. The ex libris label on the front endpaper is that of Pierre Duhem (1861 ? 1916) a French physicist, mathematician, historian and philosopher of science, who made major contributions to the science of his day, particularly in the fields of hydrodynamics, elasticity, and thermodynamics. Novae Coelestium Orbium Theoricae congruentes cum observationibus N. Copernici.

Venice Damiano Zenario 1589. - First edition of New Theories of the Celestial Orbs Agreeing with the Observations of Copernicus, Magini’s principal astronomical treatise. The work is of interest for the 16th-century reception of Copernicus, whom Magini admired; and although he endorsed the unprecedented accuracy of Copernicus’s calculation of celestial movements he nevertheless publicly retained his belief in geocentrism. His private correspondence, however, leaves no doubt that Magini became a "closet" Copernican (see above). Even so, Magini represents a progressive case of 16th-century "establishment" science, and whether explicitly or not, and whether fairly or not, he is the target in much of Galileo’s more revolutionary embrace of the Copernican system. In this work Magini "took the position that Copernicus had so reformed astronomy that no correction of equal motions, or a very slight one, was now required. For although Copernicus had devised hypotheses which wandered far from verisimilitude, yet they corresponded closely to the phenomena. He, therefore, collated the ideas of Ptolemy and Copernicus, adding new hypotheses of his own where they seemed necessary, and has written an introductory text or theory of the planets along these lines. He asserts that there was a great demand for such a theory of the planets which would abandon the outmoded Alfonsine hypotheses and conform his recent observations without such absurd hypotheses as Copernicus had imagined" (Thorndike VI.56).At the time of the present work, Magini (1555-1617) held one of the two chairs of mathematics at Bologna, to which he had been elected over the young Galileo. This undeserved preference naturally aggravated the already advanced rivalry between the two. Magini was a talented calculator, producing the best ephemerides of his day, and was an accomplished geographer and cartographer. * Adams M-119; Riccardi I.2.65.5; Luigi Campedelli in DSB IX.12-13; Gingerich, "Science in the Age of Copernicus," Harvard Library Bulletin XXVI, no. 4 (1978), no. 42; Thorndike VI.56-9. Some toning to text, occasional faint dampspotting, light browning and faint dampstaining to some leaves. Early owner signature to title page, interior otherwise clean. A nice copy in an attractive binding. * Later edition. A work of great authority, this popular dictionary was first published in 1559. It went through more than twenty-five editions, with several variations in content, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. All editions have two principal parts: the fifteenth-century Vocabularius attributed to Jacobus of Erfurt and Nebrija's Lexicon Iuris Civilis. It is a curious hybrid of late-medieval and renaissance scholarship; the former work is a typical scholastic compilation, the latter is a humanistic work grounded in philology and historical commentary. Nebrija was an important Spanish scholar and educator. Educated at the universities of Salamanca and Bologna, he read widely in law, medicine and theology. His philological work, which included the first Spanish grammar and dictionary, led to the standardization of the language. In 1502 he was a member of a group of scholars gathered by Cardinal Ximenes de Cisneros at Alcala to produce the Complutensian Polyglot Bible. This edition also includes Caccialupi's Tractatus de Modo Studendi in Utroque Iure, an introductory textbook for law students. appresso i Gioliti,, in Venetia, 1589 - In-8° (201x146mm), pp. 56, legatura novecentesca in p. pergamena rigida con unghie eseguita a imitazione delle legature antiche. Titolo in oro su tassello in pelle rossa al dorso. XVI-XVIII), Firenze, Olschki, 1991, pp. 17 e sgg.). Cfr. Young, Bibliography of Memory, p. 92. Bongi, II, 149. Gamba, 1373. Haym, Libri rari, p. 372. Adams, D-813. STC Italian Books, 225.
