(Queen Elizabeth) [Gifford, Gilbert?]
London: Printed by I. W[olfe] for Francis Coldock, dwelling in Paules-churchyarde at the signe of the green Dragon, 1588. First edition. With a superb emblematic frontispiece woodcut of St. George and the dragon on A1v. [8], 128 pp , collating A-R4. 8vo. Cardinal Allen and the Catholic Plot to Overthrow Elizabeth. In 1587, Sir William Stanley, an English commander with the Earl of Leicester's forces sent to help the Dutch overthrow the Spanish, perfidiously surrendered the town of Deventer to the Spanish. Cardinal William Allen, a leader of the exiled Catholics in Flanders, "published a defense of Stanley's action [COPIE OF A LETTER WRITTEN ... CONCERNING THE YEELDING UP, OF THE CITIE OF DAVENTRIE, Antwerp, 1587] claiming that the English involvement in a war against Philip was sinful and unjust, Stanley's action that of an informed conscience, and that any Catholic should do the same" (ODNB). Furthermore, Cardinal Allen encouraged Philip II to undertake the invasion of England and to overthrow Elizabeth. This particular work, an answer to Cardinal Allen's letter, published in the same year, was written about a month before the Armada was sighted on July 19; it was entered into the books of the Stationer's Company on July 1, 1588. The preface "To the reader" is signed "G.D." The attribution to Gilbert Gifford -- a double agent who had warned the English crown of Sir William Stanley's questionable loyalty -- is that of the Scottish historian, Sir William Stirling Maxwell, whose neat handwritten notes fill the endpapers of this copy. In "To the Reader," the author explains hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bildausschnitt (rote Umrandung) 38,2 x 53 cm, Blattgr. 53 x 62 cm. Nebehay-Wagner 108/IV/45a. Zu Anna Beek siehe Wurzbach, Niederl. Künstler, I,68. Thucydides recognised that the Peloponnesian war was the event of greatest importance in the history of Greece and he devoted himself to recording it in the belief that knowledge of the past is the best guide to the future. With De bello Peloponnesiaco Thucydides established the highest historical methods and standards, limiting his sources to either personal knowledge or verifiable witnesses in order to present as accurate and objective a picture of the event as possible and thus to provide a 'possession for all time'. It is our only record of the history of that war. The Estienne 1588 edition is "generally considered the best 16th-century edition of the greatest historian of Athens. For this new edition Estienne has corrected the Greek text and scholia, as well as further revised Valla's Latin translation, which is now printed on the same page with the Greek text in parallel columns, while the Greek scholia are printed at the foot of the page" (Schreiber). GRANADA (Luis de).
En Barcelona, por Francisco Trincher, 1588. in-folio. 4ff. 244pp. 2ff. "The best known of his ascetical writings, and the one that achieved the greatest measure of success, is "The Sinner's Guide" (La Guia de Pecadores). ( ) It is marked by a smooth, harmonious style of purest Spanish idiom which has merited for it the reputation of a classic, and by an unctuous eloquence that has made it … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of a fundamental book in the history both of technology and of book design, and ?one of the most elegantly produced of all technological treatises. The scientific import of Ramelli's work resides in his demonstration of the unlimited possibilities of machines. Very Nice: Red and Black title page and text with mutiple small (1 1/2" X 1") decorations throughout the text: some foxing: some paper loss and occasional tear: front board off as is front endpaper facing: ex-library. Lovely missal with Gregorian calendar, order of the Mass, devotions to Mary and other important markers of the faith. (continuous pagination and signatures). 18th-century French red morocco, gilt fillets on cover, spine gilt in compartments, gilt tooled turn-ins, gilt edges. [London, John Wolfe], A handsome copy of this famous Elizabethan piracy by John Wolfe, a London printer who learned his trade in Italy; in the 1570s he spent time in Florence and likely worked, for a time, at the prestigious Giunta Press. He employed exiled and expatriate Italians as editors and produced a number of such editions by Italian writers.
