[Click Below for Full Description]

ASTROLOGY). PALINGENIUS STELLATIS, MARCELLUS, Pseudonym. [MANZOLLI, PIETRO?]
London: Robert Robinson, 1588. Third Complete Edition in English. This is the famous work of the 16th century Italian poet who has been identified acrostically (from the initial letters of the first 20 lines of this book) as Pietro Angelo Manzolli. Because "Zodiake" sarcastically attacks monks and church abuses, its author was labelled "impious," the work was put on the "Index Librorum Prohibitorum," and the author was later disinterred and burned as a heretic (something that only made it more attractive to Elizabethan reformers). The book includes many judicious maxims, and it has been called a truly philosophical satire against immorality and prejudice. (Chalmers) In scientific terms, it is a study of the plurality of worlds and explores the cause of motion and the purpose of pain. "Based on the commonplace that the pleasures of the body are far inferior to those of the soul, its ideas resonate in Shakespeare and Spenser, who may well both have read it." (DNB) For modern collectors, the book is especially appealing as a rare and early astrological work in English. First published in part in 1560, this English translation is the work of Barnabe Googe (1540-94), and is said by DNB to have been praised by Roger Ascham, Francis Meres, George Turbervile, Clement Robinson, Jasper Heywood, Arthur Hall (translator of Homer), William Webbe, and Gabriel Harvey. Before our edition, the book was published in 1565 and again in 1576, but all 16th century printings are now scarce in the marketplace: the last copy listed as selling in ABPC and RBH was in 1997, and there are just three … [Click Below for Full Description]

In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow. From the 7th century the West Slavic Rani (or Rujani) built an empire on Rügen and the neighbouring coast between Recknitz and Ryck. It decidedly affected the history of the Baltic Sea area and the surrounding Obodritic and Liutician occupied mainland for the next few centuries. In 1168, the Danish king, Valdemar I, and his army commander and advisor, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde destroyed the Svetovid temple in the hillfort at Cape Arkona, ending both the territorial and religious autonomy of the Rani; their former monarchs became Danish princes of Rügen.Under Danish rule the Principality of Rugia changed its character. Danish monasteries were established. The Slavic cultural element disappeared, mostly due to the lack of their own Slavic church structures, so that the Rani were absorbed in the period that followed into the now German-influenced people of Rügen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Belon, P.
Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cavellat, 1588. 4to (22.1 x 15.4 cm). [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red.l The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517 - murdered in Paris, 1564). Belon travelled through these regions between 1546 and 1550 and made numerous observations on the plants and their use, on animals (including a great deal on herpetology), people (with their various costumes) and towns. The work includes a map/view of Alexandria, and of the Sea of Marmara. The two fold-outs are missing, as usual. Belon's reports are generally correct and not rooted in fantasy and hearsay as is often the case with his contemporaries, the sole exception being the illustration of a small dragon-like creature. Other woodcuts show trees, birds, mammals, snakes, a crocodile, a giraffe, a lobster, etc. Two illustrations cut short in the margin with minor loss. A fine copy in an attractive binding. Brunet, 4533, p. 762; Nissen ZBI, 304. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MUENSTER SEBASTIAN
Petri. Silografia, mm 245x383.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Lovely missal with Gregorian calendar, order of the Mass, devotions to Mary and other important markers of the faith. Beautiful example of early book art: smooth vellum binding over solid board, red and black printed title page with religious vignettes at top and bottom of page; heavy paper, an epistle followed by the calendar of the Church with some days marked in red, general prayers, various masses for different holy days, and hymns for other holidays. Much of the book has little decorations on each page, either a vignette of a saint or a decorative capitols. In very good condition, with age appropriate paper discoloration but very little foxing: paper loss to the endpapers :(which look to be a newer addition), bookplate of Haverhill Public Library, James E Gale Fund, library markings, especially on first several pages. Otherwise, text is clear and crisp; elegant Gothic lettering in red and black, intermittent decorative woodcuts. (Queen Elizabeth) [Gifford, Gilbert?]
London: Printed by I. W[olfe] for Francis Coldock, dwelling in Paules-churchyarde at the signe of the green Dragon, 1588. First edition. With a superb emblematic frontispiece woodcut of St. George and the dragon on A1v. [8], 128 pp , collating A-R4. 8vo. Cardinal Allen and the Catholic Plot to Overthrow Elizabeth. In 1587, Sir William Stanley, an English commander with the Earl of Leicester's forces sent to help the Dutch overthrow the Spanish, perfidiously surrendered the town of Deventer to the Spanish. Cardinal William Allen, a leader of the exiled Catholics in Flanders, "published a defense of Stanley's action [COPIE OF A LETTER WRITTEN ... CONCERNING THE YEELDING UP, OF THE CITIE OF DAVENTRIE, Antwerp, 1587] claiming that the English involvement in a war against Philip was sinful and unjust, Stanley's action that of an informed conscience, and that any Catholic should do the same" (ODNB). Furthermore, Cardinal Allen encouraged Philip II to undertake the invasion of England and to overthrow Elizabeth. This particular work, an answer to Cardinal Allen's letter, published in the same year, was written about a month before the Armada was sighted on July 19; it was entered into the books of the Stationer's Company on July 1, 1588. The preface "To the reader" is signed "G.D." The attribution to Gilbert Gifford -- a double agent who had warned the English crown of Sir William Stanley's questionable loyalty -- is that of the Scottish historian, Sir William Stirling Maxwell, whose neat handwritten notes fill the endpapers of this copy. In "To the Reader," the author explains hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brixen. - Brixia Tyrolis. Bildausschnitt (rote Umrandung) 38,2 x 53 cm, Blattgr. 53 x 62 cm. Nebehay-Wagner 108/IV/45a. Zu Anna Beek siehe Wurzbach, Niederl. Künstler, I,68. Very good copy. ---- PMM 102 (this edition); Adams T667; Renouard, Estienne, 152-153; Schreiber, Estienne, 216; Dibdin II, 506. - Second Estienne edition. Thucydides recognised that the Peloponnesian war was the event of greatest importance in the history of Greece and he devoted himself to recording it in the belief that knowledge of the past is the best guide to the future. With De bello Peloponnesiaco Thucydides established the highest historical methods and standards, limiting his sources to either personal knowledge or verifiable witnesses in order to present as accurate and objective a picture of the event as possible and thus to provide a 'possession for all time'. It is our only record of the history of that war. The Estienne 1588 edition is "generally considered the best 16th-century edition of the greatest historian of Athens. For this new edition Estienne has corrected the Greek text and scholia, as well as further revised Valla's Latin translation, which is now printed on the same page with the Greek text in parallel columns, while the Greek scholia are printed at the foot of the page" (Schreiber). The printining place is uncertain. PMM states Geneva as place whe … [Click Below for Full Description]
