PORTA, Giambattista Della
1588. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The earliest issue of Giambattista Della Porta's 'Phytognomonica' - a very rare first edition! This book was the first book to classify plants according to their habitats, a classification that came before Linnean taxonomy. Theories state that Porta was the first to give classification to plants. The dozens of illustrations within 'Phytognomonica' are helpful in determining the plants and seeds that Porta had the most exposure to. This book, while topically a botanical reference, includes herbs that are known cures, animal bites and stings that have healing properties, plants to cure male baldness, and other remedies. Use of red roses and coral being effective against hemorrhages; rhubarb, saffron, and lemon are cures for bile, Arber notes that 'Phytognomonica' had a direct influence on the work of 17th-century herbalists and their theories on botany. Britannia Prout Divisa fuit Temporibus Anglo-Saxonum, Praesertim Durante Illorum Heptarchia (Großbritannien) Es handelt sich hierbei um eine rare, originale, kolorierte Kupferstich-Landkarte Großbritanniens von Johann Janssonius (1588 - 1664) aus dem Jahr 1650. Titel: Britannia Prout Divisa fuit Temporibus Anglo-Saxonum, Praesertim Durante Illorum Heptarchia Gebiet bzw. This magnificent map of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in Britian is based on Blaeu's map of 1645 which is already based on the map by John Speed from 1611. The map by Jansson can be distinguished from Blaeu's map by the additional compass roses, rhumb lines and sailing ships. The sets of vignettes on both sides of the map show historical scenes in Saxon history between 456 and 662 A.D. These vignettes have been completely redrawn by a Dutch minature master. Engraved title within architectural frame, engraved portrait of the author on verso of title, title and portrait by Léonard Gaultier, 194 engravings, of which 174 full-page and 20 double-page [numbered to 195, numbers 148-149 a single double-page plate], three signed with the monogram "JG", text and engravings printed within borders of typographic floral ornaments, 4-line historiated and 2-line floriated initials, woodcut tail-pieces and corner ornaments. The work was reprinted only once, in 1620. Ramelli shows "the unlimited possibilities of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

ASTROLOGY). PALINGENIUS STELLATIS, MARCELLUS, Pseudonym. [MANZOLLI, PIETRO?]
London: Robert Robinson, 1588. Third Complete Edition in English. This is the famous work of the 16th century Italian poet who has been identified acrostically (from the initial letters of the first 20 lines of this book) as Pietro Angelo Manzolli. Because "Zodiake" sarcastically attacks monks and church abuses, its author was labelled "impious," the work was put on the "Index Librorum Prohibitorum," and the author was later disinterred and burned as a heretic (something that only made it more attractive to Elizabethan reformers). The book includes many judicious maxims, and it has been called a truly philosophical satire against immorality and prejudice. (Chalmers) In scientific terms, it is a study of the plurality of worlds and explores the cause of motion and the purpose of pain. "Based on the commonplace that the pleasures of the body are far inferior to those of the soul, its ideas resonate in Shakespeare and Spenser, who may well both have read it." (DNB) For modern collectors, the book is especially appealing as a rare and early astrological work in English. First published in part in 1560, this English translation is the work of Barnabe Googe (1540-94), and is said by DNB to have been praised by Roger Ascham, Francis Meres, George Turbervile, Clement Robinson, Jasper Heywood, Arthur Hall (translator of Homer), William Webbe, and Gabriel Harvey. Before our edition, the book was published in 1565 and again in 1576, but all 16th century printings are now scarce in the marketplace: the last copy listed as selling in ABPC and RBH was in 1997, and there are just three … [Click Below for Full Description]

In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow. From the 7th century the West Slavic Rani (or Rujani) built an empire on Rügen and the neighbouring coast between Recknitz and Ryck. It decidedly affected the history of the Baltic Sea area and the surrounding Obodritic and Liutician occupied mainland for the next few centuries. In 1168, the Danish king, Valdemar I, and his army commander and advisor, Bishop Absalon of Roskilde destroyed the Svetovid temple in the hillfort at Cape Arkona, ending both the territorial and religious autonomy of the Rani; their former monarchs became Danish princes of Rügen.Under Danish rule the Principality of Rugia changed its character. Danish monasteries were established. Belon, P.
Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cavellat, 1588. 4to (22.1 x 15.4 cm). [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red.l The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517 - murdered in Paris, 1564). Belon travelled through these regions between 1546 and 1550 and made numerous observations on the plants and their use, on animals (including a great deal on herpetology), people (with their various costumes) and towns. The work includes a map/view of Alexandria, and of the Sea of Marmara. The two fold-outs are missing, as usual. Belon's reports are generally correct and not rooted in fantasy and hearsay as is often the case with his contemporaries, the sole exception being the illustration of a small dragon-like creature. Other woodcuts show trees, birds, mammals, snakes, a crocodile, a giraffe, a lobster, etc. Two illustrations cut short in the margin with minor loss. A fine copy in an attractive binding. Brunet, 4533, p. 762; Nissen ZBI, 304. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MUENSTER SEBASTIAN
Petri. Silografia, mm 245x383.

[Click Below for Full Description]
