Belon, P.
Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cavellat, 1588. 4to (22.1 x 15.4 cm). [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. = The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517 - murdered in Paris, 1564). Belon travelled through these regions between 1546 and 1550 and made numerous observations on the plants and their use, on animals (including a great deal on herpetology), people (with their various costumes) and towns. The work includes a map/view of Alexandria, and of the Sea of Marmara. The two fold-outs are missing, as usual. Belon's reports are generally correct and not rooted in fantasy and hearsay as is often the case with his contemporaries, the sole exception being the illustration of a small dragon-like creature. Other woodcuts show trees, birds, mammals, snakes, a crocodile, a giraffe, a lobster, etc. Two illustrations cut short in the margin with minor loss. A fine copy in an attractive binding. Brunet, 4533, p. 762; Nissen ZBI, 304. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

LUCAS JANSZOON WAGHENAER (1533 - 1606)
Engraved map, 53,9x37,8cm Verso one page text and description London 1588 In 1584 - 85 Waghenaer published in Dutch his book with charts "Speculum nauticum..." which was the first real sea atlas in the world followed by several editions in different languages. Towards the end of the 1580s England and Queen Elisabeth was at war with Spain, the so-called "Anglo-Spanish War 1585 - 1604". The big threat for the British was the "Spanish Armada", the impressive Spanish fleet. To be prepared for a major sea battle, Lord Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton commissioned through the clerk to the Privy Council, Anthony Ashley an English translation of Waghenaer's pilot book with the Latin edition from 1586 as a model (see Kunstantikvariat PAMA, March 2011 entry 71). In general the maps for the English edition were simplified from the earlier versions but this is not the case with the most important chart in the pilot guide, the general chart of Europe. The most elegant map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius and is richly decorated with coats of arms. The English sea charts by Waghenaer became so popular that the expression "Waggooners" became synonymous with charts in general.THE CHART IS A GREAT RARITY IN THE HISTORY OF MARINE CARTOGRAPHY. WE ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY INDIVIDUAL COPY SOLD ANYWHERE IN AUCTIONS OR IN DEALERS' CATALOGUES WITHIN THE LAST 15 - 20 YEARS.. On three sides several marginal restorations affecting the printed surface in places, but with minor loss of geographical information. Especially seen in the upper right corner, the area of the Adriatic, and along lower margin. So … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aretino, Pietro.
[London, John Wolfe], 1588.. Small 8vo. 4 parts in one volume. VIII, 285, (3) ff. With medallion portrait (legend: "D. Petrus Aretinus Flagellum Principum") on title (repeated three times). 19th c. calf (slightly worn).. Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared in Venice in 1553) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. 'La Talanta', for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare's character Falstaff. "[U]n frontespizo particolare ad ogni comedia [...] ha al fine una Lettera dell'Aretino a Daniele Barbaro" (Gamba). - One gathering misbound, but a nice complete copy. - Edit 16, CNCE 2486. PAPPUS, of Alexandria
Ed. by Federico Commandino. Numerous woodcut illus. & diagrams in the text. 4 p.l. (the last a blank), 334 (i.e., 332) pp. Folio, cont. limp vellum (title a bit soiled, last two leaves with some light dampstaining), ties gone. Pesaro: H. Concordia, 1588. First edition and a very fine and fresh copy of this uncommon book; this edition, providing the complete extant text, was the final work to be edited by Commandino and completes his life's work of reviving Renaissance mathematics by making available the best mathematical writings of antiquity. "In the silver age of Greek mathematics Pappus stands out as an accomplished and versatile geometer. His treatise known as the Synagoge or Collection is a chief, and sometimes the only, source for our knowledge of his predecessors' achievements. The Collection is in eight books, perhaps originally in twelve, of which the first and part of the second are missing... "Book VII is the most fascinating in the whole Collection, not merely by its intrinsic interest and by what it preserves of earlier writers but by its influence on modern mathematics."D.S.B., X, p. 293-95(and see pp. 294-98 for a full discussion of the contents). This concerns, in a passage on Apollonius' Conics, the attempt to conceive of the product of more than three straight lines as geometrical entities, known as "Pappus' Problem." Descartes devoted a major part of his own Géométrie to this, and solved it by the use of algebraic notation. "Pappus' problem thus inspired the new method of analytical geometry that has proved such a powerful tool in su … [Click Below for Full Description]

Belon, P.
Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cavellat, 1588. 4to (22.1 x 15.4 cm). [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517-murdered in Paris, 1564). Very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
