GRANADA (Luis de).
En Barcelona, por Francisco Trincher, 1588. in-folio. 4ff. 244pp. 2ff. "The best known of his ascetical writings, and the one that achieved the greatest measure of success, is "The Sinner's Guide" (La Guia de Pecadores). ( ) It is marked by a smooth, harmonious style of purest Spanish idiom which has merited for it the reputation of a classic, and by an unctuous eloquence that has made it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tabourot, Étienne
Chez Jean Richer, Paris, 1588. First edition. Title pages with woodcut printer's devices. Woodcut and typographical head- and tailpieces throughout. Woodcut initials. Woodcut portrait of Tabourot in Quatriesme livre (A4v). Bound in contemporary limp vellum, title inked on the spine. Five parts bound into one volume. 12°: A-K12, L4; ff. 124; A-E12, F11 [last blank]; ff. 60; 9, (3 [of which the last is blank]); A-F12, G4 [last blank]; ff. 75, (1 [bank]). The scarce first edition of the complete collection of Tabourot's witty epigrams, along with Cagasanga. Étienne Tabourot (1549-1590) was a French jurist of Dijon and a satirical writer and poet of the Renaissance. His first book was the Bigarrures to be published in 1582 which was completed in the following years by the Apophtegmes du Sieur Gaulard and the Escraignes dijonnoises, then in 1585 and 1588, he published the first three and the fourth and fifth parts of the present book, the Touches, a collection of epigrams and sayings in the style of Martial. Tabourot wrote under the pseudonym of "Seigneur des Accords" and earned the title of "the Burgundian Rabelais" by his outspoken comments on his contemporaries. We could locate only one complete copy including all five books, which is kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale, however, it lacks the Cagasanga (which forms signature F at the end of the fourth book). It is also rare on the market, besides this one, we only know about the 2003 Sotheby's copy. In their catalogue, the auction house claimed that "no complete copy has appeared at auction in the French records from 1918 to t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: Dominicum Basam, 1588. Very Nice: Red and Black title page and text with mutiple small (1 1/2" X 1") decorations throughout the text: some foxing: some paper loss and occasional tear: front board off as is front endpaper facing: ex-library. Lovely missal with Gregorian calendar, order of the Mass, devotions to Mary and other important markers of the faith. Beautiful example of early book art: smooth vellum binding over solid board, red and black printed title page with religious vignettes at top and bottom of page; heavy paper, an epistle followed by the calendar of the Church with some days marked in red, general prayers, various masses for different holy days, and hymns for other holidays. Much of the book has little decorations on each page, either a vignette of a saint or a decorative capitols. In very good condition, with age appropriate paper discoloration but very little foxing: paper loss to the endpapers :(which look to be a newer addition), bookplate of Haverhill Public Library, James E Gale Fund, library markings, especially on first several pages. There is a note in pencil on the back of the loose endpaper and some numbering on the back of the next blank from the library. Otherwise, text is clear and crisp; elegant Gothic lettering in red and black, intermittent decorative woodcuts. Very Good Condition: folio with slip case: vellum binding with heavy boards and marbled endpapers (endpapers appear newer than text) bookplate inside front cover: library markings: some small tears to edges: occasional foxing: "Missale Romanum,Ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilij Tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Braun-Hogenberg (1588), um 1700, (rote Umrandung) 38,2x53 Nebehay-Wagner 108/IV/45a. Zu Anna Beek siehe Wurzbach, Niederl. Künstler, I,68. FRONTINI,Sexto Ivlii (30-104 d.C.).-
Apud Egidium & Nicolaum Gillios,, Parisiis, 1588. 88pp.

"Xilografia, 1588, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra 'Albrecht Dürer ... / LVI Jares', Dürer's 'AD' monogram in shield at right and below in margin 'Al mio C.C.MGio ... Giulia Bartrum: ""In this copy of Schön's print, Andreani has added Dürer's monogram and his coat of arms in heraldic shields in the upper corners of the print, and signed it with an AA monogram in imitation of Dürer's own. Item #401728 FIRST EDITION of this foundational work in the histories of technology and book design. Ramelli explains in his preface that the extravagance of the book was meant as much to foil a crudely pirated publication of some of his designs (probably in the circa 1583 Timon of Ambroise Bachot, future ingénieur du roi), as to fulfill his desire to show gratitude to his patron Henri III. The work was reprinted only once, in 1620. Ramelli shows "the unlimited possibilities of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Watkins] for Gabriell Simson and William White. 1588 Hugh Broughton Concent of Scripture Elizabethan Bible Comments Satan Dragon Hugh Broughton was a 16th-century English theologian who is best remembered for his first book ‘A Consent of Scripture’. This book was quickly criticized and attacked by English institutions because Broughton himself was critical of Biblical scriptures and questioned the chronology of the Bible. Broughton was forced to defend his views and did so with lectures in St. Paul’s Cathedral. He even requested of Queen Elizabeth for her to aid in settling the disputes. A rare 16th-century edition of Broughton’s first book of English dogma and scripture interpretation. It includes discussions on the popes, influences of Satan and demons, the scattering of people throughout the world, biblical wars, and even a description of “Satan the Dragon”. CHRYSOSTOME, John Saint
Duvallius Parisiis Societas Parisiensis, 1588. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Happiness can only be achieved by looking inward & learning to enjoy whatever life has and this requires transforming greed into gratitude." ― John Chrysostom A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving. "Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz) His homilies were by far his most famous works - hundreds written in total - and covered a wide variety of topics including Roman rulers, the Bible, and even homosexuality. This enormous, folio volume from the 1588 complete works of Chrysostom includes his Biblical homilies - · On Epistle of Romans o Notable for including Chrysostom's famous homily against homosexuality - describing homosexuality as the worst of all sins, worse than murder. · On Corinthians · On Galatians · On Ephesians · On Philippians · On Colossians · On Thessalonians · On Timothy · On Titus · On Philemon · On Hebrews.
