Belon, P.
- Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cavellat, 1588. 4to (22.1 x 15.4 cm). [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red.= The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517 - murdered in Paris, 1564). Belon travelled through these regions between 1546 and 1550 and made numerous observations on the plants and their use, on animals (including a great deal on herpetology), people (with their various costumes) and towns. The work includes a map/view of Alexandria, and of the Sea of Marmara. The two fold-outs are missing, as usual. Belon's reports are generally correct and not rooted in fantasy and hearsay as is often the case with his contemporaries, the sole exception being the illustration of a small dragon-like creature. Other woodcuts show trees, birds, mammals, snakes, a crocodile, a giraffe, a lobster, etc. Two illustrations cut short in the margin with minor loss. A fine copy in an attractive binding. Brunet, 4533, p. 762; Nissen ZBI, 304. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Sixtus V, Pope (1521-1590)].
1588. Large 4to (274 x 210 mm). 6 pp. on 4 leaves (final leaf blank), sewn. Latin chancery manuscript, ink on paper. Variously revised draft for a Papal decree, asking the cardinals and others to raise monies for the Church to fight the Turks as well as other heretics: "Sixtus V, in order to better govern the Church and safely protect it from all dangers, judges that the Church needs a larger amount of money. The first year the pontificate had 100,000 gold coins, as did the second, to make 1,000,000 gold coins to be guarded in the safe of the Castel Sant'Angelo. In order that they be safely guarded, two constitutions have been issued and an enormous fleet is to be prepared, as the Tyrant of the Turks as well as heretics and schismatics are a threat to the bark of Saint Peter, and large numbers of people are eager in both France and Germany to defend against the enemy. Sixtus V orders his dear brothers, the Cardinals of the Catholic Church, to bring the Holy See another 1,000,000 golden coins, and advises them how to collect the money and the divisions to be made among them for doing so, how often to pay, etc. [...]". As comparison with the final version shows, the present text underwent further editing, and not all changes here drafted made it into the final text. - Occasional slight browning and ink-bleeding, but very well preserved altogether. Aretino, Pietro.
1588. Small 8vo. 4 parts in one volume. VIII, 285, (3) ff. With medallion portrait (legend: "D. Petrus Aretinus Flagellum Principum") on title (repeated three times). 19th c. calf (slightly worn). Pirated edition of Aretino's "comedie" (the first appeared 1553 in Venice) printed by one of the most rebellious and outspoken of all the Elizabethan printers. Wolfe's production was in all probability chiefly destined for the European continent, as all of Aretino's works had been on the Roman Index since 1558; copies were offered for sale at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1589. Aretino's comedies are considered the best of his works. They rank among the great works of Renaissance drama, and many of their leading characters were prototypes for later playwrights. 'La Talanta', for example, prepared the way for Shakespeare's character Falstaff. - One gathering misbound, but a nice complete copy. Edit 16, CNCE 2486. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Georg BRAUN & Franz HOGENBERG
A good example, with fine original colour, of the Braun & Hogenberg Plan of Rome, first published in the 1588 edition of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. Braun & Hogenberg's view is based upon the work of Pirro Ligorio. However, the title banner and lower key embellishments are completely revised, the former lacking the strapwork used by Braun & Hogenberg and replaced with a tapestry style fringe, while the lower key is now embellished with images of two nobles. Rome is shown from the west in a bird's - eye view that was a major achievement in its day. It includes the most important buildings from antiquity, several aqueducts, the Aurelian Wall and large arterial streets. The three figures in Roman garb in the foreground underscore the aim of meticulous reconstruction. Mont Testaccio is shown on the far side of the Tiber in the lower right - hand edge of the pictur … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Paris. (4) ff., 496 ff., first leaf is an etched title, woodcut headpieces and initials. Bound in nineteenth-century red morocco, spine gold stamped in six compartments, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, ribbon bookmark, all edges gilt. Minor rubbing and edge wear to spine and boards, book labels inside upper cover and on front flyleaf, title engraving trimmed at or just inside platemark as is usual, faint inscription of verso of f. (4), some edge wear to f. 2, small loss at corner of f. 247 (SSS iii), a few minor paper flaws, very occasional minor staining, very minor browning to a few quires. The first complete edition of Michel de Montaigne's (1533-92) Essais, one of the most influential and profound works of world literature. This is the last edition printed during the author's lifetime and the definitive text on which all later editions are based. The volume, the so-called 'cinquièsme edition', is in fact the fourth edition, and contains the first appearance of the third book, printed from Montaigne's manuscript copy. (Sayce offers an interesting hypothesis for the odd numbering of this edition: "The substitution of fifth for fourth edition may have been prompted by the desire to suggest that the book was selling better than it was, a trick unknown today.") Montaigne's association with Abel L'Angelier, among the great printer-editors of the time, was as much a coup for the author as it was for the publisher, and the present volume's format, "larger than the normal L'Angelier quarto, gives Montaigne's book a certain prestige" (Desan, p. 42).
