Cologne, Braun & Hogenberg, 1588. This great plan of the city shows every individual building, the circling moat with numerous bridges, and more. The entire city is surrounded by the fortified wall with many turrets and towers. Strong fortifications were employed to protect Brussels, still the city relied heavily on trade as evidenced by the waterways passing through the walls to permit commerce. Numerous ships are shown entering the city and moored within it. At left is a list of more than fifty important buildings that is keyed to the plan. At lower right the architectural themed cartouche encloses the Latin title. The coat-of-arms for Belgium and the city are displayed at the upper corners. Braun & Hogenberg
Cologne,Braun & Hogenberg, 1588. TRANSLATION OF CARTOUCHE TEXT: Antwerp is a well-built and noted trade city in Brabant, which attracts many Germans, French, Italians, Spaniards, English and other nations. In this city there are beautiful, huge churches and houses, including in particular the church of Our Lady with a tall stone tower and the splendid, beautiful town hall. The venerable Hansa, the English and the Portuguese also own public buildings in which the merchants have their residences. In the church of St Michael is a magnificent monument and tomb for Isabella's husband, Charles, Duke of Burgundy. On 5 November 1567 the massive city wall was built with imposing blockhouses and bulwarks and surrounded by a large moat. Inside, comfortable houses inhabited by the occupying troops surround a broad square. In the middle stands a statue of the famous Duke of Alba made of gilt metal, cast at great expense on the orders of the King of Spain. Erected in memory of Ferdinand Alvarez of Toledo, Duke of Alba, Philip II of Spain's commander-in-chief in the Spanish Netherlands, as the King's most faithful servant, because after quelling the uprising and crushing the insurgents he upheld the faith, law and peace of the province. Latin on verso, 530x 400 cm, Lovely map in good condition.

Braun & Hogenberg
Braun & Hogenberg, 1588. Olisipo . vulgo Lisbona Florentissimum Portugalliae Emporiv. [on sheet with] Cascale Lusitaniae from Braun & Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, edition 1588. Latin text on verso,550 x 420 mm, some browning and foxing, mainly on the margins. Lisbon's appearance in second place in the Civitates is certainly no accident, since by the start of the 16th century Lisbon already numbered 350,000 inhabitants and thus ranked amongst the largest of all the most famous cities. The densely packed houses in the engraving underline this fact. Emphasis is also placed upon the harbour and shipyards, highlighting Lisbon's importance as a cosmopolitan centre of trade. Lisbon was the Portuguese city that profited the most from the expansion of the Portuguese global empire, which began in 1499 after Vasco da Gama's voyages of discovery and led to the colonies in Asia and South America. Pope Alexander VI also underlined Portugal's importance with the coronation of Manuel I as "Lord of the conquest, navigation and commerce of India, Ethiopia, Arabia and Persia." Cascais and Belém are two small towns in the vicinity of Lisbon. They are seen in a low, bird's-eye perspective from the sea. The fishing village of Cascais, today a tourist destination and a popular beach resort, lies on a bay on the Atlantic coast some 25 km west of Lisbon. Belém was incorporated into Lisbon in 1885 and lies to the west of the city centre. The church of Santa Maria mentioned by Braun served the former Hieronymite monastery (c. 1502-1572). (Taschen)

Hugh Broughton
London: 1588. A CONCENT OF SCRIPTURE Broughton, Hugh, 1549-1612., Hondius, Jodocus, 1563-1612, ill. Imprinted at London [By Richard Watkins] for Gabriell Simson and William White, [c1588-90]. ---o0o--- A rare 16th-century edition of Hugh Broughton s first book of English dogma and scripture interpretation, containing a rare HAND COLORED and GOLD applique to the title page and present plates, as shown. It includes discussions on the popes, influences of Satan and demons, the scattering of people throughout the world, biblical wars, and even a description of Satan the Dragon, some depicted in the present plates, as shown. This was Broughton's first work and was first published in 1588. Dedicated to queen Elizabeth, the work is a scripture chronology and genealogy, designed to show the chronological order of events from Adam to Christ, and harmonize the disagreeing passages. John Speed superintended the press. The work is interesting, written in a lively style, full of learning and ingenuity, but removing all difficulties with a quaint oracular dogmatism, which entertains rather than convinces. He holds the absolute incorruptness of the text of both testaments, including the Hebrew points. It was attacked at both universities, and the author was obliged to defend it in a series of lectures. He even requested of Queen Elizabeth for her to aid in settling the disputes. "The complexities of dealing with Broughton's works--even when limited, as here, to those in English--are considerable. Many items are undated, most give no place of printing, and not a few are pamphlets of no mor … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHRYSOSTOME, John Saint
Duvallius Parisiis Societas Parisiensis, 1588. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Happiness can only be achieved by looking inward & learning to enjoy whatever life has and this requires transforming greed into gratitude." ― John Chrysostom A rare 16th-century printing of works of John Chrysostom. Chrysostom was one of the most important Early Christian Church authors and preachers and is most remembered for his sermons and homilies. He preached on many different subjects, but his most frequented topic was helping the needy. Chrysostom calls for followers of Jesus to set aside their material desires to help the poor, often in a way that shamed the rich and guilted them in to giving. "Do you pay such honor to your excrements as to receive them into a silver chamber-pot when another man made in the image of God is perishing in the cold?" (Chrysostom in Liebeschuetz) His homilies were by far his most famous works - hundreds written in total - and covered a wide variety of topics including Roman rulers, the Bible, and even the homosexuality. This enormous, folio volume from the 1588 complete works of Chrysostom includes a number of "life of Chrysostom's" by Symeon the Metaphrast and Cassiodorus. Other works include his homilies and sermons - · On Adam and Eve · On Abraham and Isaac · On Jacob, Esau, Joseph · On David and Saul · On David and Goliath · On the Psalms of David · On Jonah · On Saint Susanna.

PLINY the Younger
Joannem Richerium, via D. Joannis Lateranensis, sub Arbore virescente. 1588 1st ed Pliny the Younger Epistles Panegyricus Vesuvius ROME Early Church Pliny the Younger, one of the most notable 1st-century historians, is best remembered for his written works and orations. His best-known, and still widely popular work is his ‘Epistles’, which was a series of personal letters to other Roman figures. They give an important view of Roman everyday life as well as an interesting perspective on Pliny’s views against Christianity. However, the most important epistles concern Pliny’s account of the Mount Vesuvius eruption. Tacitus, a friend of Pliny, wanted to know more about the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, and the eruption itself. This 1588 first edition was published by Jean Richer and includes a dedicatory epistle from Claude Mignault Item number: #9875 Price: $599 PLINY the Younger Cai Plinii Secundi Novocomensis, Epistolarum libri decem. (18,5 x 13,2 inch). From vol 3 of a latin ed. of 'Civitates orbis Terrarum: Urbium praecipuarum totius mundi Liber tertius (.).', by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, Cologne, 1588. From the famous six volume town book : 'Civitatis Orbis Terrarum.', published in Cologne, 1572-1617 by Georg Braun. The first volume of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum was published in Cologne in 1572. The sixth and the final volume appeared in 1617. This great city atlas, edited by Georg Braun and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg (he created the first four volumes of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The fifth and sixth volume was created by Simon van den Neuwel (Novellanus), eventually contained 546 prospects, bird-eye views and map views of cities from all over the world. Braun was greatly assisted in his project by the close, and continued interest of Abraham Ortelius, whose Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570 was, as a systematic and comprehensive collection of maps of uniform style, the first true atlas. The Civitates, indeed, was intended as a companion for the Theatrum, but appeared even more succesfull. Over a hundred of different artists and cartographers, the most significant of whom was Antwerp artist Georg (Joris) Hoefnagel (1542-1600), engraved the copper-plates from drawings. He not only contributed most of the original material for the Spanish and Italian towns but also reworked and modified tho … [Click Below for Full Description]
