LIVY, Titus
Frankfurt: Fancofurti ad Moenum, 1588. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Men of outstanding ability are more likely to lack the power of controlling their own people than of defeating an enemy in battle." ― Livy, The History of Rome Few works on the history of Rome are as important and impactful as Livy's 'Ab Urbe Condita.' Livy began working on this work at the end of the 1st-century BC and covers the earliest times and the foundation of Rome through the reign of Caesar Augustus. This extremely rare 16th-century printing of Livy was published in Frankfurt, Germany in 1588 and features the notes and edits of Sigmund Feyerabend - a noted German bookseller and publisher - and commentary of Wilhelm Godelevaeus, who was known only for his studies of Livy.

In October he proceeded to the Holy Land, returning overland to Asia Minor and spent the winter with the Turks. In spring he went to Bursa and back to Constantinople. Item #401728 FIRST EDITION of this foundational work in the histories of technology and book design. Ramelli explains in his preface that the extravagance of the book was meant as much to foil a crudely pirated publication of some of his designs (probably in the circa 1583 Timon of Ambroise Bachot, future ingénieur du roi), as to fulfill his desire to show gratitude to his patron Henri III. The work was reprinted only once, in 1620. Ramelli shows "the unlimited possibilities of machines. For example, the dozens of water-powered pumps and mills shown in his treatise clearly demonstrated that non-muscular power could be substituted for horse- or human-power in any mechanical task requiring continuous or repetitive application of force, and the portrayal of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Artist: Janssonius Johann ( - 1664 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1664, 1588. technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Upper and lower centerfold perfectly restored; - size (in cm): 38 x 49 cm; - description: Decorative map of Prussia with three decorative cartouches and an offshore ship.Prussia: The name Prussia derives from the Old Prussians; in the 13th century, the Teutonic Knights?an organized Catholic medieval military order of German crusaders?conquered the lands inhabited by them It was a historically prominent German state that originated in 1525 with a duchy centred on the region of Prussia on the southeast coast of the Baltic Sea. It was de facto dissolved by an emergency decree transferring powers of the Prussian government to German Chancellor Franz von Papen in 1932 and de jure by an Allied decree in 1947. For centuries, the House of Hohenzollern ruled Prussia, successfully expanding its size by way of an unusually well-organised and effective army. Prussia, with its capital in Königsberg and from 1701 in Berlin, decisively shaped the history of Germany. The Thirteen Years' War (1454?1466) began when the Prussian Confederation, a coalition of Hanseatic cities of western Prussia, rebelled against the Order and requested help from the Polish king, Casimir IV Jagiellon. The Teutonic Knights were forced to acknowledge the sovereignty of, and to pay tribute to Casimir IV in the Second Peace of Thorn (1466), losing western Prussia (Royal Prussia) to Poland in the process. In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Königsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with English County Maps, a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name Atlas Major, there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. GALLUCCI, GIOVANNI PAOLO
Venetiis [Venice]: apud Ioannem Baptistam Somascum, 1588. FIRST EDITION, First Issue (with Xx2 and Ooo2 missigned Xx3 and Ooo, respectively). This is the original printing of the work considered the first modern celestial atlas to use Copernican coordinates for the location of the stars. Noted for its visual appeal, the atlas features 96 full-page wood engravings of circular diagrams and dials, 50 of these with working volvelles. In addition to astrological charts, the diagrams include the hemisphere of the New World, calculators for tides, and a representation of Limbo, Purgatory, and the Nine Circles of Hell as described by Dante. Book V contains 48 wood engravings of the Ptolemaic constellations, complete with drawings of the mythological figures represented by the stars. Thorndike notes that in his dedication to Pope Sixtus V, who had issued a bull condemning astrology, Gallucci urges the pope to endow an astronomical observatory. Gallucci argued for the legitimate use of astrology in medicine, while warning physicians not to be overly reliant on it. "Theatrum Mundi" found an appreciative audience, and was reprinted in 1589 and 1603, with a Spanish translation appearing in 1606 and going to three editions. Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621) worked as a private tutor for the scions of noble families in Venice, and was a founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. He was also the author of works on astronomical instruments, and was among the first to describe the proportional compass. Venezia,1588. In 8°, ( cm. 18,5 x cm. 25,5 ),pagine 656.

This magnificent map of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in Britian is based on Blaeu's map of 1645 which is already based on the map by John Speed from 1611. The map by Jansson can be distinguished from Blaeu's map by the additional compass roses, rhumb lines and sailing ships.
