ARISTOTLE
A VERY RARE EDITION OF ARISTOTLE'S ETHICS IN LATIN. ARISTOTELES. Ethicorum ad Nicomachum libri decem Lyon, Apud Bartholomaeum Vincentium, 1588. £1500 8vo, (xiv) 919 (i). Roman and Italic letter. Woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, and diagrams. German bookseller Label Occasional blue, green and red pencils underlining, page edges infrequently lightly dampstained. In early vellum over boards, a.e.b. A lovely copy. This Latin translation of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics resulted from the collaboration of the Byzantine scholar Johannes Argyropoulos (1415-87), who emigrated in Italy after the fall of Constantinople by cause of the Ottoman invasion in 1453, and his pupil, the Florentine man of letters Donato Acciaioli (1429-78). They emended the original Greek text and translated it into Latin, providing it with a commentary. The book includes an opening letter from the philologist Antonio Francini da Monte Varchi to the Count Raimondo della Torre from Verona, celebrating the della Torre family for their generous patronage of the humanistic studies and praising the passion of his age for the translation of Greek classics into Latin. Franchini mentions … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lauther, Christoph, Jesuit priest (b. 1561).
4to (165 x 197 mm). Latin manuscript on paper in an elegant scribal hand, titles in red; written space ruled at right and left in red and blue ink. (2), 138 pp., final blank leaf. 19th-century half morocco. The only known source for this 16th-century Biblical comedy written by Father Christoph Laut(h)er of the Jesuit College of Lucerne; According to the contemporary annotations on the title page, the play - a dramatic poem in five acts which takes as its subject the Old Testament story of Joseph - was first performed at Michaelmas, 1588 in Lucerne's fish market before the papal nuncio and other notables; the character of the Pharaoh scattered coins - both real and fake, the latter made of lead - amongst the crowd. Indeed, one of the final acts is entitled "Distributio proemiorum: Rex Pharao nummos distribuet, Regina sexta ex floribus". Here, Pharaoh first makes a little speech in verse; then the prizes are distributed to each class of the Jesuit school, the king and the queen each pronouncing a distich. - Jesuit drama was practised in the colleges of the Society of Jesus between the 16th and 18th centuries as a way of instructing both students and audience in correct language use and oratory skills, assimilating Christian values, and imparting Catholic doctrine. The increasingly elaborately produced plays were therefore based on accounts from the Bible or saintly legends, often including musical elements and sometimes even ballet. The author of this play, Christoph Lauther, joined the Jesuits in 1579: after studying rhetoric and philosophy at Ingolstadt, he is recorded at t … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1612 he married Elisabeth de Hondt, the daughter of Jodocus Hondius. He produced his first maps in 1616 of France and Italy. In 1623 Janssonius owned a bookstore in Frankfurt am Main, later also in Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, K?nigsberg, Geneva and Lyon. In the 1630s he formed a partnership with his brother in law Henricus Hondius, and together they published atlases as Mercator/Hondius/Janssonius.Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus, it had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with "English County Maps", a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered different regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name "Atlas Major", there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. It included a description of "most of the cities of the world" (Townatlas), of the waterworld (Atlas Maritimus in 33 maps), and of the Ancient World (60 maps). Castiglione, Baldassarre
London: John Wolfe, 1588. First Polygot Edition. With English, Italian and French text in parallel columns. Finely bound to style in full calf, stamped in gilt and blind, raised bands, plain end papers. First two leaves sized and remargined, small corner torn from A1, minor soiling and some faint dampstaining to leaves. Several leaves with light pencil markings to the margins. Contemporary owner's signature on the title page (Thomas Hutton 1565/6 - 1639). Despite the flaws an excellent copy overall. Ex Rosenbach collection, with card laid in. "On a chilly evening in early March 1507, high in the Appenine Mountains of northern Italy, a group of cultivated gentlemen and ladies sit around the fire in the audience chamber of the Duchess of Urbino discussing the qualities of the perfect courtier. Such is the setting of one of the most celebrated books of the Italian Renaissance...an international best-seller for a century after its first publication in 1528" (Albury). The Book of the Courtier is an allegory about the ethical responsibility of courtiers to guide and positively influence their prince, placing social responsibility upon the court for its leader's actions. Rulers and their courtiers must be educated in order to properly perform their functions; without judiciousness and wisdom, the system breaks down. Upon its translation to English, The Book of the Courtier became an important source for Shakespeare, who referenced Castiglione in multiple plays including the Henriad, tragedies such as Hamlet, and comedies such as Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It. PAPPUS (PAPPOS) of ALEXANDRIA. - [THE CULMINATION OF GREEK MATHEMATICS]
Colophon: Pisauri (Pesaro), Hieronymum Concordiam, 1588. (Having the reprinted title-page: Venetiis, Franciscum de Franciscis Senemsem, 1589). Folio. Cont. limp vellum. Repairs to upper part of back and small nicks to back repaired. Edges of covers with tiny loss of vellum. Covers slightly soiled. Calligraphed title on back. Title-page with and old, partly erased stamp. Woodcut printer's device on title. Ff (3), 334 (332) (= 664 pp). Numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text. Printed on good paper, Ff 2-3 with an old repair to inner margin (no loss). F 2 browned, but otherwise remarkably clean with only a few brownspots. A few small worm-tracts to some margins. ¶ First edition of a work which constitutes the culmination of Greek Mathematics. This copy has the fresh title, but is the 1588-printing. - "Pappos was the greatest mathematician of the final period of ancient science, and no one emulated him in Byzantine times. He was the last mathematical giant of antiquity." (George Sarton, Ancient Science and Modern Civilization. p.82)."Pappus of Alexandria in ab. 320 composed a work with the title Collection (Synagoge) which is important for several reasons. In the first place it provides a most valuable historical record of parts of Greek Mathematics that otherwise would be unknown to us. For instance it is in Book V of the Collection that we learn of Archimedes' discovery of the thirteen semiregular polyhedra or "Archimedian solids". Then, too, the Collection includes alternative proofs and supplementary lemmas for propositions in Euclid, Archimedes, Appolonius … [Click Below for Full Description]

Such is the setting of one of the most celebrated books of the Italian Renaissance…an international best-seller for a century after its first publication in 1528" (Albury). Upon its translation to English, The Book of the Courtier became an important source for Shakespeare, who referenced Castiglione in multiple plays including the Henriad, tragedies such as Hamlet, and comedies such as Much Ado About Nothing and As You Li … [Click Below for Full Description]
