De natura hominis. Add: De victu; De tuenda valetudine; Medicinae lex; Iusiurandum; Demonstratio quod artes sunt; Invectiva in obtrectatores medicinae

Rare incunable edition of this collection of Hippocratic texts, some in their first printings, and including one of the first appearances in print of the Hippocratic oath. The corpus of texts ascribed to Hippocrates of Cos , however disputed their authorship may now be, contributed unequivocally to the creation of the first system of empirical medicine based on clinical experience. De natura hominis notably introduces physiopathology in medicine and contains the first formulation of the humoral theory of disease [f. 7v], as devised either by Hippocrates or his son-in-law Polybus, which would underpin medical practice right through to the seventeenth century. This volume, edited by Andrea Brenta, comprises six additional texts, including the dietetic work, De victu, and the famed oath Iusiurandum, the appearance of which in incunable compendia such as this ?secured for it a central place in the European medical consciousness? (Norman, p. 9).One of the most famous documents in the history of medicine, ethics, and education, the Hippocratic oath has long been regarded as expressing the fundamental ethical and moral standards of the medical profession. Although Hippocrates is no longer considered the direct author of the oath, It was probably formulated in the fourth century B.C. and expresses many Hippocratic ideals. First mentioned in the first century A.D. (see Norman, 100 Books, p. 8), it became common practice, by the 1850s, for American medical students to take this oath of conduct at the completion of their studies. The text of the oath (found here on the recto of the penultimate leaf) has remained substantially unchanged since its first printing. (The familiar phrase ?First, do no harm??primum non nocere?is not included in the Hippocratic Oath, deriving instead from Hippocrates? Epidemics. The first English translation appeared in Francisco Arceo?s 1588 Most Excellent and Compendious Method of Curing Wounds in the Head.) Just as the original date and authorship of the oath is obscure, so is its publishing history. The first printing of the Iusiurandum is currently believed to be in Nicolaus Perottus?s De generibus metrorum (Verona, Boninus de Boninis, c. 1475-1483) [Goff P-298; see 2001 Countway Library exhibit of incunables]. A second contender for editio princeps is Petrus Paulus Vergerius?s translation in the second edition of the Articella Hippocratis, published by Hermannus Liechtenstein in Venice on March 29, 1483. (A briefer edition of this popular compilation of Greek and Arabic medical texts in Latin, which did not include the oath, had first appeared in Padua, 1476). Four additional incunable editions of the Articella followed by 1500, but as the second was not until August 20, 1487, it is possible that at least one edition of De natura hominis, containing the oath, intervened. The first three incunable editions of De natura hominis and associated texts, edited by Andrea Brenta, are undated. The present edition [Klebs 519.1] has been unanimously attributed to Eucharius Silber, and ascribed a date between 1483 and 1490. Another undated Roman edition [Klebs 519.3] has been assigned by Goff and IGI to Stephan Plannck, and dated c. 1490; however, CIBN assigns that work to Georgius Herolt and gives it a date of c. 1481, which would make it the editio princeps. A third Brentius edition [Klebs 519.2] was originally also attributed by Reichling to Silber; however, IGI now assigns it to Plannck between 1492-93. Until further typographic analysis has been completed, we follow Goff, Klebs and Hain-Copinger in ascribing priority to this Silber edition, which would place only the Perottus and possibly the March 1483 Articella versions of the Iusiurandum prior to this appearance. ISTC lists the following copies of this edition in North America: College of Physicians of Philadelphia, NLM (2), and NYAM.

        Albrecht Durer

Xilografia, 1588, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra. Woodcut, 1588, signed and dated on block on lower right. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with small margins beyond the border line, small repair on left margin, in general in very good condition. Andrea Andreani was the only artist to realize a significant amount of chiaroscuros during the second half of the XVI century in Italy; he also reissued many chiaroscuros realized in the past. He cut at least 35 blocks, both in colour and black&white, with a very sophisticated carving style, characterized by thin and coloured borders. He worked in Florence in 1584-5, and in Siena between 1586 and 1589, to go back to his native town, Mantua, in 1590, where he opened his workshop. This work is the portrait of the Nuremberg master, realized when he was working in Siena. Very likely, the block has been carved by some German artist, then Andreani adjusted and printed it, adding his dedication to the painter Pietro Tranquilli. Bartsch didn?t know this work, neither did the main bibliographers. 260 300

Strassburg, Bernard Jobin, 1588. Folio (315 x 215mm). pp. (16), 773, (1), (38). Title with woodcut border printed in black and red and about 30 woodcuts in the text. Contemporary blind ruled and stamped pigskin. The enlargement from the original seven to fifteen books. The publisher Bernard Jobin had first published the enlargement in 1587. The first German edition of this famous work on agriculture, gardening and cattle raising was also published by Jobin, in 1579. It was first published as 'Praedium rusticum' 1554 by Carolus Stephanus (French Charles Estienne). An amazingly popular French version 'L'agriculture et maison rustique' was first published in Paris 1564, translated by his son-in-law, Jean Liébault, it became a Renaissance bestseller with at least 80 editions by the fall of Napoleon. The work was translated into the English, German, Dutch, Italian and Scandinavian languages. It is a veritable encyclopedia of country living, with large sections on orchards and fruit. Charles Estienne belonged to the famous dynasty of Parisian printers, he was however a poor businessman and died imprisoned in 1561 at the Châtelet. "Dieser Übersetzung lag eine der Ausgaben von Charles Estienne et Jean Liébault, 'L'Agriculture et maison rustique' zugrunde, die bereits Jean de Clamorgans 'La chasse du loup' als Anhang hatte und zwischen 1567 und 1578 erschienen ist" (Lindner 563.01). The fine woodcuts are after Tobias Stimmer, J. Amman a.o. probably cut by the printer Bernard Jobin himself. First few leaves with some minor worming at the lower margin. Provenance: Bookplate of Bibliotheca Tiliana and library stamp of Biblioteka Julinska on second leaf. Lindner 563.04; VD 16E 4002.

Delphum urbs Hollandiæ cultissima, ab eiusdem nominis fossa, vulgo, Delfft appellata

Cologne: 1588. Engraved with period color. Loss to lower left corner of image very skilfully repaired with facsimile. Latin text. 13 7/8 x 18 7/8 inches. 19 x 23 inches. From Braun & Hogenberg's monumental "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" This is one of the earliest obtainable and most desirable images of Delft. An elegant composition, carefully coloured with great skill by a period hand, it provides a fascinating panorama of the beautiful Netherlands town. The town is oriented so that north is to the right or more exactly, the top right corner. Due to the river and canals, which are not easily changed, the outline of the town is very much today as it was in the late 1500s. The drawing Hogenberg used is thought to be based on an anonymous panel in the Prinsenhof in Delft, probably done in the 1570s. The drawing is quite accurate, details of the two major churches while disproportionately large depict the great spires as they were, and as they remain, having had a few alterations. The large church in the center of town is Nieuwe Kerk, in which the Netherlandish Royal Family has been buried since 1574, when William the Silent became the first, assassinated at the command of Philip II of Spain. The town was founded in the Middle Ages and seems to have enjoyed intelligent city planning with its alternating canals and streets, central church and city hall, river moat, walls and gates, all of which can be studied in this splendid bird's-eye view. It comes from Braun & Hogenberg's magnificent series of town plans, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, printed in six volumes in several languages from 1572 to 1618, incorporating 546 prospects of cities on four continents. Frans Hogenberg, who had engraved many of the maps in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of 1570, conceived of the Civitates as a worthy companion to the groundbreaking first modern atlas. Printed in Cologne, its scope and polarity has never been rivaled, and its signature application of the bird's eye view perfectly married cartography with the long tradition of landscape painting of the northern renaissance. True to the signature style of the Braun & Hogenberg series, handsome figures in period costume adorn the lower corners, while the surrounding pastureland is inhabited by grazing cows. The arms of Delft are depicted in the upper left corner. R. A. Skleton, introduction Braun & Hogenberg, 1966; Koeman, B&H 3

Paris, H. de Marnef & G. Cauellat, 1588. 4to. [xiv], 468, 1l. 18th century full tree calf. Spine with five raised bands, compartments rich gilt with floral patterns. Red morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red.* The final, richly illustrated edition of this influential work on the history, geography, and natural history of the Near and Middle East by the French naturalist and explorer Pierre Belon du Mans (born 1517 - murdered in Paris, 1564). Belon travelled through these regions between 1546 and 1550 and made numerous observations on the plants and their use, on animals (including a great deal on herpetology), people (with their various costumes) and towns. The work includes a map/view of Alexandria, and of the Sea of Marmara. His reports are generally correct and not rooted in fantasy and hearsay as is often the case with his contemporaries, the sole exception being the illustration of a small dragon-like creature. Other woodcuts show trees, birds, mammals, snakes, a crocodile, a giraffe, a lobster, etc. Two illustrations cut short in the margin with minor loss. Some light, mostly marginal spotting but mostly clean. A fine copy in an attractive binding. Brunet, 4533 p. 762; Nissen ZBI, 304.

First edition of a work which constitutes the culmination of Greek Mathematics. This copy has the fresh title, but is the 1588-printing. - "Pappos was the greatest mathematician of the final period of ancient science, and no one emulated him in Byzantine times. He was the last mathematical giant of antiquity." (George Sarton, Ancient Science and Modern Civilization. p.82)."Pappus of Alexandria in ab. 320 composed a work with the title Collection (Synagoge) which is important for several reasons. In the first place it provides a most valuable historical record of parts of Greek Mathematics that otherwise would be unknown to us. For instance it is in Book V of the Collection that we learn of Archimedes' discovery of the thirteen semiregular polyhedra or "Archimedian solids". Then, too, the Collection includes alternative proofs and supplementary lemmas for propositions in Euclid, Archimedes, Appolonius and Ptolemy. Finally, the treatise includes new discoveries, and generalizations not found in any earlier work. The Collection, Pappus' most important treatise, contained eight Books, but the first Book and the first part of the second Book are now lost" (Boyer, A History of Mathematics p. 205). "Each book (8) is preceded by general reflexions which give to that group of problems its philosophical and historical setting. The prefaces are of deep interest to historians of mathematics and, therefore, it is a great pity that three of them are lost [...] Book VII is far the longest book of the Collection [...] [and here], we find in it the famous Pappo's problem: "given several straight lines in a plane, to find the locus point, such that when straight lines are drawn from it to the given lines at a given angle, the products of certain of the segments shall be in a given ratio to the product of the remaining ones". This problem is important in itself, but even so because it exercized Descartes' mind and caused him to invent the method of coordinates explained in his Geométrie (1637). Think of a seed lying asleep for more than thirteen centuries and then helping to produce that magnificent flowering, analytical geometry [...] The final Book VIII is mechanical and is largely derived from Heron of Alexandria. Following Heron, Pappos distinguished various parts of theoretical mechanics (geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and physics). The Book is considered the climax of Greek mechanics and helps us to realize the great variety of problems to which the Hellenistic mechanicians addressed themselves. If Book VIII is the climax of Greek mechanics, we may say as well that the whole collection is a treasury and to some extent the culmination of Greek mathematics. [...] The ideas collected or invented by Pappos did not stimulate Western mathematicians until very late, but when they finally did, they caused the birth of modern mathematics- analytical geometry, projective geometry, centrobaric method. That birth or rebirth from Pappos' ashes, occurred within four years (1637-40). This was modern geometry connected immediately with the ancient one as if nothing had happened between." (Georg Sarton op.cit.). - It is from Pappus we have the famous words of Archimedes: "Give me a place to stand, and I will move the earth" (Se PMM No 72). - "Without pretending to great originality, the whole work shows, on the part of the author, a thorough grasp of all the subjects treated, independent of judgement, mastery of technique; the style is terse and clear; in short, Pappus stands out as an accomplished and versatile mathematician, a worthy representative of the classical Greek geometry." (Heath, A History of Greek mathematics Vol. II: p.358). - Adams P 224 (The sheets of the Pisauris edition with a fresh title)

"A Generall Carde & discription of the Sea Coastes of Europe, and navigation in this book conteyned"

Engraved map, 53,9x37,8cm Verso one page text and description London 1588 In 1584 - 85 Waghenaer published in Dutch his book with charts "Speculum nauticum..." which was the first real sea atlas in the world followed by several editions in different languages. Towards the end of the 1580s England and Queen Elisabeth was at war with Spain, the so-called "Anglo-Spanish War 1585 - 1604". The big threat for the British was the "Spanish Armada", the impressive Spanish fleet. To be prepared for a major sea battle, Lord Chancellor, Sir Christopher Hatton commissioned through the clerk to the Privy Council, Anthony Ashley an English translation of Waghenaer's pilot book with the Latin edition from 1586 as a model (see Kunstantikvariat PAMA, March 2011 entry 71). In general the maps for the English edition were simplified from the earlier versions but this is not the case with the most important chart in the pilot guide, the general chart of Europe. The most elegant map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius and is richly decorated with coats of arms. The English sea charts by Waghenaer became so popular that the expression "Waggooners" became synonymous with charts in general.THE CHART IS A GREAT RARITY IN THE HISTORY OF MARINE CARTOGRAPHY. WE ARE NOT AWARE OF ANY INDIVIDUAL COPY SOLD ANYWHERE IN AUCTIONS OR IN DEALERS' CATALOGUES WITHIN THE LAST 15 - 20 YEARS.. On three sides several marginal restorations affecting the printed surface in places, but with minor loss of geographical information. Especially seen in the upper right corner, the area of the Adriatic, and along lower margin. Some small holes filled in. Despite the mentioned faults a very acceptable copy. A good impression.
