Giovanni Battista Guarini (1538, Ferrara -1612, Venecia) fue un poeta, dramaturgo y diplomático italiano renacentista. En 1590 escribió su trabajo más conocido, Il pastor fido. Se trata de una tragicomedia pastoril escrita entre 1580 y 1583, pero publicada en 1590, que se hizo muy popular y se tradujo a muchos otros idiomas durante el siglo XVII, estableciendo pautas de comportamiento refinado y de galantería que duraron hasta finales del siglo XVIII.

      Typographical device on title. Printed throughout in black letter. 11, [1] leaves. Small 4to, fine modern blue morocco, dentelles gilt, a.e.g. London: T. Purfoote, the assigne of R. Tottill, 1588. Fourth edition of one of the earliest English books of "secrets," or manual of practical arts; this text appears to be entirely of English origins. It was first published in 1573 and reprinted in 1581 and 1583; there were also editions of 1596 and 1605. All editions are very scarce; of this printing the NSTC (24255) records five copies: L18, O; F, PN, NY Metropolitan Museum. This is a very early English manual of instructions for painting and illuminating ("limming," or "limning"), particularly books and manuscripts. The following recipes are characteristic: "to temper golde or silver wherewith you may write with a pen or paint with a pencil"; "to temper Brasill wherewith to write, florish, or rule bookes"; "to make a kind of colouring called vernix, wherewith you may vernish gold, silver, and other colour or paintings, be it upon velim, paper, timber, stone, leade, copper, glasse, &c." The last leaf contains on the recto "the names of all such colours and other thinges as are mentioned and contayned in this present booke of limming, and are for the moste parte to bee solde at the apothecaries," and on the verso is an index to the various recipes. A fine copy. Books of this sort are perishable by nature and copies seldom appear on the market; many of those which do survive in institutional libraries are in less than perfect condition. .

Light toning on scattered leaves, but overall a bright copy, very good. First edition of an Archimedean work by Galileo¿s friend and early patron Guidobaldo del Monte. Guidobaldo¿s Liber mechanicorum (1577), regarded as the greatest work on statics since the Greeks, employed the mathematically rigorous proofs of Archimedean models in investigating static and mechanical questions; the present work develops many of those ideas in a paraphrase of Archimedes¿ ¿On the Equilibrium of Planes,¿ which applied geometry to hydrostatics and proved the law of the lever using pure geometry. These works had a profound and lasting impact on the methodology adopted by 16th C Italian scientists, most notably Galileo: ¿Guidobaldo was Galileo¿s patron and friend and was possibly the greatest single influence on the mechanics of Galileo¿ (DSB). In addition to his patronage, Guidobaldo also supported Galileo¿s bid for Chair of Mathematics at the University of Padua in 1592. Galileo himself, who was sent a copy of the present work, adopted Guidobaldo¿s analysis of the lever. Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607, born to a wealthy family from Urbino, was a soldier, military engineer, astronomer and mathematician. Haebler spekuliert, ob hiermit womöglich der Dresdner Meister Jacob Weidlich bezeichnet wird: "Um einen sächsischen Buchbinder scheint es sich nach dem Wappen in Platte IV jedenfalls zu handeln; die selten auftretende Darstellung des hl. Georg in dieser Verbindung würde aber besser zu einem Meister mit diesem Taufnamen gepaßt haben. Dazu kommt, daß Weidlich wohl ein älterer Zeitgenosse des Jakob Krause gewesen ist, während Platte IV noch auf dem Einbande eines Druckes von 1603 [und hier sogar 1613] erscheint.       Leiden, 1588. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PUBLISHED WORKS RELATING TO THE CELEBRATED TRAVELS OF THE ENGLISH NAVIGATOR SIR FRANCIS DRAKE Copper-plate engraving with original hand color: 163/4" x 217/8" References: Philip D. Burden, The Mapping of North America: A List of Printed Maps 1511-1670 (Rickmansworth, 1996), 81-83. This extremely rare and colorful plan is one of the most important published works relating to the celebrated travels of the English navigator Sir Francis Drake (1540-1596). In 1580, Drake had returned to great acclaim from his voyage around the world, the second successful circumnavigation after Magellan. One of Drake's primary goals for that journey had been to wreak havoc on Britain's rivals, Spain and Portugal. To that end, he terrorized Spanish towns on the Pacific Coast of South America while raiding Spanish and Portuguese ships for their booty (and occasionally kidnapping their pilots) before returning to England. In 1585, Queen Elizabeth I gave Drake - now a national hero - yet another mission to harass the Spanish in America. After inaugurating the voyage by burning the town of Vigo in northwestern Spain, Drake and his twenty-five vessels took Santiago in the Cape Verde Islands, and it is this attack that is depicted in this memorable view. After crossing the Atlantic, they captured Santo Domingo, Hispaniola and Cartagena, Colombia, and then descended on St. Augustine, Florida, sacking and burning the town. Proceeding to the recent English settlement of Roanoke Island, they took aboard its survivors, including the writer Thomas Harriot and the artist John White, and brought them back to Britain. This view was the first ever to be published of Santiago, which lies in the Cape Verde Islands off the west coast of Africa, and it includes depictions of animals inspired by the drawings of John White, such as a flying fish at lower right and a monkey towards the center. The artist, Baptista Boazio, was an Italian living in London who presumably obtained copies of White's drawings, as well as sketches of the towns and of Drake's attacks, from a member of the expedition. The view forms part of a series of four plans (the others being of Saint Augustine, Santo Domingo and Cartagena) that comprise the only known engraved works by Boazio, although he is well known for his manuscript maps. The plate for this map is generally thought to have been engraved in Leiden in 1588 to accompany the first edition (in Latin) of Walter Bigges's notable account of Drake's expedition, published in London the following year as A Summarie and True Discourse of Sir Francis Drakes West Indian Voyage. Bigges had been a captain on a ship in Drake's fleet, and one of the 750 men who were lost during the voyage, largely to disease. This view is one of the most significant and fascinating glimpses of Drake's landmark voyage, and as one of fewer than ten known copies, it is extremely rare.. Book.

Die Zeichnung gehört unmittelbar in den Kreis von Hans von Aachen und ist eine Kopie der gleichseitigen Zeichnung des Künstlers, die sich heute im Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, befindet (Inv. Nr. 2856). Vermutlich stammt unsere Zeichnung nicht von einem der beiden Schüler, die von Aachen schon in Venedig und dann auch in München hatte. Vielmehr wurde sie wahrscheinlich von einer späteren Hand nach der Zeichnung (wegen der zeichnerischen Anlage nicht nach einem Gemälde) von Aachens kopiert. Bei den beiden Schülern handelt es sich einmal um Pieter Isaacsz, der oben bereits erwähnt ist, und um Hans Holtzmayr (um 1565 - München - nach 1625), von dem zahlreiche Zeichnungen nach Hans von Aachen überliefert sind (vgl. z. B. Ausst. Katalog: H. Geissler: Zeichnung in Deutschland. Deutsche Zeichner 1540-1640. 2 Bde., Staatsgalerie Stuttgart 1979, Bd. I, D 18, Bd. II., S. 189 ff.). Antique 'map-view' of Bologna, published for the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas of printed town plans This map derived form an earlier copper engraving published by Claudio Duchetti in 1582. The fortified city with moats and walls is shown from he north. Depicted at the centre there are various towers belonging to the major families, att the height of constructioins, during the middle ages, there were up to 180 towers. The Palazzo Comunale is one of the largest building in Pïazza Maggiore , which was intermittently under construction from 1287. On eof the largest church, San Petronio, appears above to the right. The massive university complex is discernible in a 16th-century palazzo between two arterial street.

Octavo, [8], 410 pp., owner's seal on title-page (which is slightly dust-soiled), a few leaves a little browned, cut close by the binder (as often) affecting some headlines and catchwords, small rust-hole in T4 resulting in the loss of a few letters; nonetheless an excellent copy of this rarity, bound without final blank leaf in period style speckled calf by Aquarius, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands; calf bookform box. The first English book on China: from the library of Charles Boxer. Rare and desirable: the first book on China printed in England, and the first work in English devoted exclusively to China. This attractive copy of a remarkably important book is from the famous library of Charles Boxer, with his distinctive red seal on the title-page. Prolific writer, scholar, orientalist, intelligence officer, Camões Professor of History at King's College London, Boxer was also one of the great collectors of his time, and assembled an important library of books on China the far East, and the East Indies. This is the very rare first English translation of Juan González de Mendoza's history of the Chinese empire and beyond. Mendoza (1545-1618) was a Spanish Augustinian priest who travelled to Mexico in 1562; from here he developed a keen interest in the mission to China. Although he never joined the mission, Mendoza amassed a large volume of material gathered by Augustinian Franciscan missionaries to the Philippines and China, as well as gaining access to the impressive collection of Chinese works acquired by Martin de Rada in Fukien in 1575. Mendoza's book was translated into English by Robert Parke, at the suggestion of Richard Hakluyt, from the Madrid edition of 1586, the revised and most complete edition following a first publication in Rome in 1585. Löwendahl notes its rapid translation into seven languages and impact on the European imagination of China 'The reading public was small, and it is probably no exaggeration to say that Mendoza's book had been read by the majority of well-educated Europeans by the end at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Its influence was naturally enormous.' The first major survey of China, 33 editions have been identified of the book in the thirty years following its first publication. The English edition was by far the most significant in terms of its reach and influence. It happens to be an exceptionally rare book today. This was 'the most influential and detailed work on China prepared in the sixteenth century… Its popularity may be accounted for in part by the great and unsatisfied demand which existed everywhere in Europe for a comprehensive and authoritative survey of China in the vernacular languages… In fact, the authority of Mendoza's book was so great that it became the point of departure and the basis of comparison for all subsequent European works on China written before the eighteenth century…' (Lach). Mendoza's book was also important for its information on the East Indies and Southeast Asia. Lach identifies only three major sources for this early period: the letters of the Jesuit missionaries in the far east, narratives by commercial travellers from Europe, and 'the accounts of two Spaniards who obtained their information about the East by way of the Philippines and Mexico' (namely José de Acosta and Mendoza's account of China).

Jahrhunderts. Ein eigenes Kapitel (das 6.) ist den "Riesen oder sehr grossen Leuten zu vnsern Zeiten" gewidmet. One of the most decorative maps of Denmark, taken from Jordan's map of Denmark of 1585, which includes Schleswig and Holstein. The dedication is to Heinrich, Graf von Rantzau (1526-98), Governor of Holstein, historian and patron of Jordan and Tycho Brahe. He was a regular correspondent with both Gerard Mercator and Braun & Hogenberg: it is this link that accounts for this map being the only country map in Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed townplans. The cartouches, galleons, sea-monsters and allegorical figures make this a classic collector's map.

The large folding map of Lemnos and Athos is often missing, it is not called for in earlier editions. Pierre Belon was a French naturalist, (circa 1517 - 1574). He studied medicine in Paris, where he took the degree of doctor, and then became a pupil of the botanist Valerius Cordus (1515 - 1544) at Wittenberg University, with whom he travelled in Germany. On his return to France he was taken under the patronage of Cardinal de Tournon, who provided him with the means for undertaking an extensive scientific journey. Starting in 1546, he travelled through Greece, Asia Minor, Egypt, Arabia and Palestine, and returned in 1549. In his book he describes the flora and fauna he encounters on his journey, antiquities and towns, and also the peoples and their lives and customs. Many illustrations show unusual animals and plants, 5 are of snakes, 1 shows a small dragon, the only one not based on observation.       1588 - Cologne, 1588-, German text edition. Fine original colour. 365 x 520mm. Early 'map-view' of Perugia, published in the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed townplans. Seen from the south in a bird's-eye view, the city sprawls across several hills and in places is protected by city walls and gates that make it look like a fortress. Some of its most important churches are on the periphery: on the northern edge of the city are Sant'Angelo at the centre and, near the southern boundary, San Pietro with a flat roof. Slightly above it in the picture is San Domenico. The complex comprising San Francesco and San Bernardino is on the western edge of the city. At the centre is the cathedral of San Lorenzo, a Gothic hall church. In front of the cathedral tower stands the celebrated Fontana Maggiore. An early ingenous settlement, Perugia flourished in the Middle Ages. It belonged to the Papal States from 1520 to 1680. Today the city with its university founded in 1276 is the capital of the province of Umbria

LipsÕ first edition was published in 1575; it was revised and corrected five times up until 1606 and was reprinted numerous times after that.. Boards rubbed; hinges cracked, but cords holding; a good, sound copy.. Cf. Voet, The Plantin Press, 2280, for a similar imprint. Small 8vo, 18th century Cambridge style calf. ¦ From the library of English playwright William Congreve, with his signature "Wm. Congreve" on the recto of the first blank. The history of Congreve's library is fairly well documented in the Library of William Congreve by John Hodges (NYPL, 1955): upon his death in 1729, Congreve left his library to Henrietta, the Duchess of Marlborough, who passed it on to her daughter, Mary (gossip had it that she was also Congreve's daughter), who married the Duke of Leeds, and in 1740 the books were merged into the Leeds family library at Hornby Castle, where they remained until the Leeds properties were sold in 1930, and Sotheby's auctioned off the books. Of the 713 lots, only ten books were identified as containing Congreve's signature, and when Hodges completed his work in 1955 only ten additional books with Congreve's signature had been found. Hodges' list of 659 books from Congreve's library is based on an 18th century manuscript "Bibliotheca Gul. Congreve, Armigeri" found among the Leeds family papers. This copy of Tacitus' works is not on that list, but that list is clearly only a small representation of the whole. The fact that there are so few extant examples of books with Congreve's ownership signature "suggests that he usually failed to write his name in his books" (Hodges). It also suggests that the other books from his library scattered to the wind by the Sotheby's auction are nearly impossible to identify without Congreve's signature as evidence of provenance, thus making evidence of that provenance - as here - rare. The signature in this copy is very clearly that of William Congreve, the playwright, and not that of the other known William Congreves of the period. ¦ Early ink underlining in the text; one earlier marginal note (trimmed, hence prior to the binding) on page 630.
