Seravallum celeberrimum Marchiae Tarvisinae in Agro Forojuliensi opp. (idum).

Questi volumi vennero pubblicati originariamente in latino, e poi ristampati in tedesco e in francese.

Walonis Messalini De episcopis et presbyteris contra D[ionysium] Petavium Loiolitam dissertatio prima.

"Walo Messalinus" is a pseudonym for Claude Saumaise (or Salmasius, 1588-1653), a Huguenot classicist and theologian probably best noted for his attacks on the papacy. In this treatise he argues against the Jesuit patrologist Denis Petau that bishops and presbyters were the same in the early church, and thus that presbyterian polity was more primitive. The text of this => sole edition is printed in roman with a goodly amount of Greek, while the title-page is printed in black and red and ornamented with a woodcut vignette of a man digging beneath the motto "Fac et spera." => "Do and hope." Provenance: Charles Spencer, Third Earl of Sunderland, lot 8432 in the Sunderland Library sale (1882).

Some darkening to paper with waterstains of different sizes, especially in the second half of the book.- // Prov.: Handwritten ex-libris on title page from the library aux Augustins de Rennes .- // Final version (the previous versions were from 1574 and 1581) of the Antidotarium speciale by the Swiss physician Joahaness Jakob Wecker, published two years after his death at the request of his widow, Anna Weckerin, who, in turn, had earned herself a great reputation within the medical community for her food recipes to meet the needs of the sick. In fact, urged by the colleagues of her dead husband, she wrote a cookbook, 'Ein Koestlich new Kochbuch', published in 1597, the year of her death, which figured the most convenient diets for patients(1). The work of Wecker, who first studied and taught humanities (1544-1560) and then gained a doctorate in medicine at the University of Basel and who, thanks to his services during the plague of 1565, was awarded the contract as the first doctor in the city of Colmar, has been obscured by the celebrity he achieved after the persecution suffered following the publication in the 1582 of 'The seventeen books of Secrets', which became a European best-seller and was immediately condemned by the Catholic Church, including it in the Roman Index of forbidden works. This circumstance forced him to abandon the practice of medicine to return to Basel and devoted himself to the teaching of philosophy, logic and rhetoric(2). The books of secret were recipe books with solutions to everyday life s practical situations, ranging from dyes to medical remedies, going through animal feed, remedies against woodworm or ointments to prevent hair loss. A variant of these books that became quite popular were the rustic mansion books, with answers to everything needed on a farm, for the house, its inhabitants, livestock and agriculture. Rooted in the Latin De Rustica , a whole genealogy can be traced up to the Dictionaries for practical life in the city and in the country from the 19th century, or the industrial recipe books of the 20th century. But another variant is related to science, natural philosophy as it was called, and more specifically to experimentation. Its origin should be attributed to the 'Academy of the secrets' the first constituted association of experimental science. This association was created in Naples by a group of doctors and humanists, from which the most well-known is Girolamo Ruscelli (1500-1566), and its significance should be situated in the publication, under a pseudonym, either by the collective, or by Ruscelli, of 'The book of Secrets of Alessio Piemontese', printed in 1555 in Venice, by Sigismondo Bordogna. A book that began with some very promising indications for preserving youth and for delaying senescence, a subject with a great tradition, both in manuscript and printed forms. The work was a huge success, which grew and reached several hundreds of editions in all languages across Europe over the following two hundred years(3). From among its translators and disseminators, it was Wecker however, that opened a line that would later become conflicting. After the translation into Latin of the book by Ruscelli in 1559 (and therefore being the one who most contributed to its initial dissemination in Europe), during the following years he continued publishing new editions (1560, 1561, 1563, 1568 ..., and the translation into German in 1569)(4), in which, in addition to collecting Ruscelli s modifications, he added more secrets taken from other authors. Until 1582, when he changed the format and its fate. In 'The XVII Books of Secrets' he introduced a natural philosophy approach, where he began reflecting on how to know the ultimate truth, the possibilities of man in regard to knowledge and on the nature of God, to move later to go presenting the secrets (i.e., solutions) to situations and problems in spheres such as the body (of their evils, on health and remedies), terrestrial animals, fish, birds (their care and use), metals, stones and gems, houses (location, garden, clothing, fountains...), climate, sciences, mechanical arts or different human behaviours, providing thus the catalogue of the techniques used in Europe in laboratory preparations. Focusing exclusively on this aspect, in 1574 Wecker published the first version of an 'Antidotarium Speciale', a genuine pharmacopoeia of remedies and drugs divided into three books, which he expanded in 1581 and whose latest version, as we noted earlier, his wife sent to print after Wecker s death. He called this pharmacopoeia special because it included the recipes used to elaborate medicines under three main features: the matter that was involved in its elaboration-from fire to animal excreta, going through seeds or bones to which he dedicates the first book; the consistency or how to apply the medicine from waters or syrups, to poultices, pills or incenses , to which he dedicated the second book; and those designed for grooming from lotions to oils, going through types of baths or ointments , as the object of the third book. What he indeed does under this first division is a strictly Galenic classification, of the recipes, medicines and remedies depending on the qualities and grades, and a therapeutic classification, in function of the organs or the diseases to which they are intended. Thus this recipe book would be an archetype of the complexity in which the building of the remedies for health (and beauty) derived, constituted on the basis of the Hippocratic-Galenic medicine.- // Refs.: Ferguson, II, 534; Herzog, 263.- // (1) The full title is Ein Koestlich new Kochbuch: Von allerhand Speisen an Gemuesen Obs Fleisch, Gefluegel, Wildpet, Fischen und Gebanchens. Musica Transalpina. Cantus [Altus-Tenor-Quintus-Sextus-Bassus]. The Second Booke of Madrigalles, to 5. & 6. voices: translated out of sundrie Italian Authors & newly published by Nicolas Yonge. Titles within typographical border, full-page woodcut coat-of-arms of Sir Henry Lennard on verso of titles, & woodcut initials throughout. Six vols. Small 4to, bindings as above. London: Printed by Thomas Este, 1597. First editions and very rare; the Locker-Lampson (bookplate) -- E.D. Church -- W.A. White (?) -- John Whipple Frothingham (bookplate) copies. These two madrigal anthologies of Yonge (d. 1619), "are important because they popularized the form in England and laid the foundations for an indigenous madrigal school by providing continental models for Elizabethan composers to imitate... "Yonge is best remembered today as the editor of two anthologies of mostly Italian vocal music published, with English texts, as Musica transalpina in 1588 and 1597. The first volume, containing fifty-seven 'madrigals' -- the first recorded English use of the term, and applied here not only to true madrigals, but also to chansons, canzonets, and other forms--was international in scope. It none the less betrayed a certain local bias: of its eighteen composers, the most liberally represented was Alfonso Ferrabosco the elder, who had lived in England from 1562 to 1578. Yonge also included William Byrd's English setting of Ariosto's 'La verginella', the first stanza of which had appeared in Italian some months earlier in the composer's own Psalmes, Sonets & Songs. In the dedication, addressed to Lord Gilbert Talbot, Yonge suggested that the publication grew out of the need to supply suitable material for friends to sing at daily music meetings in his home. As the repertory provided was mostly Italian, and those unfamiliar with the language either did not participate or did so 'with litle delight', he sought more music in the vernacular. Finding few suitable native compositions, he borrowed English versions of pieces translated by 'a Gentleman', and these and others like them proved so popular that he was eventually persuaded to publish a selection. A third of the pieces were drawn from madrigal anthologies issued in 1583 and 1585 by Pierre Phalèse of Antwerp. The success of Yonge's first collection led to its reprinting in 1593 or 1594. His 1597 volume, containing only twenty-four items by eleven composers, was less influential, though six of its lyrics were reset by later composers, a higher proportion than the nine reset from the first volume."-ODNB. Provenance note: Frothingham (1878-1935), who at the time of his marriage in 1921 lived just up the street at 375 West End Avenue, was the nephew of William Augustus White (1843-1927), the great collector of Elizabethan literature and William Blake. Following his uncle's death, Frothingham inherited a portion of White's library which he removed to France and where it remained until very recently. Fine, complete, and handsome set. We can trace no copies being sold at auction since the 1930s and only one copy in the trade (William Schab's Cat. 14 in 1950, $1200). This is not the set listed in Bartlett's 1914 and 1926 catalogues of White's library. ❧ Grove, Vol. 20, p. 574. Locker-Lampson, The Rowfant Library, II (1886), p. 134.         Lexicon Syriacum ex inductione omnium exemplorum Novi Testamenti Syriaci adornatum; adjecta singulorum vocabulorum significatione latina & germanica, cum indice triplici.

Syriac in the classical Edessene literary form is still the sacred language of several Eastern Churches and is the language of this lexicon. The dialect in ancient times was spoken in the north of Syria and in Upper Mesopotamia around Edessa. Trost (1588-1636), a professor of theology at Wittenberg, compiled this dictionary and issued it two years after publishing his much-praised edition of the Syriac New Testament with an accompanying Latin translation; the Lexicon was likewise lauded, primarily for its completeness. This and Trost's Syriac New Testament are among the earliest books printed in Cöthen, Upper Saxony. => This is the sole edition of the dictionary and it is uncommon in commerce.

Poetica.

(6), 156, ( invertiti i ff. 9-10 e 11-12). Gamba 1349: «Edizione quanto rara, altrettanto bella». BMC 470.         Trattato dello Schermo.nel quale si discorre intorno all'eccelenza dell'Armi, e delle Lettere, e intorno all'offesa, e difesa.

Et insegna uno schermo di spada sola sicuro, e singolare. Con una tavola copiosissima. In Bologna, per Giovanni Rossi, MDLXXXVIII (1588), - in-4, ff. (17), 5-84. Olschki, Choix I, 404. Gelli 186-188. Vigeant p. 130. Thimm 326. Lipperheide 2951. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[xvi], 338. *1, **7, a-s8, t6, u-z8, A-D8, E-K4-2, L6, M-Q4-2, R-X8, Y4, Z2, Aa2, Bb8, Cc-Ff4-2, Gg-Kk6-2. French text in Roman, Italian in italic. Engraved title within architectural border, full page engraved portrait of the author on verso within architectural frame, both by Léonard Gaultier, 194 engravings, of which are 174 full-page and 20 double-page, numbered to 195, numbers 148–9 combined as one illustration, three signed with the monogram "JG", text and engravings printed within borders of floral typographic ornaments, historiated and floriated woodcut initials in various sizes, woodcut tailpieces and corner ornaments. Discreet library stamp of "Schmidt József pesti molnár" on title, repeated on a few blank margins of plates. Age yellowing with marginal browning, minor spotting in places, autograph pasted over in lower blank margin of title with small repairs to outer margin on recto and verso, tear restored in blank margin of ff16, the occasional marginal thumb mark or ink spot, small oil stain in blank lower corner on last few leaves. A good copy, with excellent dark impressions of the engravings, in contemporary vellum over thick boards, old reback with original spine remounted, a little soiled, corners bumped. First edition of the most important and most impressive ‘book of machines’ of the C16th, an outstanding example of French book production; illustrated with 195 full-page engravings, it is one of the earliest and most elaborate pictorial technical works to be printed. "This volume is dedicated to the King and special care was taken to make it appropriate as an expression of gratitude for Royal favor and protection. There is also a second factor governing the circumstances of publication. In his address to the reader, Ramelli complains of piracy of his designs which resulted in their publication in corrupt and mutilated forms destroying the original accuracy of his inventions. As a result of this experience, Ramelli planned this work as a particularly handsome volume, difficult to counterfeit, strictly supervised by the author himself and published with the imprint, 'in casa del' autore'" – Mortimer. The Ramelli machines are concerned especially with hydraulics or mechanisms of warfare. The superb illustrations show the machines in use with their parts indicated by letters explained in the accompanying text. They are extremely finely worked and detailed, with great care taken to present the machine in landscape settings with figures employed in demonstrating them. Ramelli’s designs cover water-raising devices, wells, mills, mobile bridges, machines for breaking through doors and metal bars, cranes, excavating equipment, fountains, and projectile devices. He described and illustrated for the first time the rotary pump, mechanical details of windmills, and a coffer-dam of interlocking piles, and like other writers of the period he designed biological automata in the form of hydraulically operated singing birds. including one notable departure into the world of domestic gadgetry, a revolving bookcase designed to enable a reader to peruse multiple volumes without having to leave his seat. Ramelli was greatly influenced by the increasing importance placed on mathematics and geometry as an important tool for engineers and artists, and particularly by the writings of Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) and Petrus Ramus (1515-1572). Ramelli's interest in mathematics is demonstrated in the preface, ‘On the excellence of mathematics in which is shown how necessary mathematics are for learning all the liberal arts.’ "Ramelli also wanted to make his book accessible to many engineers so, as an Italian living in France, he produced both Italian and French descriptions of the machines. Ramelli's bilingual descriptions are much more detailed than those found in previous illustrated books of machines by Jacques Besson and Jean Errard de Bar-le-Duc. Ramel [Attributes: Hard Cover]
