Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)
Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598)America sive novi Orbis, nova descriptio...From Theatrum Orbis TerrarumAntwerp: 1587Hand-colored copperplate engraving18 ¼" x 22 ½" sheet size; 36" x 34" framed (framed with description)Abraham Ortel, or Ortelius (1527-1598), was born in Antwerp in 1527 and was educated in Greek, Latin and mathematics. Ortelius began his career in cartography as a map colorist, and worked as a map and book dealer. Ortelius evolved into a keen and discerning expert on contemporary geographical knowledge and its expression in cartography, even traveling through Italy and France with Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), his friend and rival. In the 1560's Ortelius conceived of the project that would win him international acclaim, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, widely considered the first modern atlas. Ortelius collected the best contemporary maps available, and had each re-engraved by the talented Flemish artist Frans Hogenberg (1535-90) into a standard format and graphic style, appended scholarly text to their versos, and published them as a uniform edition. He maintained the highest quality of paper, engraving and coloring, resulting in some of the most beautiful maps ever produced. The Theatrum proved to be a landmark advancement over previous collections of maps. Suddenly, curious Europeans truly seemed to have the world at their fingertips. From the time of its first printing until well after Ortelius' death, international demand for the Theatrum continued unabated. Between the first appearance of the Theatrum in 1570 and its final edition in 1612, it was printed in 31 edi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cholieres, Nicholas, Seigneur de
Second edition of Les Apres Disnees. 1587. París. Jean Richer. In 12vo (141 mm x 78 mm). 8 ff + 291 + 1 ff. Elegant 19th century brown crushed morocco by Pagnant, spine with five raised bands and lettered in gilt, edges gilt, inner dentelle, virtually perfect. Paper gently browned, a few margins trimmed close, else a lovely copy. Second edition ?first 1585. Cholieres (1509 ? 1592) was a literate, writer and a man of science; although little is known of his background and family, considering his education and manner of writing, it is presumable that he was a member of the provincial aristocracy. Although is not certain, it is likely that he was also Jean Dagonet [Dagoneau], author of ?La Forest Nuptiale?, amongst other popular 16th century works. Born a protestant and arguably having become a mason, he ended his life writing several religious works. His work ?Les Apres-Disnees?, deals with a wide range of subjects, including marriage, the tree of life, prognostics and astrological predictions and lunatics. Brunet, I, 1849.

Augsburg, Valentin Schönig, 1587. 4°. Mit Holzschn.-Titelvignette. 104 nn. Bll., Mod. Ppbd. - Bl. A ij mit kl. Madrid: En casa de Pedro Madrigal, 1586 [but dated 1587 on the colophon page]. Two parts bound in one volume. [12],116; 244,[12] leaves, including one full-page plate. Small octavo. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down, gilt red morocco label. Binding edgeworn and rubbed, foredge of front board gnawed. Trimmed close, affecting the first word of the title and the running headline in the preliminary material. Ex- lib., with a small ink stamp on the verso of the titlepage and on the colophon page. Faint old stain in upper margin of second part, else quite clean internally. About very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An early edition of Gonzalez de Mendoza, following the first of 1585, and the second and best edition to contain the Espejo narrative of early exploration in the American Southwest. Antonio de Espejo began his exploration of New Mexico in 1583, in the company of Fray Beltran and fourteen soldiers. The ostensible reason for his expedition was to find Fr. Agustin Rodriguez, who had disappeared in that region the previous year, but much more was accomplished than merely establishing the sad fate of the martyred Franciscan. A true wealth of new information about the traversed territory was garnered, and this is the first publication to include notice of that expedition (found in this edition beginning on leaf 165 of the second part). Most editions of this work do not contain the information about Espejo's New Mexican adventure, and Wagner says that the present edition is only the second with the Espejo narrative, following a Madrid e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mercator, Gerard (1512-1594) and Mercator, Rumold (1545-1599)
Duisburg, 1587. THE FIRST DOUBLE-HEMISPHERE WORLD MAP Engraving with original hand color: 151/2" x 201/2" References: Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World (London, 1983), n. 157. This striking map represents a re-working of Mercator's great world map of 1569 by his son and successor Rumold, who transformed it into double-hemispherical form in 1587 and incorporated it into editions of Mercator's influential atlas from 1595. The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names. Surrounding the hemispheres is a strapwork border, while between them at the top margin is an armillary sphere and at the bottom an elaborate compass rose. Gerard Mercator's prominent south-west bulge on the coastline of South America, which was soon to be corrected, is retained. This superb map represents a seminal moment in the history of cartography, for it was the primary instrument by which knowledge of Mercator's projection was diffused throughout Europe.. Book.
