Agostino CARRACCI (Bologna 1557 - Parma 1602)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
Ortelius' third and last world map is dated 1587 under the author's signature. The earlier border of clouds has been replaced by a more intricate and elegant lattice of strapwork and swag. The oval world map used previously has been updated in two major respects. South America now assumes the more correct shape anticipated in state 3 of Ortelius' second plate, and the Solomon Isles are marked for the first time. However, Ortelius shows the northern mainland's of Asia and America as separated by a narrow strait, 200 years prior to Captain Cook's thorough surveys of the area. California is properly shown as a peninsula. However, the map reflects the misconception held at the time that Tierra del Fuego was the northern tip of a massive southern continent. Indicative of its paramount importance, a copy of Ortelius' atlas is thought to have accompanied Sir Francis Drake on his circumnavigation of the world. Great copy in full original colour of this important map of the World. R. W. Shirley, "The Mapping of the world", 158; Van der Krogt 3, 0001; M. In vorliegendem Band beschreibt er 5 verschiedene Methoden der Goldherstellung und die Verwendung von Trinkgold. "His only alchemical work was this on gold. It was written so early as 1515 and in it he endeavours to prove the possibility of the transmutation of metals both speculatively and historically by actual cases, of some of which he himself was eye-witness" (Ferguson).
Extremely rare first edition in what appears to be original binding from 1587. Translated title page: "Political and Military Discourses of the Lord of La Noue. Newly Collected & Brought to Light." This is a famous military work by François de La Noue Briord (1531-1591), a Huguenot captain in the French Wars of Religion (1562-98), known for his exploits as a soldier and for his military and historical writings. He was nicknamed "Bras-de-Fer" ("Arm of Iron") because his left arm was amputated in the siege of Fontenay in 1570 and replaced by an iron device. He was also called "Bayard Huguenot," due to his bravery in the service of the Protestant cause. He was prisoner of the Spaniards in the 1580s at the castle of Limburg, during which time he wrote this famous historical work. Based on his experiences, it provides an accurate analysis of the political situation in France at the time. He advocates a policy of tolerance while demonstrating his faith in action. It also presents an in-depth study of military art and strategy. Napoleon held this work in very high esteem, even calling it the "Soldier's Bibl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rodolphus Hospinianus; Rudolf Hospinian; Rudolf Wirth
[Zurich] Tigurus: In Officina Froschoviana, 1587. Hardcover. Acceptable. [The Reformation & Anti-Catholicism: An Early Swiss Imprint] Small folio, 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. (29.2 x 19 cm). Bound in later marbled boards. [7], 136 [=130] leaves (16, 260 pp.) A defective copy, lacks title page (provided in photocopy). Later title page in manuscript, which I did not include in the collation. Last leaf mounted and the margins trimmed. (Final page number is 136, due to a printer's error in numbering. There is actually no a gap in the text between 129-136, despite appearing to be numerically.) Some water staining to text. Visch. Bibl. C 1096. The author, Rudolf Wirth, was a Swiss Reformed theologian and controversialist. As a child Hospinian watched his father imprisoned and tortured by the Church, and his uncle martyred, for heresy. In this work, Wirth attacked Catholic ceremonies as being out of harmony with the practices of the early Christian church. He writes of errors in Catholic baptism, the Eucharist, church festivals, fasting, religious orders, the rule of the papacy, and funerals. His biographer J. Heidegger writes: "Our Hospinian believed that the false dye of antiquity could be shaken off if the first origins of their errors, the incunabula themselves, as if tiny fibers placed beneath the sun and so shining through more clearly, could be distinguished from all the rest.

[Click Below for Full Description]

PATRIZI, Francesco
Vittorio Baldini, Ferrara, 1587. First edition, very rare, of Patrizi's important work on the concept of 'space', which is "one of the most significant and important documents for the history of mathematical epistemology in the Renaissance, and might indeed almost be considered the turning point and dividing line between ancient and modern geometry" (Prins, p. 56). "Patrizi's importance in the history of science rests primarily on his highly original views concerning the nature of space, which have striking similarities to those later developed by Henry More and Isaac Newton. His position was first set out in De rerum naturae libri II priores, alter de spacio physico, alter de spacio mathematico (Ferrara, 1587) [although this was probably published after the Nuova geometria - see below]. Rejecting the Aristotelian doctrines of horror vacui and of determinate 'place,' Patrizi argued that the physical existence of a void is possible and that space is a necessary precondition of all that exists in it. Space, for Patrizi, was 'merely the simple capacity (aptitudo) for receiving bodies, and nothing else.' It was no longer a category, as it was for Aristotle, but an indeterminate receptacle of infinite extent. His distinction between 'mathematical' and 'physical' space points the way toward later philosophical and scientific theories. The primacy of space (spazio) in Patrizi's system is also seen in his Della nuova geometria (Ferrara, 1587), the essence of which was later incorporated into the Nova de universis philosophia. In it Patrizi attempted to found a system of geometry in … [Click Below for Full Description]
